Key trims include the base Cayenne, S, GTS, Turbo, and Turbo S, alongside diesel and hybrid options. New, prices ranged from approximately $50,000 to over $140,000 depending on the trim and options. Its Porsche pedigree and impressive driving dynamics for an SUV make it popular.
The Good

The 2014 Cayenne offers exceptional performance, precise handling, and powerful engine options, appealing to driving enthusiasts. Its luxurious interior and comfortable ride cater to practical needs. While not the most fuel-efficient, its reliability is generally good, and the iconic Porsche design adds to its desirability. It's a status symbol that also performs everyday tasks.

The Bad

What Problems Does the 2014 Porsche Cayenne Have?

The 2014 Porsche Cayenne, while generally reliable, has some frequently reported problems. Coolant pipe failures are a common concern, particularly in older models, leading to coolant leaks and potential engine overheating. Transfer case issues have been reported, causing unusual noises or difficulty shifting. Some owners have experienced electrical glitches, affecting systems like the navigation, infotainment, or various sensors. The air suspension, while offering a comfortable ride, can be prone to leaks and costly repairs as the vehicle ages.

Recalls for the 2014 Cayenne have been issued for issues such as fuel leaks and potential steering problems. Long-term reliability can be affected by proper maintenance and driving habits. Neglecting scheduled maintenance or subjecting the vehicle to harsh conditions can exacerbate existing weaknesses. It's important to check the vehicle's history for any previous recalls or service records related to these known issues. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended to identify potential problems before purchasing a used 2014 Cayenne. Owners often report that maintaining the vehicle according to Porsche's recommendations helps mitigate some of these long-term concerns.

How long will the 2014 Porsche Cayenne last?

With good maintenance, a 2014 Porsche Cayenne can easily reach 150,000-200,000 miles or more. Many owners report over a decade of service. However, long-term durability hinges on consistent upkeep.

Weaknesses that emerge over time include potential air suspension issues (leaks, compressor failure), coolant leaks (particularly from plastic pipes), and increased risk of electrical problems. Proper maintenance, like timely fluid changes and addressing minor issues promptly, is crucial for extending its lifespan and preventing major repairs.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 Porsche Cayenne features a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Bluetooth connectivity, and a premium audio system (Bose or Burmester available as options). Standard safety features include anti-lock brakes, stability control, and a suite of airbags.

Available driver-assistance features included adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and a rearview camera. These were often optional extras.

Crash test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) were generally good, though specific ratings can vary. It's recommended to consult these agencies' websites for the most accurate and up-to-date information. Note that smaller overlap front crash tests became more prevalent around this time, which may impact ratings depending on when the Cayenne was tested.

The infotainment system, while functional, can feel dated compared to newer systems. Optional features like the panoramic sunroof, upgraded audio, and various appearance packages enhanced the overall experience but also increased the vehicle's price. Porsche also offered options like Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) and ParkAssist.

2014 Porsche Cayenne Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2014 Porsche Cayenne ranged from around $50,000 to over $140,000, depending on the trim and options. As of late 2023, used prices typically range from $18,000 to $45,000, influenced by mileage, condition, and trim level.

The Cayenne depreciates, but holds its value relatively well compared to some luxury SUVs, owing to the Porsche brand. Lower mileage, excellent condition, a clean title, and desirable options (like the Turbo or Turbo S trim) boost resale value. Higher mileage, accident history, and deferred maintenance negatively impact the price.

2014 Porsche Cayenne Cost of Ownership

The 2014 Porsche Cayenne is generally costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher than average due to its luxury status and performance capabilities. Fuel costs can be significant, especially with the V8 engines. Maintenance and repairs are expensive, requiring specialized Porsche technicians and parts. While the diesel variant offers better fuel economy, overall, the Cayenne is not an economical choice for budget-conscious buyers. Expect higher-than-average long-term ownership costs compared to non-luxury SUVs.

How Does the 2014 Porsche Cayenne Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2014 Porsche Cayenne competes with luxury SUVs like the BMW X5, Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz M-Class (now GLE), and Land Rover Range Rover Sport.

Performance: The Cayenne excels in performance and handling, often surpassing its rivals. The BMW X5 offers a similar sporty driving experience. The Range Rover Sport prioritizes off-road capability.

Features: Features are comparable across the segment, though Porsche often charges extra for options that are standard on competitors.

Reliability: Reliability is generally good, but the Cayenne can be more prone to certain issues (coolant pipes, air suspension) compared to the Lexus RX or Acura MDX (though those aren't direct competitors in driving dynamics). The Audi Q7 shares some components with the Cayenne, potentially leading to similar reliability concerns.

Price: The Cayenne can be more expensive to buy and maintain than some competitors.

Alternatives: A BMW X5 offers similar performance and a more modern interior. The Audi Q7 provides a more spacious interior. The Lexus RX is a more reliable, though less sporty, option. The Mercedes-Benz GLE offers a blend of luxury and comfort.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Porsche Cayenne a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2014 Porsche Cayenne is ideal for buyers who prioritize performance, luxury, and the Porsche brand. It's worth buying used if you're willing to accept potentially higher maintenance costs. A pre-purchase inspection is crucial. The Turbo or Turbo S trims offer exhilarating performance but come with increased fuel consumption and maintenance. The base or S trims provide a good balance of performance and practicality. If reliability and low running costs are paramount, consider alternatives. Overall, the 2014 Cayenne is a rewarding vehicle for enthusiasts willing to invest in its upkeep.

Sporty SUV

I love driving my Cayenne. It's a great blend of sportiness and functionality. The GTS model looks awesome on the road. I would likely buy this model again.

Affordable Luxury

I’ve been looking for this type of SUV for some time now. Older model styling with low miles and still in great condition. I look forward to road trips exploring more of beautiful Arizona.

Well maintained with all records so I bought it

I expect this Cayenne to serve as my primary vehicle for next 10 years. At 6 years, 81,870 miles & serviced per factory schedule, it has a good chance. The original owner spent $10,500 in maintenance + factory warranty repaired several major items (costs unknown) + selling dealer spent $3,350 on new tires & new windshield. I think this Cay will only need regular servicing under my ownership, driving it about 5,000 miles per year. Unless the AC or heater system has a failure. I'll update this review if experience warrants.

Diesel Platinum will save you

This car gets great gas mileage for a diesel. I fill up my gas tank every 8 weeks, no joke. Very reliable and comfortable. Great storage. A lot of room in the second row.

First Cayenne Turbo, but not last!

This is my first Porsche ownership experience but I now understand the almost fanatical obsession with owning and driving these cars. First it is solid, extremely well made, it performs phenomenally and handles like a dream and then is comfortable too. The size is perfect and to be honest I bought it so I could feel safe about my 4 year old daughter riding with me. Could not be happier with the TOTAL package and her first car is likely to be a Porsche 🙂

A very solid vehicle with attention to comfort.

A very solid vehicle with attention to detail, performance, safety, comfort and reliability. Is the only vehicle I believe to be superior to Lexus. I have a Lexus also.

Needed a vehicle to replace our old Tahoe. We test drove this one and also a Cadillac. The Porsche won hands down. Better comfort, performance, and features.

80,000 miles, ave 34 MPG, few problems, great serv

A much better driving experience than the Lexus 330 I drove for 10 years. Service as good as Lexus and the long term cost less than the Lexus based on the lower cost of diesel and the great mpg. Received 15% of my purchase price back because of the VW folly! The reprogramming gave me no loss of mpg.
