The Good
The 2002 Honda Civic boasted impressive reliability and fuel efficiency, appealing to practical buyers. Its comfortable ride and simple, functional design made it easy to live with. While not a performance car (except for the Si), its responsive engine provided adequate power for everyday driving. The strong resale value provided peace of mind.
The Bad
Potential weaknesses of the 2002 Honda Civic include potential for rust, especially in regions with salted roads. Some owners reported issues with the automatic transmission. The interior, while functional, can feel basic and dated. Check for oil leaks and ensure regular maintenance has been performed.

What Problems Does the 2002 Honda Civic Have?
Several recalls affected the 2002 Civic, including issues with the fuel tank and airbags. Always check the VIN with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) to verify if all applicable recalls have been addressed. Long-term reliability concerns primarily revolve around the engine block cracking and transmission issues. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and transmission fluid flushes, can help mitigate some of these risks, but these problems can still occur even with diligent care.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Safety features included standard front airbags. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were optional on some trims. Side airbags were also available as an option. In terms of crash-test ratings, the 2002 Honda Civic performed reasonably well for its time. The NHTSA gave it mostly 4- and 5-star ratings in frontal and side-impact crash tests. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave it a "Good" rating in the moderate overlap front test. Keep in mind that safety standards have advanced significantly since 2002, so a modern vehicle will generally offer better protection in a crash. Overall, the 2002 Civic focused on basic safety and functionality over advanced technology and entertainment.

How Does the 2002 Honda Civic Compare to Other Coupe?
Compared to the Corolla, the Civic offered similar reliability and fuel efficiency, but some drivers preferred the Corolla's slightly more comfortable ride. The Sentra was typically less expensive but didn't quite match the Civic's reliability. The Focus, while offering more style, had a less stellar reliability record. In terms of performance, the Civic Si was a standout, providing a sportier experience than most competitors in this class. If reliability is the top priority, the Toyota Corolla is a similar alternative. If a more engaging driving experience is desired, the Mazda Protege/Mazda3 could be considered. However, for a balance of reliability, fuel efficiency, and affordability, the 2002 Honda Civic remains a strong contender.

Final Verdict: Is the 2002 Honda Civic a Good Coupe?

Drove an hour to look at this car because the guy IDrove an hour to look at this car because the guy I talked to said there was nothing wrong with the car. Didn't even get it off the lot before I realized I'd been scammed once again by a Kia dealership. Power steering pump is going out on that car so when I tried to get him to come down on the price he comes back with after everything title tax was going to be 3900. Unbelievable Kia dealerships are low man they look out fr themselves and do not value customers at all.

Epitome of the Honda ReputationHonestly, for as cheap as you can get them, the value you get is amazing. I make consistent 300mi commutes on weekends (600 total) and this car has given me 0 issues. I make it each way with a 1/4 tank of gas left, insane gas mileage for a 21 year old car. Original owner took good car of it, owner they sold it to tried to run it into the ground, I fixed the issues they gave it. 170k original miles and still going strong, any problems are cheap to fix (SO easy to fix yourself). Excellent for modding (if that's your thing), perfect for learning to work on cars (cheap parts, easy access), and a stellar beater. Still gets as good if not better mpg than modern cars. Only gripes are as follows: Steering wheel doesn't come forward, so if you're a taller person it's gonna be a little less than ideal comfort. Road noise is a bit loud, especially for highways, but then again.. that's what the volume knob on the stereo is for. Though I eventually will purchase something more modern, I find the idea of letting go of my 02 very hard to comprehend.

Good Reliable car with Great gas mileageBought this Car Used in 2019 as a daily commuter car. Needed a backup to my project car. In the beginning had a few problems due to the original owner not taking care of this car. Once I fixed all the problems this car been very reliable and has great gas mileage. For a car that is 20 years old I'm amazed that this car can get 30 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the Highway. Interior is nothing spectacular, pretty much basic and the exterior is also very conservative. The LX Coupe with 1.7 liter mated with the 4 speed automatic is adequate, if you looking for something that's fun get the EX or Si with VTech and manual transmision.

The best line of commuter/economy cars. Ever.I work in the industry and while I have been behind the wheel of most cars under $75k and produced within the last decade, I have owned nothing but Japanese vehicles. This 2002 Civic EX coupe is about as good of a commuter as one could ever hope for while still maintaining a couple cool points. Throw on a cold air intake and exhaust system, and you can have better mpg and more cool points. Well, at least back when I was in school and this new body style was just coming out in the 2001's... Oh, and get the ones with the anti theft system aka manual transmission

Best choice I've made buying this Hondathe Honda Civic is reliable, affordable, and comfortable. I've had minor hiccups that were an easy fix, so easy I could repair the car myself if needed. I would recommend this car to everyone especially new drivers. You can't go wrong with this vehicle. The only way it'll mess up is if you don't take care of it. That being said, this is an amazing car.

Nice performing vehicle thus farOnly had it a month but . . . nice performing vehicle thus far! This vehicle was originally garage kept. Therefore, the exterior was exceptional for a vehicle that is 18 years old. No visible rust! Very satisfied as it fulfills my required needs.
