The Good
The 2004 Cayenne offered thrilling Porsche performance in an SUV package. Its comfortable and luxurious interior appealed to those seeking a practical family vehicle with a sporty edge. The distinctive Porsche design added an emotional draw, while its robust build provided a sense of reliability, even if fuel efficiency wasn't its strongest suit.
The Bad
The 2004 Cayenne's weaknesses include potential air suspension issues, coolant pipe failures (especially in early models), and high maintenance costs. Electrical gremlins can also surface. Prospective buyers should thoroughly inspect the vehicle's service history and conduct a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified Porsche mechanic, paying close attention to these common problem areas.

How Does the 2004 Porsche Cayenne Compare to Other Wagon?
Compared to the X5, the Cayenne's maintenance costs are higher and it has had more reported reliability issues. The Cayenne's initial price was higher than some rivals, and its current used price reflects its depreciation and higher running costs.
Alternatives with better reliability include the Lexus RX330/350 or Acura MDX. For similar performance but potentially lower maintenance, a later model BMW X5 (especially one with a well-documented service history) might be considered, but all will still come with higher than average maintenance costs when compared to a Japanese SUV. The Infiniti FX series could also be an option, providing similar performance and a luxurious feel, but with a different aesthetic.

W carThis was an amazing vehicle to own. It's currently at about 180k miles, and it runs perfectly! It really only needs regular maintenance, to be honest. It's never broken down once.

Cayenne S - Worst piece of junk I have ownedI bought this because it was the only SUV that could pull a 2 horse trailer and it would be fun to drive. This vehicle didn’t even make it to 100k miles and the engine seized on a below zero day in Minnesota !! The coolant tubes , a known issue for this car but not published at the time, broke and the engine seized ! No warning , and no support from Porsche in any way. The Wayzata dealership is horrible. What an embarrassment to Porsche . It is sick that a company like this does not stand behind their vehicle. The recall came out after my car was ruined and they don’t even pay anything to those that have a now junk car. My car was pampered and still looks like new, but it is a boat anchor. I can get about a thousand scrap, even though I had just spent $1000 on a new headlight ....

A beautiful beast of a carI bought my second hand 2004 V6 3.2 Porsche Cayenne two years ago off eBay. An absolute bargain. It was a risk but what a great car this is. 165k miles on the clock but still reliable, comfortable, great performance and beats anyone off the lights. Fuel consumption is around 22 mpg so one of the downsides. Ideal for my family of five as so much room and the boot is very spacious. Love the look of it too, especially the front. Watch out for known problems like the boot will not stay open as the locking mechanism has broken, I’ve had problems with the air bag dashboard light but finally resolved by Porsche. Also original Sat Nav Isn’t working properly but apart from that is a great car. £80k luxury for a fraction of the price.

Very Reliable Amazing DriveBought mine used with 240,000 kms near Toronto, Ontario, two and a half years ago. Used daily for all seasons except winter (to avoid all the crazy salt in the city). Such a pleasure to drive —on turns almost feels like your going straight! Took my daughter for a soccer trip to Michigan on some curvy roads. Seats were exceptionally comfortable for the entire drive, sound system was crisp, and occasional acceleration was a thrill. Look forward to another trip just to take it out for a long spin — perhaps after Covid. Liked it so much bought a 958 S with the Panamera-like interior. Still, can’t seem to part with my 955 S so now the plan is to use it in winter months... can’t wait to feel the handling in snow and up Canadian winter hills! If you don’t own one, you can find 955 S for a steal. Use it to pull boats, off-roading, pleasure driving or just daily commuting. Such a joy to drive —try one out and see for yourself why Porsche has such a great reputation.

The Porsche Cayenne is the Steamhammer of SUVs.My little red Porsche Cayenne S with 45k miles and a V8 engine hauls out. Transmission hits every gear just right, steering and handling are the best of any SUV. I always say German cars cast twice as much and are 10 times better than their competitors. Porsche is the best of them all.
