Rating: 4.56
Based on 79 Owner Reviews β–Ά
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2016 Jeep Wrangler is an iconic, go-anywhere SUV with roots tracing back to World War II. Available in two-door (Wrangler) and four-door (Wrangler Unlimited) body styles, it's part of the JK generation (2007-2018). Key trims include Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon. New pricing ranged from approximately $23,000 to $40,000, depending on configuration. Its removable top and doors, combined with exceptional off-road capability, make it highly desirable.
The Good

The 2016 Jeep Wrangler offers unmatched off-road performance and a distinctive, customizable design, appealing to adventurous buyers. It's relatively reliable and retains its value well. The comfortable interior (especially in higher trims) and strong resale value make it a practical choice, while its open-air driving experience provides an emotional draw.

The Bad

The 2016 Jeep Wrangler's weaknesses include subpar fuel economy and on-road handling compared to other SUVs. Wind and road noise can be excessive. Some owners report issues with the cooling system and occasional electrical glitches. The soft top can leak, and the ride can be stiff. Rust can be a concern in areas with road salt.

What Problems Does the 2016 Jeep Wrangler Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2016 Jeep Wrangler include cooling system issues such as radiator leaks and overheating, particularly in hot climates. Some owners have reported electrical issues, including problems with the power windows, door locks, and the vehicle's computer system. There have been reports of premature wear of the clutch in manual transmission models. The Pentastar V6 engine, while generally reliable, can experience oil cooler leaks.
Recalls for the 2016 Wrangler have included issues related to airbags and seat belt pretensioners, so checking the vehicle's VIN for outstanding recalls is crucial.
Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around rust, especially in areas where road salt is used. The soft top can be prone to wear and tear, leading to leaks. Some owners report issues with the Uconnect infotainment system. Overall, while the Wrangler is known for its ruggedness, preventative maintenance and addressing minor issues promptly are essential for long-term reliability. Regular inspection of the cooling system, electrical components, and undercarriage is recommended.

How long will the 2016 Jeep Wrangler last?

With proper maintenance, a 2016 Jeep Wrangler can easily reach 200,000 miles or more and provide over 10 years of service. Regular oil changes, fluid checks, and addressing issues promptly are crucial. Long-term durability is generally good, but weaknesses include potential rust (especially in colder climates), wear and tear on the soft top, and potential issues with the cooling and electrical systems as the vehicle ages. Proper undercarriage washing and rustproofing can significantly extend its lifespan. Transmission service is also key.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Jeep Wrangler offers basic built-in tech, primarily focused on entertainment. Standard features include an audio system with an available CD player, USB port, and auxiliary input. Higher trims offer a 6.5-inch touchscreen Uconnect infotainment system with navigation as an option. Bluetooth connectivity is available for hands-free calling and audio streaming.
Driver-assistance features are minimal, with standard features including electronic stability control and hill start assist. A rearview camera was available as an option.
Safety features include standard front airbags, side airbags (optional), and anti-lock brakes. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA are mixed, with 3 stars for frontal crash and 4 stars for rollover. The IIHS did not fully evaluate the 2016 Wrangler. Optional features include remote keyless entry and automatic headlights. The focus is more on off-road capability than advanced safety tech. Compared to modern vehicles, its technology is quite dated.

2016 Jeep Wrangler Prices and Market Value

The 2016 Jeep Wrangler had a starting MSRP around $23,000, with higher trims reaching up to $40,000 when new. Current used market prices range from approximately $18,000 to $35,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. Wranglers hold their value exceptionally well due to their strong demand and iconic status. Factors affecting resale value include condition, mileage, trim level (Rubicon models fetch a premium), and any aftermarket modifications. Low mileage examples and well-maintained vehicles command higher prices. The Wrangler's high resale value makes it a relatively sound investment.

2016 Jeep Wrangler Cost of Ownership

The 2016 Jeep Wrangler is generally considered moderately costly to own. Insurance costs can be moderate to high depending on the driver's history. Fuel economy is poor, increasing fuel costs. Maintenance costs are average, but repairs can be expensive due to the Wrangler's unique components and potential for off-road damage. Long-term reliability is decent if properly maintained, but potential issues like rust and cooling system problems can add to ownership costs. While not the most economical, the Wrangler's strong resale value partially offsets these expenses.

2016 Jeep Wrangler Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 Jeep Wrangler is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Jeep Wrangler Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2016 Jeep Wrangler's key rivals include the Toyota 4Runner and, to a lesser extent, other mid-size SUVs like the Nissan Frontier or Chevrolet Colorado (especially their off-road-oriented trims). In terms of off-road performance, the Wrangler (especially the Rubicon) surpasses most competitors. The 4Runner comes close. However, on-road performance, ride comfort, and fuel economy are areas where the Wrangler lags behind. The 4Runner offers better reliability and more cargo space. The Wrangler's features are basic compared to modern SUVs; rivals offer more advanced tech and safety features.
The Wrangler's price is competitive, but its limited practicality for daily driving makes alternatives worth considering for some buyers. If off-roading is a priority, the Wrangler is the top choice. If you need a more comfortable and practical daily driver with some off-road capability, the Toyota 4Runner is a better alternative. For a pickup truck alternative with decent off-road chops, consider the Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2016 Jeep Wrangler is ideal for off-road enthusiasts and those seeking a unique, customizable vehicle with an open-air driving experience. It's worth buying if off-road capability is a top priority and you're willing to compromise on-road comfort and fuel economy. A used model offers good value due to strong resale prices, but inspect it carefully for rust and off-road damage. The Rubicon trim is best for serious off-roading, while the Sahara offers a more comfortable daily driving experience. Consider a Wrangler Unlimited for more passenger and cargo space. Ultimately, it's a specialized vehicle best suited for specific needs and preferences.

great with oil leak

Great vehicle. mine is a soft top and the noise was expected Have to be aware of oil leak at the oil cooler. Chrysler uses a plastic material that over time will warp and not seal. The after market ones are aluminum and since you have to remove to of intake, the coils and spark plugs are accessible as well on the drivers side. Other than that it is awesome

In love with my new Jeep Wrangler!

My husband and I recently visited Armory Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram FIAT. We were interested in looking at a 2016 lime green jeep wrangler. We were greeted by a wonderful man named Dave Crist. He was kind and efficient in making our process as painless as possible. We had a set budget and he worked hard to make the payments right for us so we could take our new jeep home. I would highly recommend anyone go to Armory Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram FIAT for a new car if interested. The people there are amazing and very easy to work with. The jeep wrangler is everything I wanted. This 2016 jeep had 9,000 miles on it and was previously owned. We have bumper to bumper insurance for up to 60,000 miles or 6 years, which is amazing. The interior is updated with satellite GPS, fire extinguisher, and it is clean like it is brand new. It drives smooth. It has good gas mileage. The engine is the cleanest engine I have ever seen, and the jeep itself is in immaculate shape. I love that I can remove the doors and top when its nice out. I have absolutely no qualms about purchasing this vehicle. It has been a goal if mine for years now. David Crist made this whole process an enjoyable one. I am extremely happy with my purchase.
