What Problems Does the 2002 Honda Accord Have?

The 2002 Honda Accord is generally reliable, but some frequently reported problems exist. Automatic transmission issues, particularly in the V6 models, are a concern. Symptoms include slipping gears, harsh shifting, or complete failure. Regular transmission fluid changes are crucial to mitigate this. Rust, especially in areas with road salt, is another common problem; inspect the undercarriage, wheel wells, and rocker panels. Power window regulators and door locks can fail over time. Oil consumption, especially as the engine ages, is a reported issue; regularly check and top off the oil level. There have been recalls related to airbags and ignition switch problems, so check the vehicle's VIN with Honda to ensure all recall work has been performed. Long-term reliability concerns mainly revolve around the transmission and rust prevention. While generally durable, neglecting maintenance on these vehicles can lead to expensive repairs. Some model years around this era (early 2000s) had more reported transmission issues than others, so researching specific VINs is advisable before purchasing a used model.

How long will the 2002 Honda Accord last?

A well-maintained 2002 Honda Accord can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding 250,000 miles with proper care. Years of service can range from 15 to 20+ years, depending on driving conditions and maintenance. Long-term durability is generally excellent, but weaknesses include potential rust formation and automatic transmission issues (especially in V6 models). Regular maintenance, including timely fluid changes and rust prevention measures, is crucial for maximizing longevity. The engine itself is generally robust, but ancillaries like the alternator, starter, and power steering pump may require replacement over time.
Positive Owner Reviews

2002 Honda Accord V-6 EX. Best car I have ever owned. Elderly woman drove it to the grocery store, the Doctor's office and church. It was a garage find in 2017. 15 years old at the time with 22K miles. Everything looked like new. It still smelled new.... 3k dollars and out the door. New tires and off on a road trip to Colorado from South Florida. 107K miles now. Just replaced all brake calipers, rotors and pads. New speed sensor on the trans cured "shift issues". All new tune-up, engine seals including oil pan gasket. EVERYTHING works. LOVE THIS CAR!!
Goku
Purchased a used 2002 accord V6 ex coupe from a friend (1st owner) with 138,000 kms. Only service he did since ownership was new tires, battery, oil changes. When I bought the car I replaced all 4 brake pads & rotors. Drove it until 150,000 kms, then replaced timing belt & water pump, front engine mount. Couple months after the rear wheel bearings got noisy was replaced. I also received a letter from Honda to recall the Takata airbags, was replaced no charge at the dealership . At 192,000 kms oil pan started to leak a bit of engine oil, & transmission oil hose to engine leaked. Tranny oil and hose replaced. Next oil change I'll be getting the oil pan gasket replaced. Owned the car for 3 years ( since 2018). A friend sold the car to me for a good deal. Spent over $3,000 CAN in repairs. Overall still a good vehicle after putting 42,000 kms since my ownership. Air conditioning still blows cold with no recharging required. Digital odometer sometimes goes blank on&off 30% of the time but comes back eventually. Factory 16” alloy wheel paint peeling off. Body paint is intact. Engine and transmission is smooth with lots of power even for today's standard. Regarding fuel economy I get an Average of 24mpg. I'm aware of “transmission issues” on these models thus making sure to replace tranny oil every 40-50 thousand kms with Genuine Honda fluid is important. My recommendation for people interested in buying one is to make a vehicle checklist before hand that way you won't miss on anything, Or if not mechanically inclined best to bring the vehicle to a shop for inspection prior to purchase.
Victoria
In 2017 I bought the car with 191,000 for $1,400. It's a Florida car, so no rust. Even though I paid dearly for a new radiator, fuel pump, and rack and pinion, I still consider it a good car. Due to age, various interior buttons and switches are dry rotting and falling apart. It has all its original factory parts-- zippy 4 cylinder engine, nice sound system, non-leaking moon roof, cassette/CD player, cold a/c, Honda rims. Its sporty and fun to drive. I just pray it'll last til I get something newer, at which time I'll donate it charity.
Negative Owner Reviews
Tannie
So far, it's my 2nd rank car on my favorite list. I gave 4 out of 5. My 1st car is Toyota Camry is by far my bestest. This 2002 Honda Accord ran kinda bumpy and air came thru both side of mirror. Everything else is a good condition car.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2002 Honda Accord features relatively basic technology compared to modern vehicles. Entertainment features typically included an AM/FM radio with a cassette player or optional CD player. Higher trims (LX, EX) offered upgraded audio systems. Driver-assistance features were limited, primarily consisting of cruise control on LX and EX models. Safety features included front airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS) were optional, and side airbags were available on some EX models. No advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking were available. Optional features varied by trim, including a sunroof, leather seats, and alloy wheels. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) were generally good for the 2002 Accord, typically scoring 4 or 5 stars in frontal and side impact tests. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) also rated the Accord favorably. Keep in mind that safety standards and crash-test methodologies have evolved significantly since 2002, so these ratings should be considered in that context. Built-in tech was minimal: basic trip computer functions might be available on the EX trim. The focus was on reliability and functionality rather than cutting-edge technology.

2002 Honda Accord Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2002 Honda Accord had a price range of approximately $15,000 to $25,000, depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices typically range from $2,000 to $6,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Accord has depreciated significantly over the years, but its strong reputation for reliability helps it retain some value compared to other vehicles of similar age. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition (especially rust), maintenance history, and trim level. Lower mileage examples in excellent condition command higher prices. The V6 models may hold slightly more value, but the potential for transmission issues can offset this advantage. The Accord's longevity and name recognition contribute to its decent resale value, even after two decades.

2002 Honda Accord Cost of Ownership

The 2002 Honda Accord is generally considered economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low due to its safety record and commonality. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially with the 4-cylinder engine. Maintenance is relatively affordable, with readily available parts and straightforward repairs. However, potential transmission repairs on V6 models can be costly. Long-term ownership costs are manageable if the vehicle is well-maintained and rust is prevented. Overall, the 2002 Accord offers a budget-friendly ownership experience, barring any major unforeseen repairs.

2002 Honda Accord Insurance

Insurance for a 2002 Honda Accord is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2002 Honda Accord Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2002 Honda Accord competed with the Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, Ford Taurus, and Mazda 626. In terms of reliability, the Accord and Camry were generally considered top-tier, surpassing the Taurus and Altima. The Altima offered sportier handling than the Accord, while the Taurus provided a more spacious interior. The Mazda 626 was a decent option but lacked the Accord's strong resale value. Feature-wise, the Accord offered a balanced package, but some rivals had slightly more features for the price. In terms of performance, the V6 Accord was competitive, but the 4-cylinder offered adequate but not exciting performance. Price-wise, the Accord was typically in the middle of the pack. A similar alternative to the 2002 Honda Accord would be the 2002 Toyota Camry. Both offered excellent reliability and a comfortable ride. If reliability is the top priority, the Camry is a worthy contender. If sporty handling is desired, the Nissan Altima might be preferable, but be aware of potential reliability concerns. The Ford Taurus is a less compelling option due to its lower reliability ratings. Overall, the Accord offers a solid balance of reliability, comfort, and features, making it a strong choice in its class. However, potential buyers should also consider the Toyota Camry for its similar attributes. Newer models from each manufacturer will offer more safety features and driver assistance.

Final Verdict: Is the 2002 Honda Accord a Good Sedan?

The 2002 Honda Accord is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a reliable and practical used car. It's a good choice for first-time car owners, students, or anyone needing a dependable commuter vehicle. Whether it's worth buying depends on its condition and price. A well-maintained example with lower mileage is a better investment. It's recommended to have a mechanic inspect any used Accord, especially checking for rust and transmission issues (particularly on V6 models). LX and EX trims offer more features than the base DX, but the DX can still be a good value if simplicity is preferred. Given its age, buying new is not an option; it's strictly a used car purchase. Overall, the 2002 Accord remains a worthwhile option if you prioritize reliability and affordability over modern features and performance.

2017 Garage find 2002 Honda Accord V-6 EX 22K mile

Smooth comfortable ride

My 2002 Accord Coupe is a Warrior

In 2017 I bought the car with 191,000 for $1,400. It's a Florida car, so no rust. Even though I paid dearly for a new radiator, fuel pump, and rack and pinion, I still consider it a good car. Due to age, various interior buttons and switches are dry rotting and falling apart. It has all its original factory parts-- zippy 4 cylinder engine, nice sound system, non-leaking moon roof, cassette/CD player, cold a/c, Honda rims. Its sporty and fun to drive. I just pray it'll last til I get something newer, at which time I'll donate it charity.

Nicest car I've owned

I previously had a Jetta 1.8t which was fun but I'm getting older and I needed something more reliable without a Christmas tree of CEL's. I found my 02' V6 Accord and fell in love with it and I didn't do enough research before buying. Long story short I needed another trans 1 month after purchase with only 115k miles. I got a low mileage used trans and had a leaky or faulty solenoid I got that buttoned up with all new fluid and it runs great. Car is very comfortable and smooth, mpgs aren't great but I'm willing to trade for the power of the V6. I plan on keeping it for a very long time. Make sure the trans was either replaced or fixed before buying!

Honda Accord reliability all the way~

Purchased date 1/10/2021I purchased my 2002 Honda Accord SE sedan with 86k miles. Interior looks brand new. Exterior has one scrape on the front bumper. I paid $4100. The owner provided all receipts from the years of maintenance. First timing belt was done at 58k . There was a airbag recall that was taken care a few years ago. Other that that this car has well taken care of. I was so upset when on 12/7/20 a man ran into my 1998 Honda Accord coupe and the insurance company totalled it. I had just done the second timing belt, value job and water pump and brakes & rotors. I only had 249k miles on it and I knew it was going to make it past 400k miles. I loved my Honda. I had the transmission rebuilt at 189k miles which afterwards I never had any issues. I faithfully had the car serviced and tires rotated. That car saved my life numerus times because of the superior handling. Insurance company is only paying $2200 because of the mileage. Even though I have receipts for the recent tires and timing belt job they only allow for parts no labor. I was devastated the estimate was for over $3600 in damages. It took two weeks of driving back and forth to Sacramento looking for a reliable used car that I could afford for under $5000. I prayed for a older couple that had a older model Honda with low miles that had been well taken care of. I was running out of time with the car rental and on Sunday at 4:45 pm I tried Craigslist one more time. God delivered. This older couple had just posted the Honda with a email only. I messaged 4 times begging to be called. They called me first. The moment I saw the Silver Sedan pull up I knew it was the right car. I had just had the oil changed and after reading your reviews I now know I must have the transmission service done asap. And next will be the second timing belt at 100k. I trust Honda's product and I know as long as I take care of my car it will last for over 400k

Most reliable car I've ever owned

This car was the most reliable car owned. Always turned on in the coldest of winters. Always performed. I'd keep this car longer if I didn't need something bigger. Highly recommend.

Best car I've owned to date

Previous car was an 03' 1.8t Jetta which was zippy and fun to drive but always needing repairs. This Accord is like a Swiss watch compared to that it's just so solid and well built. Everything works and the ride with the V6 is so smooth. I found one with only 106k miles and plan on keeping it for a Long time. Happy buyer.

Most reliable car I ever owned

Excellent value for the money. I owned it for almost 20 years. Other than oil changes, breaks, tires and some belts, the car gave me no problems

My 6th Honda and I HATE That I Need a New One

Bought this car when it was 2 years old in 2004 and it was one of the best purchases I've ever made. NOTHING has ever broken down on the car - all I needed to do was regular maintenance. I did get the transmission rebuilt at 195,000 miles and I swear it has more pickup and zip than it did when I first got it. This car got me and my daughter through some very stressful, troubling times in my life safely without worry or problem. It's been a true blue dependable partner, but it's time to start looking for an upgrade. Sigh.
