The Good
The 2021 4Runner offers exceptional reliability and off-road performance, appealing to practical buyers. Its rugged design and go-anywhere attitude stir emotions. While not the most efficient, its strong resale value and dependable nature provide long-term value. Comfort is adequate, but not class-leading. It’s a reliable and capable SUV.
The Bad
The 2021 4Runner's weaknesses include poor fuel economy compared to modern SUVs. Its aging powertrain can feel underpowered and the ride quality isn't as refined as competitors'. The interior design and technology are also dated. Watch out for rust in regions with heavy road salt usage. Its a body-on-frame SUV which can lead to rollovers.

What Problems Does the 2021 Toyota 4Runner Have?
- Fuel Pump Issues: Some 4Runners, including certain 2020 and 2021 models, were subject to recalls for potential fuel pump failures, which could lead to stalling. Check the vehicle's VIN for recall status.
- Brake Actuator Issues: Some owners have reported issues with the brake actuator, although this is less common in the 2021 model year compared to earlier years.
- Rust: Rust, particularly in areas with salted roads, can be a concern. Regularly inspect the undercarriage for rust, especially on older models.
- Infotainment System: The infotainment system, while functional, is often criticized for being dated and slow compared to modern systems.
- Paint Issues: Some owners have noted thin or easily chipped paint.
- Oil Leaks: While not widespread, some V6 engines have been known to develop minor oil leaks over time, typically at higher mileage.
- Air Conditioning: Some owners have complained about weak air conditioning, especially in hot climates.
Overall, the 4Runner is considered a reliable vehicle, but it's essential to stay on top of maintenance and address any issues promptly to ensure long-term dependability. Checking for any outstanding recalls is always recommended.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features are part of the Toyota Safety Sense suite and include pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are available on higher trims.
Safety features include eight airbags, anti-lock brakes, and stability control. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave the 2021 4Runner a 4-star overall safety rating. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings vary, and it's recommended to check their website for the most up-to-date crash-test results. While the 4Runner has many safety features, the dated design does impact some safety ratings compared to newer vehicles. A rearview camera is standard. The system isn't as technologically advanced as many competitors.

How Does the 2021 Toyota 4Runner Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?
In terms of price, the 4Runner is generally competitive. However, the Bronco can offer similar features at a lower price point depending on the configuration. The Frontier is a less expensive option but doesn't offer the same level of refinement or features as the 4Runner.
Alternatives include the Jeep Wrangler for extreme off-roading or the Honda Passport for a more comfortable and fuel-efficient SUV experience. If reliability and off-road capability are paramount, the 4Runner remains a strong contender, despite its dated features. If modern features and on-road comfort are a priority, the Grand Cherokee or Bronco might be better choices. The Toyota Tacoma is a good alternative if you're looking for a similar platform.

First Toyota after 4 f150’s and a RamOne of the last SUV’s with a real 4x4 and towing capacity. The engine and transmission lasts longer than anything similar. Not the greatest mpg but this is greatly off set by reliability and longevity.

Amazing Off Road VehicleMy only complaint about this vehicle is the two tone interior. I feel like the color should be consistent. Other than that, this SUV is the total package

The perfect combination of traditional and modern!I’ve wanted a 4Runner for a while. With the 2020-21 updates it has as much modern tech to be current (safety sense/LED Headlamps/Modern infotainment with Apple Car Play) while still having the reliable V-6 and 5 speed Automatic. I love that it’s a body on frame traditional SUV with a normally aspirated engine and reliable transmission. I’m so glad Toyota still has this generation still in production! There’s a reason these still sell so well!

Reliability will be seen in time .we upgraded in to the next size class of vehicle. was surprised that a 4x4 can actually give you a comfortable ride. the 2 dogs might not be happy now that they went from the backseat to the rear compartment, where they have more room.
