Rating: 4.44
Based on 49 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2010 Toyota 4Runner is part of the fifth generation (2010-2024), a rugged and capable mid-size SUV known for its off-road prowess and reliability. It features a body-on-frame construction, setting it apart from many car-based SUVs. Key trims include SR5, Trail, and Limited. New, the pricing ranged approximately from $30,000 to $40,000. Its reputation for durability and off-road capability makes it a popular choice for adventurers and those needing a dependable vehicle.
The Good

The 2010 4Runner offers excellent off-road performance and legendary Toyota reliability. Its rugged design appeals to emotional buyers seeking adventure, while practical buyers appreciate its dependability and resale value. Comfort is decent for an SUV of its type, and though not the most efficient, it provides good overall value given its capabilities. Performance is adequate for on and off road use.

The Bad

The 2010 4Runner's weaknesses include relatively poor fuel economy compared to newer SUVs, a somewhat dated interior design, and handling that isn't as refined as some competitors on paved roads. Watch out for rust, particularly in areas with road salt. Some owners have reported issues with the electronic stability control system.

What Problems Does the 2010 Toyota 4Runner Have?

The 2010 Toyota 4Runner is generally considered reliable, but some frequently reported problems and long-term reliability concerns include:

  • Rust: Rust can be an issue, particularly in regions where road salt is used. Check the frame, undercarriage, and body panels for signs of corrosion.

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC): Some owners have reported issues with the ESC system, including warning lights and potential malfunctions. This can sometimes be attributed to sensor issues or software glitches.

  • Water Pump Leaks: Although not extremely common, water pump leaks can occur over time, leading to overheating if not addressed.

  • Oxygen Sensors: Oxygen sensors can fail, leading to reduced fuel economy and potential emissions issues.

  • Recalls: It's important to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls on the NHTSA website. Recalls can address various safety-related issues.

  • Long-Term Reliability: Overall, the 4Runner is known for its long-term durability. However, like any vehicle, regular maintenance is crucial. Neglecting maintenance can lead to premature wear and tear on components such as brakes, suspension, and drivetrain.

  • Model Year Specifics: While not widespread, some owners have reported minor issues specific to the 2010 model year related to the infotainment system, although these are typically not major concerns.

How long will the 2010 Toyota 4Runner last?

With proper maintenance, a 2010 Toyota 4Runner can easily exceed 200,000 miles and provide 15-20 years of service. Many owners report reaching 300,000 miles or more. Long-term durability is a key strength. However, weaknesses over time include potential rust issues, especially in colder climates, and normal wear and tear on suspension components, bushings, and rubber seals. Regular fluid changes (oil, transmission, coolant) are crucial to maximize its lifespan. Addressing minor issues promptly can prevent them from becoming major problems.
Positive Owner Reviews
Wishing it was a truck
The BEST SUV Transportation vehicle that I have ever had, typical Toyota quality with the typical maintenance costs. BEWARE the TRD Edition of when a strut goes bad....THOUSANDS OF $$$ TO REPAIR, NOT JUST REPLACE A STRUT !!!!..HOWEVER, MY MISTAKE, I purchased this to replace a Chevy Tahoe that pulls a trailer....this IS NOT a replacement for such. It is a 6 cylinder SUV for a family NOT A WORK TRUCK.
Sarahc123
I love the safety I feel when driving this car. It’s solid, safe, and stylish. The three s’s that were important to me!! I have never driven a truck before and now will probably never go back to a regular mid size vehicle.
Maria
Love this car more than any I have ever owned. It’s a 2010 and still looks and drives like new! I’m currently in the market for a new 4 runner but I’m not selling I’m going to let my son have my current one! Best car/ SUV ever I love it
Negative Owner Reviews
p
Marginal at best, was expecting a bit more in terms of quality workmanship and features (example: poor functioning bluetooth mic dealer says is fine). I hope it fires up for many miles as Toys typically do but for more than that spend your money elsewhwere. Positives - reasonably quiet and smooth, wiper heater, roomier than last version, decent performance in snow. Negatives - poor highway acceleration, not a very comfortable driver position, exposed antenna?, bluetooth mic is almost non functional while driving, marginal rear wiper, no memory seats, only one option for tires on 20" wheels, no running boards....

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2010 Toyota 4Runner features a mix of standard and optional tech and safety features, which were adequate for its time but now feel somewhat dated compared to modern vehicles.

  • Built-in Tech and Entertainment:
    • Standard features typically included a CD player, AM/FM radio, and auxiliary input.
    • Higher trims (like the Limited) often featured a premium JBL audio system with a subwoofer.
    • Navigation was an available option, often integrated into a touchscreen display.

  • Driver-Assistance Features:
    • Hill-start assist control and downhill assist control were available, particularly on the Trail Edition, to aid in off-road driving.
    • Rear parking sensors were often available as an option.

  • Safety Features:
    • Standard safety equipment included anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), traction control, and a suite of airbags (front, side, and curtain).

  • Optional Features:
    • Keyless entry and remote start were often available as options.
    • A sunroof was available on some trims.

  • Crash-Test Ratings:
    • The 2010 Toyota 4Runner received generally good crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) at the time of its release. These ratings should be verified on the respective organization's websites for accurate and up-to-date information.

2010 Toyota 4Runner Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2010 Toyota 4Runner ranged from approximately $30,000 to $40,000 depending on the trim and options. As of today's used market, prices vary greatly based on condition, mileage, and location but generally range from $12,000 to $25,000. The 4Runner holds its value exceptionally well due to its reputation for reliability and off-road capability. Factors affecting resale value include maintenance history, accident records, rust presence, and overall condition. Lower mileage examples in excellent condition command premium prices.

2010 Toyota 4Runner Cost of Ownership

The 2010 Toyota 4Runner is moderately costly to own. Insurance costs are typically average for an SUV of its size. Fuel economy is not great, leading to higher fuel expenses. Maintenance is generally affordable due to Toyota's reliability, but repairs can be more expensive if needed. Long-term, its durability helps offset some costs, but it's not the most economical choice due to its fuel consumption.

2010 Toyota 4Runner Insurance

Insurance for a 2010 Toyota 4Runner is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2010 Toyota 4Runner Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2010 Toyota 4Runner's key rivals included the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Nissan Xterra, and Ford Explorer. In terms of off-road performance, the 4Runner and Jeep Grand Cherokee were strong contenders, with the 4Runner often having the edge in ruggedness. The Nissan Xterra offered a more budget-friendly but less refined option. The Ford Explorer leaned towards on-road comfort and family-friendliness.

In terms of reliability, the 4Runner consistently outperforms many rivals, giving it a significant advantage. Feature-wise, it's generally comparable, although some competitors offered more modern technology. Pricing was competitive when new, and used prices reflect the 4Runner's strong resale value.

Alternatives to consider depend on your priorities. If off-road capability is paramount, a Jeep Wrangler could be a better choice, though it sacrifices on-road comfort. For better fuel economy and on-road manners, a newer Jeep Grand Cherokee or a more modern SUV might be preferable. If budget is a major concern, a used Nissan Xterra could be a viable alternative, albeit with some compromises in refinement and features. Overall, the 4Runner shines in reliability and off-road ability, but it's not the best choice for fuel efficiency or modern tech.

Ranks #118 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2010 Toyota 4Runner a Good Wagon?

The 2010 Toyota 4Runner is ideal for those seeking a reliable and capable off-road SUV. It's a worthwhile purchase, especially used, for buyers prioritizing durability and the ability to tackle challenging terrain. Avoid if you need excellent fuel economy or the latest technology. The Trail Edition is great for serious off-roaders, while the Limited offers more comfort. Ensure any used model has been well-maintained, and thoroughly inspect for rust, particularly if it spent time in a region with road salt. Due to depreciation, buying used often makes the most sense.

NOT A TRUCK

The BEST SUV Transportation vehicle that I have ever had, typical Toyota quality with the typical maintenance costs. BEWARE the TRD Edition of when a strut goes bad....THOUSANDS OF $$$ TO REPAIR, NOT JUST REPLACE A STRUT !!!!..HOWEVER, MY MISTAKE, I purchased this to replace a Chevy Tahoe that pulls a trailer....this IS NOT a replacement for such. It is a 6 cylinder SUV for a family NOT A WORK TRUCK.

Waited too long for this car

I love the safety I feel when driving this car. It’s solid, safe, and stylish. The three s’s that were important to me!! I have never driven a truck before and now will probably never go back to a regular mid size vehicle.

i love my 4Runner

I love my 4Runner. There are two small changes I would make in this vehicle. 1 is the side mirrors They are very large. I would like them a bit smaller as to see over them when making turns. The other is the body contouring sometimes looks like a dent in the side. But its just the way it is made. other than that I love it. Gas mileage is unbelievable compared to my Jeep I had prior to this one. it is very comfortable and my granddaughter loves the 3rd seat.

Love this SUV

This is our 4th 4 Runner. It is a dream to drive. Has a lot of power. So much room for us and our 2 Golden Retrievers. Love the power window in back. Awesome sound system. Really don't have anything bad to say.

A gem of a design. A true SUV not a cross-over.

This 2010 limited (5th generation) is the best value for the money. 6,300 pounds of 4WD all the time luxury. Best and safest family car there is. Does it ALL!!.

Style - Comfort -Drives Great - Keeps Value

I had a Toyota Highlander and traded for the 4 Runner which gives me the extra room I wanted for my surf fishing experiences , the rear cargo slide out tray makes it ideal to load my fishing gear very good feature.
