Rating: 4.44
Based on 83 Owner Reviews
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2009 Toyota RAV4 is a compact SUV that builds upon Toyota's reputation for reliability. Available as a 5-door SUV, it's part of the RAV4's third generation (2006-2012). Key trims include the base, Sport, and Limited. Its popularity stems from its practical size, good fuel economy, and Toyota's dependable engineering. Pricing ranged from around $21,000 to $28,000 new, and used prices vary greatly depending on condition and mileage.
The Good

The 2009 Toyota RAV4 offers a blend of practicality and pleasant driving. Its reliability provides peace of mind, while the spacious interior and comfortable ride appeal to families. The available V6 engine delivers surprising pep, adding an element of fun. Fuel efficiency is decent for its class, enhancing its value proposition, making it a rational and enjoyable choice.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2009 RAV4 include somewhat bland interior styling and noticeable road noise at higher speeds. Some owners have reported issues with the electronic power steering. Premature tire wear can occur if alignment isn't properly maintained. Rust, especially in areas with road salt, should be inspected.

What Problems Does the 2009 Toyota RAV4 Have?

The 2009 Toyota RAV4 is generally considered reliable, but some common problems have been reported. Issues with the electronic power steering (EPS) system, such as stiffness or failure, have surfaced, although not widespread. Some owners report excessive oil consumption, particularly in higher-mileage vehicles. Water leaks into the cabin, potentially from the sunroof or windshield seals, have also been noted.

Regarding recalls, it's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN on the NHTSA website to determine if any recalls are outstanding. Recalls related to accelerator pedals (sticking) and floor mat entrapment were issued for some Toyota models around this time, so it's imperative to verify if the specific RAV4 was affected. Long-term reliability concerns primarily revolve around the potential for increased maintenance as the vehicle ages, including suspension components, brakes, and exhaust systems. Rust can be a significant issue in regions with heavy salt use on roads, so careful inspection of the undercarriage is advised. While generally reliable, addressing these potential issues proactively can help ensure the vehicle's longevity.

How long will the 2009 Toyota RAV4 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 Toyota RAV4 can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding this milestone. Expecting 15-20 years of service is realistic with consistent upkeep. Long-term durability strengths lie in its robust engine and transmission. Weaknesses can emerge in the suspension, particularly bushings and struts, as well as potential rust issues, especially in colder climates. Regular oil changes, timely brake service, and addressing any fluid leaks promptly are crucial for maximizing its lifespan. Maintaining the cooling system prevents overheating and extends engine life.

nicest preowned auto I've owned. Fell in love on the test drive. uses almost no gas and rides well love the styling of the body

We heard so many good things about this car/suv and this car in particular was low mileage for the year ... so we thought it the best of the cars we had seen so far ... we test drove it and we’re very happy with visibility - ease of turning radius - speed picking up - braking - Now after bringing it home and driving it in the dark - I will definitely want to get LED bulbs for better visibility But for the moment we are very happy with it right now
JohnAmer4ka
I had to replace the alternator, which I was able to do myself for about $150. Other than that had almost no problems. I did replace the back door latch, but also very minimal cost, to be expected, the engine was never a problem.
Negative Owner Reviews

This vehicle suspension is low-end for a quality (limited) suv. Leaf springs would make a big difference. The car is listed as AWD but the emblem says 4WD. It can not be locked into 4WD unless going <25mph. What good is that? Only use is getting out of a ditch. Maybe. My 2009 started to slide in a bad road condition. It had started to snow after raining. I was 2 miles from home and was 30mph when a truck came around the corner. It was a little too far on my side. I moved to the fog line and started to slip and head left. The 4WD did not activate. If it had I would have heard notification bells and buzzers. I hit the brakes and prayed. I ran into the grill and broke femur,hip,C6 neck vertabrae and rotator cuff. $90k operations (medicare). $2400 ambulance (mine) Months of recovery/rehab. On SS with no down payment for a vehicle.

I loved this vehicle for the first couple weeks. It handles great in bad roads, very smooth ride, slick look and lots of space. Not to mention the great gas milage. After the first couple of weeks I noticed that the paint started to chip off of the hood. Again I noticed a couple of days later the some more spots appeared. Of course toyota would not cover it do because the say its caused by rock Salt. Tome if you pay over $20,000.00 for a car the paint should not be coming off the car because of salt.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Toyota RAV4 offers a reasonable set of features for its time. Standard tech includes a CD player with AM/FM radio, and auxiliary audio input. Upper trims may feature a premium audio system with more speakers. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles, with standard anti-lock brakes (ABS) and stability control. Optional features included a sunroof, but advanced driver-assistance systems like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring were not available.

Safety features include front airbags, side airbags, and side curtain airbags. The RAV4 performed well in crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). NHTSA ratings typically include front and side impact scores, and rollover resistance. IIHS ratings assess performance in moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint tests. It's crucial to check specific ratings for the 2009 model year on the IIHS and NHTSA websites. The absence of modern driver-assistance tech is a key difference compared to newer SUVs.

2009 Toyota RAV4 Prices and Market Value

The 2009 Toyota RAV4 had a starting MSRP of around $21,000, with higher trims reaching up to $28,000 when new. Current used market prices range widely, typically from $6,000 to $12,000 depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. Depreciation has been significant, as expected for a vehicle of this age. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, maintenance history, geographic location (demand), and the presence of desirable options like the V6 engine or all-wheel drive. Well-maintained examples with lower mileage command higher prices.

2009 Toyota RAV4 Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Toyota RAV4 is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially with the 4-cylinder engine. Maintenance is relatively inexpensive, with Toyota parts readily available. Repairs are usually straightforward and less costly than some competitors. Long-term ownership costs are predictable, making it a budget-friendly choice compared to more complex or luxury SUVs. Its reliability minimizes unexpected repair bills.

2009 Toyota RAV4 Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Toyota RAV4 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Toyota RAV4 Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2009 Toyota RAV4 competed against vehicles like the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, and Chevrolet Equinox. In terms of reliability, the RAV4 and CR-V were generally considered top performers. The RAV4's optional V6 engine offered a performance advantage over many rivals. The Ford Escape offered a similar price point, but its reliability wasn't as consistently high. The Chevrolet Equinox provided more interior space, but its fuel economy lagged behind.

The Honda CR-V is a similar alternative, offering comparable reliability and practicality. The Subaru Forester provides standard all-wheel drive, which is appealing in snowy climates. If cargo space is a priority, the Equinox or Nissan Rogue might be considered. However, for a balance of reliability, performance (especially with the V6), and overall value, the 2009 RAV4 remains a strong contender. Buyers should prioritize condition and maintenance history when considering a used model.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Toyota RAV4 a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2009 Toyota RAV4 is an ideal choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking a reliable and practical compact SUV. It's well-suited for small families, commuters, and anyone needing a versatile vehicle for everyday use. While no longer available new, a used 2009 RAV4 can be a good value if it's been well-maintained. The V6 engine offers enjoyable performance, but the 4-cylinder is more fuel-efficient. Thoroughly inspect any used RAV4 for rust, maintenance records, and potential issues mentioned earlier before purchasing. If reliability and practicality are top priorities, the 2009 RAV4 is worth considering.

Recall the 2009 like you did in 2008.

My only issue is it uses a lot of oil they had a 2008 recall on oil consumption they did not do anything for the 2009 with the same. Uses a quart every 500 miles. Bad lower rings, Toyota knew that in 08.

Pushing 300,000 miles and still going strong

Bought this car new in June 2009. Drove it daily for 10 years before giving it to my 16 year old son. It currently has 287,000 miles on it and is still going strong. Other than a transmission rebuild at 248,000 miles it has been essentially trouble free. I performed the typical routine maintenance: 5,000 mile oil changes, 100,000 transmission fluid changes, 100,000 coolant changes, brake service as needed, etc. At 225,000 it started to use a quart of oil between oil changes which I don't see as unreasonable for a 4 cylinder at that milage. It is a 4WD model but in all honesty I rarely needed to use 4WD to get through the snow. Front wheel only more than sufficed. I would recommend this vehicle as a used car if you find one that has been reasonably well maintained.

AWD or 4WD. Safest?

New used car

We heard so many good things about this car/suv and this car in particular was low mileage for the year ... so we thought it the best of the cars we had seen so far ... we test drove it and we’re very happy with visibility - ease of turning radius - speed picking up - braking - Now after bringing it home and driving it in the dark - I will definitely want to get LED bulbs for better visibility But for the moment we are very happy with it right now

Required almost no maintenance.

I had to replace the alternator, which I was able to do myself for about $150. Other than that had almost no problems. I did replace the back door latch, but also very minimal cost, to be expected, the engine was never a problem.

Literal Life Saver

I was in a crash in 2015. This car did a very good job keeping me safe. I literally walked away with nothing more than sore muscles and the feeling of being emotionally shaken up. The car was totaled, but I am still glad it kept me safe. Would strongly recommend this car to literally anyone.
