2018 Jeep Wrangler Review: Dependable Used SUV With An Outstanding Four-Wheel Drive System

Rating: 4.67
Based on 70 Owner Reviews
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2018 Jeep Wrangler, part of the JL generation, builds on Jeep's legendary off-road heritage. Available in two-door and four-door (Unlimited) body styles, it's offered in trims like Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon. Pricing ranges roughly from $28,000 to $45,000 depending on the trim and options. Its iconic design, removable top and doors, and exceptional off-road capability make it a perennial favorite for adventure seekers.
The Good

The 2018 Wrangler excels in off-road performance, thanks to its robust 4x4 system. Its iconic design evokes a sense of adventure, appealing emotionally. Practically, it offers good resale value and a surprisingly comfortable ride for an off-road focused vehicle. Reliability can be a concern, but many owners find the trade-off worth it for its unique capabilities.

The Bad

The 2018 Wrangler is known for its mediocre fuel economy and less-than-stellar on-road handling. Wind noise can be significant at highway speeds. Some owners have reported electrical issues and premature wear on certain components. The steering can feel vague, especially compared to modern SUVs.

What Problems Does the 2018 Jeep Wrangler Have?

The 2018 Jeep Wrangler, while popular, has its share of reported problems. Some owners have reported issues with the "death wobble" – a violent shaking of the front end at highway speeds, often attributed to steering or suspension components. Electrical glitches, including issues with the Uconnect infotainment system and various sensors, have also been reported. Premature wear of the brakes and ball joints is another area of concern.
Recalls for the 2018 model year have included issues related to the fuel line, where leaks could increase the risk of fire. Other recalls have addressed concerns with the rearview camera and the transmission. Long-term reliability can be affected by the Wrangler's off-road focus. Components such as the suspension and drivetrain are subjected to more stress than in typical passenger vehicles, leading to potential maintenance needs. While the JL generation (introduced in 2018) addressed some of the earlier JK's issues, potential buyers should still be aware of these common problems and ensure thorough inspection before purchase.

How long will the 2018 Jeep Wrangler last?

With proper maintenance, a 2018 Jeep Wrangler can easily reach 200,000 miles or more, providing over 10 years of service. However, longevity is highly dependent on usage and maintenance. Wranglers frequently used for off-roading require more frequent servicing of suspension, drivetrain, and underbody components. Long-term durability concerns often revolve around rust, especially in regions with harsh winters. Regular cleaning and undercoating can help mitigate this. The soft top, if equipped, may require replacement after several years due to wear and tear from sun and weather exposure. Electrical components can also be a long-term weakness.

Negative Owner Reviews

Overall a disappointing Jeep experience. This vehicle has had numerous recalls, all extremely slow. In addition to the quantity of recalls, the recalls do no fix the issues. Exterior rusting has already begun as well as serious degradation of the soft top. Jeep will not stand behind it and it has 36k miles. I am overall upset with the important keys of this vehicle. The radio is clunky, the seats are uncomfortable and the build is concerning.
RB
Worst Jeep I have owned. This is my 4th. Steering is so loose, I feel it is dangerous. When I got this Rubicon, I was really pleased with it. Then I drove it................ 🙁

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2018 Jeep Wrangler offers a mix of modern tech and traditional simplicity. Standard models feature a basic infotainment system, while higher trims offer the Uconnect system with a touchscreen display, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Navigation is available as an option. Entertainment features include available premium audio systems.
Driver-assistance features are relatively limited compared to other modern vehicles. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, and parking sensors are available on higher trims. The base model lacks many advanced safety features.
Safety features include standard airbags, electronic stability control, and anti-lock brakes. Optional features include a rearview camera. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) vary depending on the model and configuration. It's advisable to check the latest safety ratings for the specific model you're considering. The Wrangler's solid front axle design can impact its performance in certain crash tests, and the removable top and doors can affect overall structural integrity in accidents.

2018 Jeep Wrangler Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2018 Jeep Wrangler ranged from approximately $28,000 to $45,000, depending on the trim and options. Used market prices currently range from around $25,000 to $40,000. Wranglers hold their value remarkably well due to their strong brand reputation, off-road capabilities, and popularity. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, trim level, and any aftermarket modifications. Rubicon models and well-maintained Wranglers generally command higher prices. Despite being several years old, depreciation is relatively slow compared to other vehicles in its class.

2018 Jeep Wrangler Cost of Ownership

The 2018 Jeep Wrangler is generally not considered economical to own. Insurance costs can be moderate to high, depending on the driver's history and coverage. Fuel economy is poor, especially with the V6 engine. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to the Wrangler's off-road focus and potential for component wear. Long-term ownership costs can be significant, particularly if the vehicle is used frequently for off-roading. Regular servicing of the drivetrain and suspension is crucial to avoid costly repairs.

2018 Jeep Wrangler Insurance

Insurance for a 2018 Jeep Wrangler is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2018 Jeep Wrangler Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2018 Jeep Wrangler's key rivals include the Toyota 4Runner, and to some extent, other mid-size SUVs like the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2. In terms of off-road performance, the Wrangler is arguably superior, especially the Rubicon trim. However, the 4Runner offers comparable off-road prowess and a reputation for bulletproof reliability. The Colorado ZR2 provides a more refined ride but sacrifices some off-road capability.
In terms of features, the Wrangler lags behind many modern SUVs in terms of advanced driver-assistance systems. The 4Runner offers a more comfortable and spacious interior, while the ZR2 provides better on-road handling. Reliability is a strength of the 4Runner, while the Wrangler has a mixed track record.
Price-wise, the Wrangler is competitive, but its high resale value can make used models more expensive. Alternatives depend on priorities. If off-road capability is paramount, the Wrangler is a strong choice. If reliability and on-road comfort are more important, the Toyota 4Runner might be a better option. If looking for a truck with off-road capability, then the Chevy Colorado ZR2 can be considered. It depends on what you prioritize.

Final Verdict: Is the 2018 Jeep Wrangler a Good Vehicle?

The 2018 Jeep Wrangler is ideal for those who prioritize off-road capability and open-air driving experience. It's worth buying if you understand its compromises, including fuel economy and on-road handling. A used Wrangler can be a good value, but carefully inspect it for signs of off-road abuse or neglected maintenance. The Rubicon trim is best for serious off-roaders, while the Sahara offers a more comfortable daily driving experience. Consider the 2.0L turbo engine for improved fuel economy. Ultimately, the Wrangler is a niche vehicle that appeals to a specific type of buyer. Ensure it aligns with your lifestyle and driving needs before making a purchase.

Jeep passing jobs have been corroding at welds & hinges

Jeep passing jobs have been corroding at welds & hinges due to 2 diff. Metals built together. Issue for 15+ years!, recalled opens need to be addressed, my 3 rd wrangler and loved it! Great freedom ride, sport driven, outdoorsy attitude, love Jeep Wrangler the makers need to fix this cheap paint job causing our jeeps to rust prematurely!

No. No. No.

Danger in electronics

We believe is the PCM. The lights on dash come on unexpectedly. Turns off power steering and windshield wipers turn on while driving. Showing all kinds of sensors. We are not sure what's going on. For it to shut down, steering and puts transmission in limp mode while driving is dangerous. It almost killed us. Then it clears up and it's fine one day and then the next day it does it again.

Versatile Vehicle

I am new to Wrangler and have not had it long enough to speak to the overall reliability. However, it has been every bit of what I had expected. I am glad I got the JL as it has many preferred features over the JK. I am keeping mine stock but a buyer can do anything they like to modify their Jeep. It is a true do what you like vehicle, very versatile. Enjoy.

It's a Jeep

Not bad, it's a Jeep. Quality is NOT what it used to be, but I do not regret getting the 2.0L with the eTorque mild hybrid system. great 8-speed transmission, though. I only wish Stellantis didn't make me an orphan as there's no way to get this drivetrain, anymore. Suspension is light years better than any previous generation; CJ, YJ, TJ, JK.

Replace Cylinder Head at 60k miles

I bought my jeep used at 20k miles. My check engine light came on at 60,800k. I took it to the dealership and the diagnosis is that the Cylinder Head needs to be replaced which is an estimated $4000 to repair. Chrysler Jeep would not help at all or back their product. The engine is a poor design for it to fail at 60k miles. I was only 800 miles out of the service agreement. They claim to have exceptional service and their product fails at 60k miles there is a defect in their design. This is a known issue that should be addressed. I have spoke to other jeep owners that have had to replace the same part. Customer service was not helpful at all.
