2016 Toyota 4Runner Review: Old School Off-Road Oriented Midsize SUV With No Mechanical Problems

Rating: 4.66
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2016 Toyota 4Runner is a rugged, body-on-frame SUV with roots tracing back to the mid-1980s. It's a mid-size SUV known for its off-road prowess and durability. This model year is part of the fifth generation (2009-present). Key trims include SR5, Trail (later TRD Off-Road), Limited, and TRD Pro. New, the 2016 4Runner ranged approximately from $33,000 to $45,000. Its popularity stems from its reliability, off-road capability, and truck-like construction.
The Good

The 2016 4Runner offers robust off-road performance and legendary Toyota reliability, appealing to practical buyers. Its rugged design and capable 4x4 system provide an emotional connection for adventure enthusiasts. While not the most fuel-efficient, its durability and strong resale value make it a solid long-term investment. The comfort depends on the trim level chosen.

The Bad

The 2016 4Runner's weaknesses include its dated interior, poor fuel economy compared to modern crossovers, and cumbersome handling on paved roads. The third-row seat in some models is cramped. Be wary of rust, especially in areas with harsh winters. Check for proper maintenance records, particularly concerning transmission fluid changes.

What Problems Does the 2016 Toyota 4Runner Have?

The 2016 Toyota 4Runner generally has strong reliability, but some issues have been reported. Common concerns include:
  • Rust: Underbody rust can be a problem, especially in regions with road salt. Regular inspections and undercoating can help mitigate this.
  • Brake Actuator: Some owners have reported issues with the brake actuator, though this is more prevalent in older models.
  • Entune System: The Entune infotainment system is often criticized for being outdated and slow.
  • Paint Issues: Some owners have reported issues with thin or easily chipped paint.

Recalls for the 2016 4Runner are relatively infrequent but it is crucial to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any active recalls related to your specific vehicle's VIN. Long-term reliability is generally excellent, but regular maintenance, including fluid changes (especially transmission fluid), is essential for maximizing the lifespan of the vehicle. Some owners have reported minor electrical glitches over time, but these are not widespread. Premature wear of suspension components can occur, particularly with heavy off-road use.

How long will the 2016 Toyota 4Runner last?

With proper maintenance, a 2016 Toyota 4Runner can easily reach 200,000 miles or more, potentially lasting 15-20 years. Many owners report exceeding 300,000 miles. Consistent oil changes, timely fluid replacements (transmission, coolant, differentials), and addressing minor repairs promptly are crucial. Long-term durability is a major strength, but potential weaknesses include rust in harsh climates, wear of suspension components with heavy off-road use, and eventual failure of electronic components such as sensors or the infotainment system. Proper storage can extend interior lifespan.
Positive Owner Reviews
John
Great vehicle. Carries all the gear for construction or camping. Added rack for handling lumber. Too easy! Exceptional reliability on and off road. Solid highway truck, smooth and stable. Solid off road, tough and handles 4 wheel areas with ease. Awesome truck!

They will they bent over backwards to help me in any kind of way any question that I asked they was there to answer it for me they just went all out and above to satisfy me
Chillman
I went from a Venza to a 4Runner. Cannot beat the reliability of Toyota’s. Wanted a bigger vehicle with towing capacity. Certainly am not disappointed!
Negative Owner Reviews
4runner Lov
It was a great truck however it was lacking in interior comfort and options. The truck held its value so if your tires of getting ripped off on trading in or resales this is the truck for you.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Toyota 4Runner offers a relatively basic tech package compared to modern vehicles. Standard features include a 6.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity, a rearview camera, and USB port. Higher trims offer features like a premium JBL sound system and navigation. Driver-assistance features are limited; it lacks advanced features like adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, or blind-spot monitoring which are common in newer vehicles.

Safety features include standard antilock brakes, stability control, and multiple airbags. Optional features include parking sensors. The NHTSA gave the 2016 4Runner a four-star overall safety rating. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings vary, but it generally performs well in moderate overlap front and side impact tests. However, the small overlap front test results are typically lower. Specific features vary depending on the trim level. The TRD Pro offers enhanced off-road capabilities but doesn't add to the base safety or technology features beyond suspension upgrades. Overall the tech is considered dated compared to its rivals.

2016 Toyota 4Runner Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2016 Toyota 4Runner ranged from approximately $33,000 to $45,000 depending on the trim and options. As of late 2023, used market prices typically range from $25,000 to $38,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim. The 4Runner holds its value exceptionally well due to its reputation for reliability and off-road capability. Low supply and high demand contribute to its strong resale value. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition (rust-free examples command a premium), trim level (TRD Pro models are particularly sought after), and maintenance history.

2016 Toyota 4Runner Cost of Ownership

The 2016 Toyota 4Runner is generally not the most economical vehicle to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel economy is poor (around 17-22 mpg), increasing running costs. Maintenance is relatively affordable due to Toyota's reliability, but specific repairs can be costly. Long-term ownership costs are influenced by potential rust repair and fuel consumption. Although reliable, when repairs are needed, they can be more costly due to the truck frame and robust construction of the vehicle.

2016 Toyota 4Runner Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 Toyota 4Runner is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Toyota 4Runner Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2016 Toyota 4Runner competes with SUVs like the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Nissan Pathfinder, and Honda Pilot. In terms of off-road performance and reliability, the 4Runner surpasses the Pathfinder and Pilot, but the Grand Cherokee (especially the Trailhawk) offers comparable capability. The 4Runner lags behind in on-road comfort, fuel efficiency, and modern features compared to all three competitors. The Pilot offers more space and better fuel economy for family hauling. The Grand Cherokee provides a more refined driving experience. The Pathfinder is more comfortable on pavement, but less capable off-road.

Alternatives depend on priorities. For pure off-road capability, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is a strong contender. For a more comfortable and fuel-efficient daily driver with occasional off-road use, the Jeep Grand Cherokee or Honda Pilot are better choices. If reliability and resale value are paramount, and off-roading is a significant priority, the 4Runner remains a compelling option. The Ford Explorer is another alternative to consider with various engine options and trim levels. The Toyota Highlander offers better fuel efficiency for on road driving as well.

Ranks #77 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Toyota 4Runner a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2016 Toyota 4Runner is ideal for buyers prioritizing off-road capability, reliability, and strong resale value. It's a great choice for those who regularly venture off the beaten path and don't mind sacrificing fuel economy or modern tech features. It's worth buying used, especially if well-maintained and rust-free. TRD Off-Road or TRD Pro trims are recommended for serious off-road enthusiasts. If on-road comfort and fuel efficiency are more important, other SUVs might be a better fit. Thorough inspection for rust is crucial before purchasing a used 4Runner, particularly in areas with harsh winters. For on road family hauling, consider other SUVs.

After enjoying a bully proof 2001 4Runner limited for

After enjoying a bully proof 2001 4Runner limited for several years, it was time to retire it for a 2016 SR5 Premium. I wisely bought the extended warranty . Things went well for a few years but then I noticed the liftgate was developing blistered paint and rust pinholes. Toyota covered this and dealership re-painted it (I should have insisted liftgate replacement.. more later). Then at 60k miles my steering got very difficult in random parts of a turn, like power steering was varying. Turns out the steering universal was worn and needed replacement for $1k. At about 65 k there was a loud rattle and the muffler heat shield (aluminum) became detached from body and was just laying in the muffler. Same thing happened at about 80k but with the catalytic converter heat shield. In both cases I did not replace as the attachment is just bad design, the steel has galvanic reaction with aluminum and just dissolves at fastener interface. All the while, my liftgate continued to rust from the inside and rattles so loudly with rust particles when I lift it. The rust staining is all over rear bumper. Now at 92k the rear window mechanism in the liftgate face out and window fell down all crooked as I was driving on a cold wet day. So I’m done with this lemon. Not what I expected, Toyota!

The Echols looks good but the AwD limited model was very sluggish and horrible gas mileage. For those that rate this vehicle high please go test drive a Jeep Cherokee or Honda pilot. Much better ride.

Dorothy is the Best Girl (Vehicle) I ever owned!

I owned a Nissan Pathfinder and thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. I reviewed, looked over and test drove the 4Runner. Honestly and truly,I fell in love with the feature's,capabilities, the mileage capabilities because I have learned to tweak the computer a little. After 6 year's in Dec.,it looks almost as good as it did the day I bought it! I am very cognizant of the care my vehicle gets, and when the Dealer kept disregarding my complaint's about oily finger print's and oily body print's on my 4Runner,I fired them because of this, and the LIE THEY TOLD ME,saying that they no longer use Fender Cover's like they did when I bought it from them BRAND NEW! I FIRED THEM! Dealer prices are already in the Cloud's and with that price,I expect excellence at every level of service to my vehicle. I did have a Ceramic Coating applied when it was Brand New,and the shine is still so brilliant that I still get a Ton of Compliment's and stares from other SR5 4Runner owner's. The paint color is Midnight Blue Metallic. Thats a very pleasing feeling also knowing that I can pull up next to a little car,and he can see every detail of his vehicle and even the face of his passenger in the paint! This page is not long enough to say how much I am still enamored with this vehicle. It still has only 54000 miles on it and not even broken in! Always stay ahead of the curve on your Oil Changes and preventative maintenance and she just might be with you longer than your last wife?

Reliable

2nd 4 runner for me. This one has 3rd row seating whichbi like! The leather seats already started to peal. Very dissapointed the running boards sometimes stick and don't go back in automatically.

Buy a Highlander you’ll never go wrong

The overall reliability and performances vehicle has been outstanding. Every day it drives like a brand new vehicle with a minimum of service. Only major service items have been on the highway parts like tires and brakes.

Toyota 4Runner

I went from a Venza to a 4Runner. Cannot beat the reliability of Toyota’s. Wanted a bigger vehicle with towing capacity. Certainly am not disappointed!

Great SUV

This SUV is the perfect car for highway driving and hauling large things. It rides high yet is smooth on the road and responsive. Great large vehicle,
