Rating: 4.59
Based on 66 Owner Reviews
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2011 Toyota 4Runner is a mid-size SUV with a rugged body-on-frame design, tracing its roots back to the original 4Runner introduced in 1984. The fifth generation, which includes the 2011 model year, started in 2009. Key trims include the SR5, Trail, and Limited. Pricing ranged from approximately $30,000 to $40,000 when new. Its off-road capability and Toyota's reputation for reliability are major factors in its enduring popularity.
The Good

The 2011 4Runner offers robust off-road performance and Toyota's legendary reliability, appealing to practical buyers. Its truck-like design and comfortable interior provide a sense of adventure and security, emotionally satisfying those seeking a capable and dependable SUV. It holds its value well, making it a solid long-term investment.

The Bad

The 2011 4Runner's weaknesses include relatively poor fuel economy compared to car-based SUVs. The handling can feel truck-like and less refined on paved roads. Potential buyers should inspect for rust, especially underneath, and check the functionality of off-road features like the 4WD system.

What Problems Does the 2011 Toyota 4Runner Have?

The 2011 Toyota 4Runner is generally considered reliable, but some frequently reported problems include:

  • Rust: Frame rust can be a concern, especially in areas with heavy road salt usage. Thorough inspection is crucial.
  • Water Leaks: Some owners have reported water leaks, particularly around the windshield or sunroof.
  • Electronic Issues: Occasionally, issues with the audio system or other electronic components have been reported.
  • Suspension Issues: Some owners have experienced issues with the X-REAS suspension system (Limited trim), which can be expensive to repair.

Recalls for the 2011 4Runner have been relatively limited, but it's essential to check the NHTSA website for any outstanding recalls specific to the VIN. Long-term reliability concerns generally revolve around wear and tear items like brakes, suspension components, and potential for increased oil consumption as the engine ages. Regular maintenance is critical to preventing major issues. Prior model years of the 5th generation (2009-2010) had some reports of increased brake wear. Check service history for timely maintenance.

How long will the 2011 Toyota 4Runner last?

With proper maintenance, a 2011 Toyota 4Runner can easily exceed 200,000 miles and provide 15-20 years of service. Toyota's are known for their longevity. Key to long-term durability is regular oil changes, fluid flushes, and addressing minor issues promptly. Weaknesses that may emerge over time include increased oil consumption, wear on suspension components (especially the X-REAS system), and potential for rust in harsh climates. Preventative maintenance is key to maximizing lifespan and minimizing costly repairs.

Stylish yet built for a safari. Interior design, fit, and finish is excellent. All the modern amenities are at your fingertips. Ride is slightly firmer and view through the dash appears more truck like than previous models. However, upon test drive, that feeling quickly gives way. The 4Runner keeps you in control with responsive acceleration, steering, and braking. My three college boys and spouse all drive 4Runners. This is their favorite. The 4Runner delivers peace-of-mind and makes every ride a safe and fun experience for the whole family.
Jacqueline
I am so excited when the Toyota gets delivered to my house today or tomorrow it drives awesome I’ve always wanted a Toyota forerunner this one exceeds my expectations for the price and the miles I would definitely recommend this to a friend and of course the dealership
Mr Abel
Real nice and comfortable ride this is a classy SUV. No DVD are anything like that no gimmicks just a well engineered SUV it feels extremely well built tight, solid, powerful and a joy to drive. The 4Runners are worth the money and they live up to their fine reputation. Also this is one sexy ride blizzard pearl white is a eye catcher.
Negative Owner Reviews
Appreciate a comfortable ride
My wife and I regret not taking this vehicle for a longer test drive. The 2011 4Runner is a beautiful SUV, with great features and style attraction. Unfortunately, the seats are about as comfortable as a park bench. The front seat backrests are so still it is next to impossible to get comfortable. The seat cushions are so firm, if you take this vehicle on a long trip, you are guaranteed to have a really sore butt when you exit the vehicle. I imagine the intent was to offer strong support in the seats, but this is an SUV, not a sports car.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2011 Toyota 4Runner offers a decent array of tech and safety features for its time.

  • Standard Tech & Entertainment: Includes an eight-speaker audio system with a CD player, auxiliary audio jack, and available satellite radio. Higher trims offer a JBL premium audio system. A navigation system was optional.
  • Driver-Assistance Features: Hill-start assist control and downhill assist control (on 4x4 models).
  • Safety Features: Standard safety equipment includes anti-lock brakes (ABS), stability control, traction control, and front, side, and curtain airbags.
  • Optional Features: Navigation system, sunroof, and Toyota's Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) were optional extras.

Crash Test Ratings: The 2011 Toyota 4Runner received good overall safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave it a four-star overall safety rating. These ratings should be consulted before purchase. Remember that safety technology has advanced significantly since 2011, so compared to modern vehicles, the 4Runner is relatively basic in this area.

2011 Toyota 4Runner Prices and Market Value

The 2011 Toyota 4Runner had a starting MSRP of around $30,000 when new, with higher trims reaching $40,000 or more. Used market prices in 2024 vary significantly based on condition, mileage, and trim level, but expect to pay anywhere from $15,000 to $25,000. The 4Runner depreciates slowly due to its reputation for reliability and strong resale value. Low mileage, excellent condition, and desirable options (like 4WD and the Trail Edition) will command higher prices. Lack of rust is also a critical factor impacting resale value.

2011 Toyota 4Runner Cost of Ownership

The 2011 Toyota 4Runner is not the most economical vehicle to own. Insurance costs are moderate. Fuel economy is poor, contributing to higher running costs. Maintenance is generally affordable due to Toyota's reliability, but repairs can be expensive, especially for the X-REAS suspension. Long-term ownership costs are moderate if preventative maintenance is followed, but neglecting maintenance can lead to substantial repair bills. The 4Runner's longevity helps offset some of these costs.

2011 Toyota 4Runner Insurance

Insurance for a 2011 Toyota 4Runner is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2011 Toyota 4Runner Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2011 Toyota 4Runner competes with vehicles like the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Nissan Xterra, and Dodge Durango. Compared to the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the 4Runner offers superior off-road capability and a stronger reputation for long-term reliability, but the Grand Cherokee has a more refined on-road driving experience and a wider range of engine options. The Nissan Xterra is a similar body-on-frame SUV, but the 4Runner generally has better resale value and a more spacious interior. The Dodge Durango offers more passenger space and a more powerful V8 engine option, but it's less capable off-road.

Alternatives to consider include newer Toyota 4Runners (for improved features and safety) or a used Lexus GX 470 (for more luxury with similar off-road capabilities). For primarily on-road driving, a car-based SUV like the Honda Pilot or Toyota Highlander might be a better choice, offering improved fuel economy and ride comfort, but sacrificing off-road prowess.

Ranks #110 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2011 Toyota 4Runner a Good Wagon?

The 2011 Toyota 4Runner is ideal for buyers seeking a reliable and capable off-road SUV with good resale value. It's a solid choice for those who prioritize durability and dependability over fuel efficiency and on-road refinement. It's worth buying if you find a well-maintained example with no frame rust. Consider the Trail Edition for serious off-roading or the Limited for a more luxurious experience. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended, especially to assess the condition of the suspension and check for rust. Be aware of older tech and safety features compared to newer vehicles.

4 Runners-the best SUV for reliability & tough!

Steve from AZ with 2022 review...dude, you must have gotten one made on Monday or Friday as the saying goes. I'm on my 3rd 4Runner since 1995, and I am looking for another one now. Our oldest son totaled the 95 in 2003 in his senior year of high school, head on collision, and walked away without a scratch. We replaced it with a 2001. I rolled that one 2x in my 1st accident in Oct 2011. I got hit by wildlife and knocked off the other side of the road. I was doing good keeping it steady, but it wasn't slowing down, and I knew not to hit the brakes on the wet grass--I forgot my cruise control was on. So I rolled it 2x and hung upside down in the middle of a swamp until the police found me, but not a scratch on me. We replaced that one with a 1999, and I'm still driving it. It looks like xxxx cosmetically and the leather seats have been destroyed by the 7 rescue dogs that have been part of our family since 2012, but it has only stopped running once. I've had what I would call 2 major repairs on 3 4Runners. The brake booster and master cylinder last year on this 99, and some type of sensor down below the belt that caused a major oil leak and then it wouldn't start this past spring. The part was only $25, but I paid my mechanic neighbor $200 to do the repair instead of $800 for labor elsewhere. And it was already 23 years old and had 225,000 & 230,000 miles on it before those 2 things happened. And just FYI from an old lady, NEVER take a vehicle to a dealership to be repaired! I'm probably a bit older than you so I learned that lesson decades ago. Find a good independent mechanic and treat them like you do your Mama because they are an important person in this life. I'm sorry you had a bad experience with yours, but I have loved every single one of mine, and the thought of driving something else literally hurts my feelings. Hope you are blessed in whatever you drive now!

Over priced repairs,useless Toyota warranty.

Bought my 2011 limited used with 84k on it. Beautiful suv. Got talked into Toyotas factory warranty for 3 year 36k miles. Was told it covered everything like it was a brand new vehicle. Then first oil change struts and shocks were leaking. Guess what. NOT COVERED. HAD THE XREAS SYSTEM. Dealer wanted 5k for the front and another 3k for the rear. Then the belt tensioners went. Guess what. NOT COVERED. Trans hesitates 5 seconds or so shifting into drive from time to time. Dealer says there is nothing wrong with it. I’ll bet after the warranty expires they will find the problem. All in all nice suv but be prepared for some pretty pricy repairs. Don’t waste the 3k on a warranty since nothing seems to be covered. I thought Toyota built a better vehicle. Had less problems with my Chevy and dodge which were cheaper to fix. Every oil change they manage to find 3-5 k of repairs needing to be done. Funny since I bought it with 84k as a certified pre owned and it now has 94k after 2 years of owning it

Loved almost everything about it

I felt very safe, it is comfortable, smooth ride and very dependable. No issues whatsoever. The design however... on the outside there are too many raised areas where it is hard to keep clean. On the inside there are too many areas with low points that are hard to keep clean, especially around the console.

Stylish yet built for a safari!

Best SUV Period

I’ve owned a Chevrolet ‘84 S-10 Blazer, ‘04 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and the Toyota 4-Runner. I purchased my 4Runner new in Jan 2012 after my 2004 Jeep started to fall apart. The 4Runner has the most comfortable front seats, good fuel economy with great power from 4 liter V6, and unbeatable reliability. Not a single repair needed in 7.5 years and it still looks new!
