Rating: 4.32
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2007 Toyota RAV4 is a compact SUV that marked the third generation of the popular RAV4 line. Known for its reliability and practicality, it offered a blend of car-like handling and SUV versatility. Available as a 5-door SUV, key trims included Base, Sport, and Limited. New pricing ranged from approximately $20,000 to $25,000. Its spacious interior, available V6 engine, and Toyota's reputation for dependability contributed to its popularity.
The Good

The 2007 Toyota RAV4 excels in reliability, offering peace of mind to practical buyers. Its comfortable ride and spacious interior provide a pleasant experience for passengers. The available V6 engine delivers surprisingly peppy performance, appealing to those seeking a bit more fun. Good fuel efficiency for its class and strong resale value make it a smart choice.

The Bad

Some 2007 RAV4s experienced issues with the automatic transmission, particularly with rough shifting. The base 4-cylinder engine can feel underpowered when fully loaded. The interior plastics can seem cheap and prone to scratching. Also, be aware of potential oil consumption issues in higher-mileage examples. Rust can be a concern in areas with heavy road salt use.

What Problems Does the 2007 Toyota RAV4 Have?

The 2007 Toyota RAV4, while generally reliable, does have some frequently reported problems. One common issue is excessive oil consumption, particularly in the 2.4L 4-cylinder engine. Owners have reported needing to add oil frequently between changes. The automatic transmission can also experience rough or delayed shifting, potentially leading to costly repairs. Some owners have reported premature brake wear. There have been recalls for the 2007 RAV4, including issues related to the power window master switch (potential fire hazard) and brake pedal arm strength. Check the NHTSA website for the latest recall information. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around rust, especially in areas where road salt is used. The interior plastics, while durable, can show wear and tear over time. Premature failure of the water pump has also been reported. Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly can mitigate some of these long-term concerns. Before purchasing a used 2007 RAV4, a thorough inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended.

How long will the 2007 Toyota RAV4 last?

With good maintenance, a 2007 Toyota RAV4 can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report 15-20 years of service. However, longevity heavily depends on consistent maintenance habits, including regular oil changes, timely replacement of wear items (brakes, tires, etc.), and addressing any issues promptly. The 2.4L engine may require more frequent oil checks due to the potential for consumption. Weaknesses over time include potential rust, especially in colder climates. Suspension components may also need replacement as the vehicle ages. Keeping up with maintenance is key to maximizing the RAV4's lifespan.

I like Toyota.. However, living in AZ, you don't get the correct information about the recalls they have. I've been trying to get this information since I purchased the. car, 2018. I just wish Toyota would have answered the letter I sent them.

Exterior and interior styling of this car is not the best.. Although what you are getting for the car is super reliability and a nice sized car with great gas mileage.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2007 Toyota RAV4 offered a reasonable suite of technology for its time. Standard features included an AM/FM/CD stereo with six speakers. Higher trims offered upgrades like a JBL premium sound system and a multi-disc CD changer. Navigation was an optional feature. Driver-assistance features were relatively limited compared to modern vehicles, but included anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), and traction control. Safety features included front airbags, side airbags, and side curtain airbags.
Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) were generally good. The RAV4 received a "Good" rating in the moderate overlap front crash test. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) awarded the RAV4 four stars for driver and front passenger protection in frontal crashes, and five stars for side impact protection. Optional features included daytime running lights and a tire pressure monitoring system. Overall, the 2007 RAV4 provided a solid level of safety and technology for its era, though it lacks the advanced driver-assistance systems found in newer vehicles. The absence of features like Bluetooth connectivity in the base models is notable by today's standards.

2007 Toyota RAV4 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2007 Toyota RAV4 ranged from approximately $20,000 for the base model to around $25,000 for a fully equipped Limited trim. Used market prices today typically range from $5,000 to $10,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The RAV4 has depreciated significantly, but it has historically held its value relatively well compared to some competitors, thanks to Toyota's reputation for reliability. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, maintenance history, and whether the vehicle is front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive (AWD models typically command a higher price).

2007 Toyota RAV4 Cost of Ownership

The 2007 Toyota RAV4 is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel economy is decent for its class, especially with the 4-cylinder engine. Maintenance costs are relatively low, due to Toyota's reliability and readily available parts. However, potential transmission issues and oil consumption can lead to unexpected repair bills. Long-term ownership costs are generally predictable and affordable, making it a budget-friendly choice, provided major repairs are avoided or addressed proactively.

2007 Toyota RAV4 Insurance

Insurance for a 2007 Toyota RAV4 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2007 Toyota RAV4 Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2007 Toyota RAV4 competed with vehicles like the Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, and Subaru Forester. The RAV4 often stood out for its available V6 engine, offering more power than many competitors. The Honda CR-V was known for its refinement and fuel efficiency, while the Subaru Forester offered standard all-wheel drive. The Nissan Rogue, introduced later, provided a stylish design and comfortable interior.
In terms of reliability, the RAV4 and CR-V were generally considered top choices. Feature-wise, the competition was fairly even, though the specific features varied by trim level and model year. Price-wise, the vehicles were also comparable. If you prioritize fuel efficiency and refinement over outright power, the Honda CR-V is a similar alternative. For standard all-wheel drive, the Subaru Forester is a good option. If you want something a bit more modern, consider a newer generation of the RAV4 or CR-V, but be prepared to pay more. The Mazda CX-5, while not a direct competitor in 2007, offers a more engaging driving experience in later model years and might be worth considering if you are looking at newer alternatives.

Final Verdict: Is the 2007 Toyota RAV4 a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2007 Toyota RAV4 is a solid choice for those seeking a reliable and practical compact SUV. It's ideal for individuals or small families who prioritize dependability and cargo space. Whether it's worth buying depends heavily on its condition and price. A well-maintained model with a clean history and no signs of major issues is worth considering. Avoid examples with high mileage or signs of neglect. The V6 engine is desirable if you want more power, but the 4-cylinder is more fuel-efficient. Given its age, buying used is the only option. Thorough inspection before purchase is crucial.

Nearly the perfect SUV for it's era!!!

I've owned dozens and dozens of car and this one has impressed me the most. Tons of power from the V6, typical Toyota reliability, very ergonomic, and very capable. I've hauled weight in this thing that would rival any truck and pulled a trailer that was double it's load rating. I can't say enough good things about it CONS: Brakes are just two small for this weight! The side opening rear door

Toyota Rav4 07

I like Toyota.. However, living in AZ, you don't get the correct information about the recalls they have. I've been trying to get this information since I purchased the. car, 2018. I just wish Toyota would have answered the letter I sent them.

However I was putting excessive amounts of oil n her a week, and my oil light never came on I could always tell when it started to get low the engine became louder....!

Jaded Toyofan on January 29, 2021

Worst car I've ever owned.

This model along with the 2006 through 2011 4 cylinder, and this is for all four cylinder Toyota vehicles, have defective piston rings and their engines will fail.

Exactly what I was looking for. Car is very clean. Has the styling I was interested in with the spare tire on the outside. It was low mileage and runs great.
