What Problems Does the 2009 Honda Accord Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2009 Honda Accord include potential excessive oil consumption, particularly in the four-cylinder engines. Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission, including rough shifting or slipping, although this is more prevalent in earlier years of the eighth generation (2008 models especially). Another concern is related to the V6 models; some owners have experienced issues with the variable cylinder management (VCM) system, leading to vibrations or rough idling. Recalls for the 2009 Accord have addressed issues ranging from airbags to fuel pump relays. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the aforementioned oil consumption and transmission problems. Checking the vehicle's history for consistent maintenance and addressing any potential symptoms early can help mitigate these risks. It's advisable to obtain a pre-purchase inspection from a trusted mechanic to assess the vehicle's overall condition and identify any potential issues before making a purchase. Rust can also be a concern in regions with heavy road salt use.

How long will the 2009 Honda Accord last?

A 2009 Honda Accord, with proper maintenance, can easily reach 200,000 miles or more and provide 15+ years of service. Good maintenance habits, including regular oil changes, fluid checks, and timely repairs, are crucial. Long-term durability is generally strong, but potential weaknesses include the aforementioned oil consumption issues in 4-cylinder engines and possible transmission problems. Rust can also become a factor, especially in regions with salted roads. Consistent care ensures extended lifespan and reduces the risk of major repairs.
Positive Owner Reviews

This car met all my needs throughout the time I have owned it, really really reliable car, really good on gas, and just plain out amazing.
Kanne422
First car I've owned with no issues, not even one! Drives nice, heated seats were a nice feature too. Lots of trunk space and very roomy if you have 4-5 people in the car also.
CarolW
My Honda is everything I wanted in a used car. I am very happy with the way it rides. It has lots of room inside and a large trunk.
Negative Owner Reviews
Darius Padgett
Less than a month of purchasing, I need a new engine and the warranty company will not honor their warranty so now I have to sue the warranty company
FS
Owned for 5 years, did brake job twice, replaced front hub bearings, wind noise, interior rattle. 100k miles

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Honda Accord offers a range of built-in tech and safety features. Standard entertainment includes a CD player, and available upgrades include a premium audio system. Higher trims like the EX-L offer optional navigation systems. Driver-assistance features were limited for this model year compared to modern cars; it primarily focused on standard safety features like anti-lock brakes (ABS), vehicle stability assist (VSA), and traction control.

Safety features include front, side, and curtain airbags. The 2009 Honda Accord received good crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA. The IIHS awarded it a "Top Safety Pick". Optional features on higher trims include leather upholstery, heated seats, and dual-zone climate control. While lacking advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring found in newer vehicles, the Accord provides a solid foundation of standard safety features for its time. The available navigation system was a desirable option, but it's a more basic system compared to modern infotainment setups. Overall, the 2009 Accord prioritized safety and user-friendly entertainment over cutting-edge tech.

2009 Honda Accord Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Honda Accord ranged from approximately $20,000 to $30,000 depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $12,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Accord's strong reputation for reliability helps it retain its value well compared to some competitors. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, service history, and trim level. Lower mileage and well-maintained examples fetch higher prices. Depreciation has been significant, but the Accord holds its value better than many other cars in its class.

2009 Honda Accord Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Honda Accord is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially with the four-cylinder engine. Maintenance is relatively affordable due to the car's reliability and readily available parts. Repairs are also usually manageable, although potential transmission or oil consumption issues could lead to higher costs. Overall, long-term ownership costs are below average for a mid-size sedan, making it a cost-effective choice.

2009 Honda Accord Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Honda Accord is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Honda Accord Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2009 Honda Accord competes with the Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion, and Chevrolet Malibu. In terms of reliability, the Accord is on par with the Camry and often considered more reliable than the Altima, Fusion, and Malibu. The Camry might offer slightly better fuel economy in some configurations.

Feature-wise, the Accord is competitive but might lack some of the advanced tech available in some newer rivals, even at that time (depending on trim). Performance is solid, especially with the V6 engine, offering a more engaging driving experience than the Camry. Price-wise, the Accord typically commands a slightly higher premium on the used market due to its reputation.

Alternatives to consider include the Toyota Camry for ultimate reliability and the Mazda 6 for a sportier driving experience. The Ford Fusion is also a viable option if looking for a more stylish design at a potentially lower price. The Camry offers similar reliability, but the Accord edges it out slightly in handling and available power (with the V6). If reliability is the utmost priority, the Camry is a close alternative. If a sportier drive is desired, consider the Mazda 6.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Honda Accord a Good Sedan?

The 2009 Honda Accord is ideal for buyers seeking a reliable and practical mid-size sedan. It's worth buying as a used car, particularly if it has a well-documented service history and has been inspected for potential oil consumption or transmission issues. The EX and EX-L trims offer desirable features without breaking the bank. The four-cylinder engine is sufficient for most drivers, while the V6 provides more spirited performance. Avoid models with a history of major issues or neglect. A pre-purchase inspection is highly recommended to ensure a trouble-free ownership experience.

Most reliable car i've owned

First car I've owned with no issues, not even one! Drives nice, heated seats were a nice feature too. Lots of trunk space and very roomy if you have 4-5 people in the car also.

Love my Honda

My Honda is everything I wanted in a used car. I am very happy with the way it rides. It has lots of room inside and a large trunk.

2009 Accord EX-l

Purchased in 2009 and routine maintenance only through 2020. Comfortable driver cabin configuration and seating with lots of useful features for the model year. We bought a 2016 Honda Civic for commuting and it is also very reliable.

This car meet all my needs. Honestly, I enjoy driving this vehicle, I think it's the best V4 sedan and I find it very reliable if you take care of it .

Reliable used car

This car is an used cash car, it's reliable and in good condition. It has a few cosmetic problems but nothing I can't fix for a couple of bucks. This car really was a steal for how much I paid.
