What Problems Does the 2004 Honda Accord Have?

The 2004 Honda Accord, while generally reliable, does have some commonly reported problems. One of the most prevalent is potential transmission issues, particularly with the V6 models equipped with automatic transmissions. Some owners have reported slipping or harsh shifting, which can eventually lead to costly repairs. Another frequent complaint involves excessive oil consumption, especially in higher-mileage four-cylinder engines. This requires vigilant monitoring of oil levels and more frequent top-offs.

Premature brake wear is another reported issue, with some owners needing to replace brake pads and rotors more often than expected. Paint issues, such as clear coat failure and fading, are also relatively common, particularly in warmer climates.

Regarding recalls, it's important to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) database for any outstanding recalls related to the 2004 Accord. Recalls can address safety-related defects, and repairs are typically performed free of charge by Honda dealerships.

Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the aforementioned transmission and oil consumption issues. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and transmission fluid flushes, can help mitigate these problems. Inspecting the vehicle thoroughly before purchase and addressing any identified issues promptly are crucial for ensuring long-term reliability.

How long will the 2004 Honda Accord last?

A well-maintained 2004 Honda Accord can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. With consistent maintenance, many owners report exceeding 250,000 or even 300,000 miles. Years of service can range from 15 to 20+ years, depending on driving conditions and care. Long-term durability is generally excellent, but weaknesses can emerge. The automatic transmission, particularly in V6 models, is a potential weak point. Oil consumption, especially in the 4-cylinder engines, can also become an issue with age. Regular fluid changes (oil, transmission, coolant) are critical for maximizing longevity. Rust can also become a concern in regions with harsh winters.

I have owned a honda accord since 1989. I still own my 2004 V6 coupe it's still very reliable, it's my back up car. I own a 2018 accord too. My 1989 accord lasted 360,000 miles before I got a 2000 accord. Great cars. The body needs painting from CA sun ruining it after 20 years but it will cost too much to repaint! But I still drive it!
JEFF FENHOLT
This is absolutely THE GREATEST CARS EVER MADE IN THE WORLD. THEY ARE BULLET-PROOF CARS made to drive for 350,000 miles or easily up to 400,000 miles since they are made to last with that incredible VTECH engine. Easy to drive, easy to park, glorious looking and fast as lightning especially with a 5 speed manual transmission.
Dennis T. S
I love this car for the short time I owned it. While driving in 5th gear went to shift down to fourth gear and it went to second gear and blew out of head. But in a car like this it should not be able to shift from 5th to second with no resistance. Took it a Honda three different times to get fixed for the same problem and they said it was not the same problem. They would not take it back even though it was a lemon. Meaning I took it back for the same exact problem three times. So be careful because the gear shifting is not good. Now that most of the Honda is made in America it does not run as good!

I enjoy honda and Toyota with the room they have in back seat and just how I feel when I'm driving the vehicles

Honda most say are very well vehicles they will last as long as we keep it tuned up and change oil up it could last a lifetime

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2004 Honda Accord offered a reasonable set of features for its time. Built-in tech and entertainment varied by trim level. The base DX model had limited features, while the LX added amenities like cruise control and keyless entry. The EX and EX-L trims offered upgraded audio systems, including optional CD changers and premium sound. Navigation was not a common factory option in 2004, though aftermarket systems were available.

Driver-assistance features were relatively limited compared to modern vehicles. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were standard on most trims, and traction control was available on some V6 models. However, features like lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control were not available.

Safety features included dual front airbags, side airbags (optional on some trims), and seatbelt pretensioners. The 2004 Honda Accord generally performed well in crash tests. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) awarded it high ratings for frontal and side impact protection. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) also gave it good ratings in their frontal offset crash test.

Optional features included a sunroof, leather upholstery, heated seats, and upgraded audio systems. While not packed with cutting-edge technology by today's standards, the 2004 Accord provided a comfortable and safe driving experience for its time.

2004 Honda Accord Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2004 Honda Accord ranged from approximately $16,000 for the base DX model to around $26,000 for a fully equipped EX-L V6. Current used market prices vary significantly based on condition, mileage, and location. Expect to find them priced anywhere from $2,000 to $8,000, with exceptionally clean, low-mileage examples potentially fetching slightly more.

The Accord has historically held its value well due to its reputation for reliability. However, age and mileage significantly impact resale value. Factors affecting resale include: overall condition (rust-free, well-maintained), mileage, trim level (EX and EX-L models tend to command higher prices), and accident history. The Accord depreciates over time, but generally at a slower rate than many of its competitors.

2004 Honda Accord Cost of Ownership

The 2004 Honda Accord is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel economy is decent, especially with the 4-cylinder engine. Maintenance costs are relatively low due to the car's reliability and readily available parts. Repairs can be more expensive if transmission issues arise on V6 models. Overall, long-term ownership costs are considered reasonable, making it a cost-effective choice for budget-conscious buyers. Regular maintenance is key to minimizing unexpected expenses.

2004 Honda Accord Insurance

Insurance for a 2004 Honda Accord is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2004 Honda Accord Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2004 Honda Accord competed with the Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, Mazda 6, and Ford Taurus. Compared to the Camry, the Accord offered a sportier driving experience, though the Camry often held a slight edge in perceived reliability (though both are excellent). The Altima provided more aggressive styling and sometimes a lower price point, but its long-term reliability wasn't always on par with the Accord.

The Mazda 6 was the sportiest of the bunch, offering superior handling, but its interior wasn't as refined as the Accord's. The Ford Taurus was a larger, more comfort-oriented option, but it lacked the Accord's reputation for reliability and fuel efficiency.

In terms of reliability and resale value, the Accord and Camry were top contenders. If sporty handling is a priority, the Mazda 6 is a good alternative. For those prioritizing value and don't mind potentially sacrificing some long-term reliability, the Altima can be considered. However, for a balanced combination of reliability, performance, features, and resale value, the 2004 Honda Accord remains a strong choice. Depending on individual needs and budget, all of these are viable options.

Final Verdict: Is the 2004 Honda Accord a Good Sedan?

The 2004 Honda Accord is an excellent choice for budget-minded buyers seeking a reliable and practical used car. It's ideal for commuters, small families, or anyone needing a dependable vehicle for daily driving. Whether it's worth buying depends on the vehicle's condition and price. A well-maintained example with reasonable mileage is generally a good investment.

Consider the 4-cylinder models for better fuel economy, but be mindful of potential oil consumption issues. Carefully inspect any potential purchase for signs of transmission problems, especially in V6 models. Prioritize models with documented maintenance history and a clean bill of health from a trusted mechanic. Avoid models with excessive rust or significant accident damage. Buying a used 2004 Honda Accord can be a smart decision if you do your homework and find a well-cared-for vehicle.

I have owned a honda accord since 1989.

Horrible car pile of garbage

These cars are awful. They are unreliable. Mines was a nightmare worst car I ever owned. It had a bunch of leaks on the engine, and transmission leaked and kept somehow getting oil mixed in my transmission fluid. The transmissions are garbage and mines blew. Left me without a car. The transmission is paper tissue.

BEST CAR ON EARTH

This is absolutely THE GREATEST CARS EVER MADE IN THE WORLD. THEY ARE BULLET-PROOF CARS made to drive for 350,000 miles or easily up to 400,000 miles since they are made to last with that incredible VTECH engine. Easy to drive, easy to park, glorious looking and fast as lightning especially with a 5 speed manual transmission.

Lemon

I love this car for the short time I owned it. While driving in 5th gear went to shift down to fourth gear and it went to second gear and blew out of head. But in a car like this it should not be able to shift from 5th to second with no resistance. Took it a Honda three different times to get fixed for the same problem and they said it was not the same problem. They would not take it back even though it was a lemon. Meaning I took it back for the same exact problem three times. So be careful because the gear shifting is not good. Now that most of the Honda is made in America it does not run as good!

31 years of Accords

i have driven 1980s Accords for 30+ years so it took a little getting used to the much larger size of this gen of Accord when parking and maneuvering. the handling is a little mushy, probably because i have the sedan. my friend has an 07 coupe which has tighter handling. and no review would be complete without a mention of the famous durability/dependability of Honda vehicles! i am very happy with this car. 🙂

best used car to buy

I've owed this car for a good while and almost no issues I love it and I would say buy it if you can! I love how it handles and it is good in the snow if you get the write tiers. And yes if I were buying this car for my kid I would feel safe!
