The Good
The 2022 4Runner boasts exceptional reliability and off-road performance, appealing to practical buyers. Its rugged design and proven track record create an emotional connection for adventure seekers. While not the most efficient, its strong resale value and comfortable (depending on trim) cabin add to its appeal. It is a capable and dependable SUV.
The Bad
The 2022 4Runner's weaknesses include poor fuel economy compared to modern SUVs. Its outdated technology and infotainment system can feel behind the times. The ride quality can be rough, especially on non-TRD models, and handling is not as refined as car-based SUVs. Watch out for rust in colder climates, given its body-on-frame construction.

What Problems Does the 2022 Toyota 4Runner Have?
Reports of rust, particularly in areas with road salt, are a concern for long-term owners, especially given the body-on-frame construction. Inspecting the frame regularly and applying rustproofing can mitigate this issue. Earlier model years of the fifth generation (2009-2013) had some reports of potential oil cooler line failures, so ensuring proper maintenance and inspection are important for older models.
Regarding recalls, it's essential to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any active recalls specific to the 2022 model year. While the 4Runner is typically reliable, recalls can address potential safety issues that may arise. Overall, the 2022 4Runner holds a strong reputation for dependability, but addressing these potential issues proactively can contribute to a positive ownership experience.
How long will the 2022 Toyota 4Runner last?
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Regarding driver-assistance and safety features, the 2022 4Runner includes Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) as standard. This suite comprises a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, automatic high beams, and dynamic radar cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available on higher trims.
Optional features vary by trim level and can include a sunroof, keyless entry with push-button start, and a power-adjustable passenger seat.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) should be consulted for the 2022 model year. Keep in mind that the 4Runner's crash test performance has been a point of criticism in the past, as it hasn't always performed as well as newer SUVs in certain tests. Check official sources for the most accurate and up-to-date safety ratings.

How Does the 2022 Toyota 4Runner Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?
Regarding price, the 4Runner generally falls in the middle of the pack. In terms of features, the 4Runner lags behind with its outdated technology.
Alternatives to consider:
- Jeep Grand Cherokee: For more on-road comfort and modern features.
- Ford Bronco: For a similar off-road experience with a modern design.
- Toyota Highlander: If off-roading is not a priority, the Highlander provides a more comfortable and efficient family SUV from the same brand.

I’ve owned a 2022 Toyota 4Runner sr5 for around 2 yearsI’ve owned a 2022 Toyota 4Runner sr5 for around 2 years now and the whole time I’ve put that thing through basically xxxx, and it has never ever broken, or had anything wrong with it, it may not be considered a truck to some but it sure has driven better than any truck I’ve ever driven, the 4Runner is a beast

Simple, durable, rugged! Not the most technologically advanced but that is what I was looking for, keep it simple! The features it has are the important ones, at least to me. This is my third one since 2011 and I love not having to bringing them in for repairs.

Last of an eraAmazing build quality…you can feel it in everything. The last of its kind. Buy one while they’re still around. Don’t buy if you’re concerned about fuel mileage. Trade off is drive it easily 20 yrs without replacing hybrid battery packs and CVT transmissions. Old school bulletproof reliability and quality.

Steer clear of the 22 4runnerThis may be strange to give high marks yet not recommend the 4 runner. I purchased the car the months ago and have had a steering wheel shake from the day I purchased. Toyota has replaced the originals tires but the steering wheel shake continues and there is nothing more than can think to cure the situation. The car has 1100 miles and I will go too arbitration to either Paul been for the card or give me a new car without the shaking. Luckily I live in Texas and we have a strong lemon law in our state. The other 4 runner had 3 of the 4 tires replaced. I should state that I bought 2 4runners...SR5 premium and TRD sport with the x-reas suspension. The TRD is the one with the steering wheel issue. The tires have been balanced 4 times on the original Bridgestone and 3 times on the Michelin Defenders ...oh and 2 wheel alignments. The tires have been balanced at the Toyota dealer.. Discount Tire... And another tire shop
