The 2004 Toyota 4Runner marked the start of the fourth generation, known for its rugged body-on-frame construction. It's a mid-size SUV that offers both off-road capability and on-road comfort. Key trims included the SR5, Sport Edition, and Limited. Its popularity stems from Toyota's reputation for reliability and the 4Runner's ability to tackle challenging terrain. Expect a price range of $6,000 to $15,000+ depending on condition and mileage.
The Good

The 2004 4Runner boasts impressive off-road performance and legendary Toyota reliability, appealing to practical buyers. Its comfortable ride and classic SUV design offer an emotional connection. While not the most fuel-efficient, its overall value proposition is strong due to its longevity and retained resale value.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2004 4Runner include rust, particularly in areas with road salt. Watch out for potential issues with the X-REAS suspension system (if equipped), and check the condition of the lower ball joints as they are a known failure point. Fuel economy can also be a drawback for some.

What Problems Does the 2004 Toyota 4Runner Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2004 Toyota 4Runner include rust, particularly in the frame. This is especially prevalent in regions with heavy road salt use. Inspect the frame thoroughly before purchasing. Another common issue is with the lower ball joints, which can fail and cause significant damage. These should be inspected regularly and replaced as needed.

The X-REAS (Cross Linked Relative Absorber System) suspension, found on the Sport Edition, is prone to leaking and expensive repairs. Many owners opt to replace it with a standard suspension setup when it fails.

Other potential issues include:
  • Cracked dashboards
  • Failing oxygen sensors
  • Leaking valve cover gaskets

Recall history for the 2004 4Runner should be checked on the NHTSA website, as recalls can vary. Long-term reliability is generally excellent, but addressing these potential issues proactively is crucial for extending the vehicle's lifespan. Regular maintenance, especially regarding rust prevention, is vital.

How long will the 2004 Toyota 4Runner last?

With proper maintenance, a 2004 Toyota 4Runner can easily reach 250,000 to 300,000 miles or more. Years of service can extend well beyond 20 years. Owner data suggests that regular oil changes, fluid flushes, and addressing minor issues promptly are key to longevity. Long-term durability is a strong point, but rust remains the primary concern, especially in colder climates. Suspension components, particularly the X-REAS system, may require attention over time. The engines and transmissions are generally very reliable, but proper care is essential.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2004 Toyota 4Runner's tech, entertainment, and safety features are relatively basic compared to modern vehicles. Standard features include an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims may offer a JBL premium sound system. There are no advanced driver-assistance systems like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking.

Safety features include:
  • Anti-lock brakes (ABS)
  • Vehicle Stability Control (VSC)
  • Traction Control (TRAC)
  • Front airbags
  • Side curtain airbags (optional)

Optional features include:
  • Sunroof
  • Leather seats
  • Heated front seats
  • Automatic climate control

Driver-assistance features are limited to cruise control. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) crash-test ratings for the 2004 4Runner are generally good, earning "Good" ratings in several categories. However, it's important to note that safety standards have evolved significantly since 2004. Keep this in mind when comparing it to newer vehicles. While basic by today's standards, the 2004 4Runner provided a solid safety foundation for its time.

2004 Toyota 4Runner Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2004 Toyota 4Runner ranged from approximately $27,000 to $38,000 depending on the trim and options. Currently, used market prices typically range from $6,000 to $15,000+, with exceptional examples potentially fetching more. The 4Runner holds its value exceptionally well due to Toyota's reputation for reliability and its strong off-road capabilities. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition (especially rust), maintenance history, and trim level. Limited trims and those with 4WD generally command higher prices. Depreciation is slow compared to other SUVs in its class.

2004 Toyota 4Runner Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2004 Toyota 4Runner are generally moderate, but can vary based on driving record and location. Fuel economy is not a strong point, contributing to higher running costs. Maintenance is generally affordable due to Toyota's reliability. Repairs can be more costly if the X-REAS suspension needs replacement or if rust repair is required. Long-term ownership costs are moderate overall, leaning towards economical if well-maintained, thanks to its durability. Neglecting maintenance can lead to higher expenses.

2004 Toyota 4Runner Insurance

Insurance for a 2004 Toyota 4Runner is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2004 Toyota 4Runner Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2004 Toyota 4Runner competes with vehicles like the Nissan Xterra, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Ford Explorer. In terms of reliability, the 4Runner generally surpasses the Explorer and is comparable to the Xterra. The Grand Cherokee offers similar off-road prowess but can be less reliable depending on the model year. Feature-wise, the 4Runner might lack some of the modern amenities found in newer competitors but offers a simpler, more robust design.

Performance is comparable across the board, with the V8 4Runner offering a slight edge in towing capacity. Price-wise, used 4Runners tend to hold their value better than the Explorer or Grand Cherokee.

Alternatives: If reliability is paramount, a well-maintained 2004 Lexus GX 470 (based on the 4Runner) offers similar capabilities with more luxury. If you need more cargo space, a newer generation of Explorer might be a better choice, but be prepared for potentially higher maintenance costs as they age. For dedicated off-road enthusiasts, the Jeep Grand Cherokee with the right trim and options provides comparable capabilities, albeit with a potentially higher risk of repairs.

The 2004 Toyota 4Runner is an excellent choice for those seeking a reliable and capable SUV, especially for off-road adventures. It's ideal for buyers who prioritize durability and longevity over the latest technology. It's worth buying used, but a thorough inspection for rust and maintenance history is crucial. The SR5 trim offers a good balance of features and affordability, while the Limited provides more luxury. Avoid the Sport Edition if you're concerned about the X-REAS suspension. Ensure all recalls have been addressed before purchasing. A well-maintained 2004 4Runner can provide many years of reliable service.

this was the most reliable car I owned

I had this Toyota for 16 years, it was great for everything, I had the 3rd row of seats, had for my kids when they were little. Great reliable car, I drove it until 185,000 miles and never had an issue with it. I traded it in they gave me way more than I thought for the Toyota. They really hold thier value.

Top reliable truck.

This truck is a combination of RELIABILITY and POWER. This is a rare truck to own mostly because it was made in JAPAN. If you're considering buying this car there's no need for me to explain what made in JAPAN means. Good luck.

This vehicle is by far the best suv I have ever owned. Brought brand new and never had any trouble. Still run like a charm. I retired and moved to Florida and traveled back and fourth to NC often but it never showed any stress and still fire up every time. Simply the best vehicle I have ever owned. Worth every dollar. 234, 000 miles and still going strong.

Best Driving Experience!

This amazing 4Runner V8 SUV has exceeded my Toyota expectations far and beyond! It has provided the most valuable, complete driving experience since day one, and the only maintenance and care was managed by Motorcars Toyota in Cleveland Heights, Ohio (Cleveland), with the exception of tire service, courtesy of Goodyear/Conradโ€™s. Itโ€™s still extremely fast and runs smooth - if I can keep it 50 years, I would, and I will truly miss it!!
