The 2006 Honda Civic marked the start of the eighth generation, a significant redesign. Available in sedan and coupe body styles, this generation ran from 2006-2011. Key trims included DX, LX, EX, and Si. Known for its fuel efficiency, reliability, and distinctive styling (especially the coupe), the 2006 Civic was a popular choice. New pricing ranged from approximately $14,000 to $20,000, depending on the trim and options.

What Problems Does the 2006 Honda Civic Have?

The 2006 Honda Civic has several frequently reported problems. One of the most significant is the potential for engine block cracking, particularly in models with the 1.8L R18 engine. This issue was more prevalent in the earlier years of the eighth generation (2006-2008). Premature rear brake wear is another common complaint, requiring more frequent replacements than expected. Paint chipping, especially on the hood and roof, is also a known issue.
Some owners have experienced problems with the air conditioning system, including compressor failures and refrigerant leaks. Recalls for the 2006 Civic have addressed issues such as faulty fuel tank welds and potential airbag inflator malfunctions (Takata recall). Long-term reliability concerns revolve around the engine block issue, which can lead to costly repairs. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes and brake inspections, can help mitigate some of these problems, but the inherent design flaws remain a risk. It is advisable to thoroughly inspect any 2006 Civic for these issues before purchase.

How long will the 2006 Honda Civic last?

With proper maintenance, a 2006 Honda Civic can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report over 15 years of service. Good maintenance habits, including regular oil changes, timely repairs, and addressing issues promptly, are crucial. However, the engine block cracking issue can significantly impact long-term durability, potentially leading to premature engine failure. Rust, especially in colder climates with road salt, can also affect longevity. The Civic's robust drivetrain, otherwise, tends to be durable. Expect potentially diminished ride quality due to suspension wear over time.

I have two civics one is 06 civic ex coupe great mpg reliability strong automatic transmission.the other one is 2011 civic sedan LX I love this car have driven it long road trips great on gas reliable fairly cheap to maintain as well

This car was my baby for 14 years, I love it. Very few issues other than general wear and tear that happens over 14 years. I bought it in 2007 and ir only had about 1500 miles on it, now it has over 270,000 but still ran great. Sadly, my baby was totaled in accident a couple weeks ago and I would do anything to get it back. I love this car so much.
Honda
Very nice car. No mechanical issues whatsoever. I never gotten engine light on this car. I did just regular maintenance. This car take wherever I needed to go.
Negative Owner Reviews

The car had been in a head on crashed & was over priced. Nothing had been fixed nor replaced. The car ran & I guess that was enough for the dealer to charge me what he did.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2006 Honda Civic's built-in tech was relatively basic for its time. Standard entertainment features included an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims offered features like a premium audio system and MP3 playback. Driver-assistance features were limited, with cruise control available on the EX trim.
Safety features included standard front airbags, side airbags (optional on some trims), and anti-lock brakes (ABS). Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) was available on some models, enhancing safety in slippery conditions.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) were generally positive, with the 2006 Civic earning high scores in frontal and side-impact crash tests. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) also awarded the Civic good ratings for its crash performance. Optional features included a navigation system (rare for this model year) and leather seats on higher trims. Overall, the 2006 Civic prioritized safety and reliability over advanced technology, aligning with its target audience.

2006 Honda Civic Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2006 Honda Civic ranged from approximately $14,000 for the base DX model to around $20,000 for a fully equipped Si. Currently, used market prices vary widely based on condition, mileage, and location, typically ranging from $3,000 to $8,000.
Depreciation has been significant due to the car's age. Factors affecting resale value include the presence of the engine block cracking issue, overall condition, maintenance records, and mileage. Civics with clean titles and well-documented maintenance histories command higher prices. The Si model generally holds its value better due to its sporty appeal.

2006 Honda Civic Cost of Ownership

The 2006 Honda Civic is generally considered economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low. Fuel economy is excellent, reducing running costs. Maintenance is relatively affordable, but potential engine block repairs can be expensive. Regular maintenance, like oil changes and brake services, are reasonably priced. Long-term ownership costs can be higher if major repairs, such as engine replacement, become necessary. However, if properly maintained and without major issues, it remains a cost-effective vehicle.

How Does the 2006 Honda Civic Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2006 Honda Civic's key rivals included the Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, and Nissan Sentra. In terms of reliability, the Civic and Corolla were generally considered top choices. The Mazda3 offered a sportier driving experience but potentially lower long-term reliability. The Sentra provided more interior space but lacked the Civic's fuel efficiency.
Regarding features, the Civic offered a decent balance, though the Mazda3 was known for its stylish interior. Performance-wise, the Civic Si stood out against standard trims of its rivals. Price-wise, the Civic was competitive, though Corollas of similar age and condition often commanded slightly higher prices due to their reputation.
Alternatives to the 2006 Civic include the Toyota Corolla (for ultimate reliability) and the Mazda3 (for a more engaging driving experience). The Hyundai Elantra from the same era also represents a good value option. If reliability is paramount, the Corolla is a similar or better alternative. If driving dynamics are a priority, the Mazda3 is worth considering.

Final Verdict: Is the 2006 Honda Civic a Good Sedan?

The 2006 Honda Civic is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a reliable and fuel-efficient commuter car. It's a good choice for students, first-time car owners, or anyone prioritizing practicality. Whether it's worth buying depends heavily on its condition and price.
Given its age, buying used is the only option. A pre-purchase inspection is essential, focusing on the engine block issue and overall mechanical condition. The LX or EX trims offer a good balance of features and value. Avoid models with known engine problems or extensive rust. If a clean example is found at a fair price, the 2006 Civic can be a dependable and economical choice.

I bought a NEW 2006 LX civic coupe 1.

I bought a NEW 2006 LX civic coupe 1.8L in 2006 black with a tan interior and it was of course a manual transmission, I owned the car from 2006 until 2013. I drove it as a daily and went on some long road trips and did not have a problem with it at all, but I did do my maintenance every 6,000 miles. also the recall came out for the 06-08 1.8L engines in I believe 2009 and was good until 2019 DEC. Unfortunately, I had to sell in 2013 and I regretted it ever since, so I bought another one (Silver 2008 Civic coupe 179,000 miles manual transmission) in 2019. I still have it and I've driven from Los Banos, California to Phoenix, Arizona several times now and its very comfortable and has been reliable. I have also taken it to Copperas Cove, Texas. So I recommend this car as long as you have gone over it very meticulously from top to bottom. I recommend 2006-2011 Honda Civic Manual Transmission and also 2012-2013 Honda Civic Manual Transmission. Coupe or sedan. MANUAL TRANSMISSION. Have it looked over by a good mechanic and look for service records also.

This is full of recalls.

This is full of recalls. Really bad quality. There was a service bulletin issued in 2017 for engine block extending warranty to 10 yrs from orig purchase date. I bought my 2006 civic when it came out in 2005. The extended warranty was gone by the time they issued the bulletin and I now have no chance of getting it fixed.

Reliable, good gas mileage, great car

I am absolutely heartbroken that I have to give up this gem of a car! I got her for $4200 pre-pandemic. She took me everywhere even a couple 9+ hour drives with no issue and excellent gas mileage. Never had any mechanical issues - just kept on top of maintenance. Had an accident and the damage is unfixable, so I need to give her up. Aesthetically, the paint does tend to chip, but as a person who doesn't care about looks it never bugged me. A smooth running faithful steed until her last days. I strongly recommend this car!

The very best car I've owned to date

I purchased in my 2006 Civic LX in October 2006. I noticed that it was more spacious than I'd remembered my previous Civic or Nissan Sentra. It was peppy (not fast) and got excellent mileage. I drove it an average of 50 miles a day. Other than regular maintenance, it had no repair issues. Sadly, in 2015, it was hit from behind by a motorist moving about 45 mph in a mini-van (we were at a stand still). The car was totaled, but the passengers (my 12 y.o. son and me) were fine. Great car. I have another, newer, Civic now. I'm not as fond of it as I was that 2006. Honestly, I'd buy another one.

I love this car

This car was my baby for 14 years, I love it. Very few issues other than general wear and tear that happens over 14 years. I bought it in 2007 and ir only had about 1500 miles on it, now it has over 270,000 but still ran great. Sadly, my baby was totaled in accident a couple weeks ago and I would do anything to get it back. I love this car so much.

Best car I've ever owned

This car was my bud for 11 years. Im selling her because I want a ll wheel drive but I'm not going to lie I have tears to give her up. She hs been incredibly dependable, amazing gas mileage, she has rallied through the snow (I live in Mammoth Lakes, Ca). I've replaced the basics throughout the years and have been so with the $8,700 I spent when it had 74,000 miles. It now have 255,000 miles and won't quit. I just put up for sale and have 5 buyers in line in hour. Im sad to give her away.

06 civic lx

The car had been in a head on crashed & was over priced. Nothing had been fixed nor replaced. The car ran & I guess that was enough for the dealer to charge me what he did.
