The 2014 Toyota 4Runner is a rugged, body-on-frame SUV that has been a staple in Toyota's lineup for decades. It's known for its off-road prowess and reliability. The 2014 model is part of the fifth generation (2010-present). Key trims include SR5, Trail (later TRD Off-Road), and Limited. Pricing in 2014 ranged from approximately $32,000 to $43,000. Its standout feature is its exceptional off-road capability and durability, making it a popular choice for adventurers.
The Good

The 2014 4Runner boasts strong off-road performance and legendary Toyota reliability, appealing to practical buyers. Its rugged design and spacious interior offer comfort. While not the most efficient, it holds its value well. Emotionally, it provides a sense of adventure and capability, making it a desirable choice for those seeking a durable SUV.

The Bad

The 2014 4Runner's weaknesses include its dated interior, subpar fuel economy, and less-than-stellar on-road handling compared to car-based SUVs. Watch out for potential rust issues, especially in areas with road salt. The infotainment system is also relatively basic for its model year. Some owners find the ride quality firm.

What Problems Does the 2014 Toyota 4Runner Have?

The 2014 Toyota 4Runner is generally considered reliable, but some frequently reported problems include:
  • Rust: Frame rust can be a concern, especially in regions with heavy road salt use. Regular inspections are crucial.
  • Water Leaks: Some owners have reported water leaks, often around the windshield or sunroof.
  • Entune System Issues: The infotainment system can be slow and outdated, with occasional software glitches.
  • Suspension Issues: Some owners have reported issues with the X-REAS suspension system on the Limited trim, which can be expensive to repair.
  • Airbag Recalls: Like many vehicles from this era, it is important to check if the specific vehicle has been subject to any airbag recalls and if those recalls have been addressed.

Long-term reliability is generally very good, but preventative maintenance is key. Regular fluid changes, inspections, and addressing minor issues promptly can help extend the life of the vehicle. Check for service records to ensure that previous owners have kept up with scheduled maintenance.

How long will the 2014 Toyota 4Runner last?

With proper maintenance, a 2014 Toyota 4Runner can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding 300,000 miles with regular servicing. Durability is a strong point, thanks to its robust body-on-frame construction. Weaknesses over time primarily involve wear and tear on suspension components, potential rust issues (especially in colder climates), and the aging of rubber components like hoses and seals. Regular fluid changes and proactive maintenance are crucial for maximizing its lifespan. The engine and transmission are generally very reliable.

Negative Owner Reviews
Unhappy4RunnerOwner
Bought the 4Runner new 4 years ago. Love the design of the car and the size is great. Unfortunately, the locks on the doors have stopped working on both the driver and passenger side. A key is required to enter on driver side and you have to reach over to then let a passenger in. The passenger lock has to be manually used on that side to lock the car. The fix was quoted at $800 per door. The driver side stopped working at the 3 year mark and the passenger side stopped at 3.5 years (both just out of warranty). This should not be an issue for a newer vehicle. In addition the central console occasionally freezes (once per trip) and has to be restarted. I?ve done some research and it seems like the door issue is fairly common with this model so I would not recommend the vehicle.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 Toyota 4Runner's tech is relatively basic compared to newer vehicles. Standard features include a 6.1-inch touchscreen display, a rearview camera, Bluetooth connectivity, and a six-speaker audio system. Higher trims offer a premium JBL sound system and navigation.
Driver-assistance features are limited, with no advanced systems like adaptive cruise control or lane departure warning available. Safety features include standard antilock brakes, stability control, and a full suite of airbags.
Optional features included Toyota's Entune infotainment system, which provides access to apps like Pandora and iHeartRadio.
Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) show mixed results. It received good ratings in some categories but marginal ratings in others, particularly the small overlap front test. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave it an overall rating of four out of five stars. The lack of advanced safety features is a notable drawback compared to more modern SUVs.

2014 Toyota 4Runner Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2014 Toyota 4Runner ranged from around $32,000 to $43,000 depending on the trim level and options. Used market prices in today's market can range from $20,000 to $35,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The 4Runner holds its value exceptionally well due to its reputation for reliability and off-road capability. Lower mileage examples and those in excellent condition command higher prices. Factors affecting resale value include trim level (Limited and TRD Off-Road tend to hold their value best), maintenance history, and overall condition.

2014 Toyota 4Runner Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2014 Toyota 4Runner are typically moderate. Fuel costs are higher due to its relatively poor fuel economy. Maintenance costs are generally reasonable, as Toyota parts are readily available and relatively affordable. Repairs can be more expensive if issues arise with the X-REAS suspension or if rust damage is present. Overall, while not the most economical SUV to own due to fuel consumption, its reliability helps keep long-term ownership costs manageable. Preventative maintenance is crucial to avoid costly repairs down the road.

2014 Toyota 4Runner Insurance

Insurance for a 2014 Toyota 4Runner is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2014 Toyota 4Runner Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2014 Toyota 4Runner competes with SUVs like the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Nissan Xterra (discontinued), and Honda Pilot. In terms of off-road performance, the 4Runner excels, surpassing the Pilot and matching or exceeding the Grand Cherokee depending on the trim. Feature-wise, the 4Runner lags behind, especially in technology and driver-assistance systems. Reliability is where the 4Runner shines, generally outperforming its rivals. Price-wise, it's competitive, but its retained value makes it more expensive on the used market.
Alternatives:
* Jeep Grand Cherokee: Offers a more refined on-road experience and more modern features, but reliability can be a concern.
* Toyota Highlander: A more comfortable and fuel-efficient option for those who don't need serious off-road capability.
* Nissan Xterra (if found in good condition): A more affordable but less refined off-road-oriented alternative.
If off-road capability and reliability are paramount, the 4Runner is a top choice. If on-road comfort and features are more important, the Grand Cherokee or Highlander might be better options.

Ranks #91 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner a Good Vehicle?

The 2014 Toyota 4Runner is ideal for buyers prioritizing off-road capability and long-term reliability over modern tech and fuel efficiency. It's a good buy if found in good condition with a clean maintenance history. Opt for the Trail (TRD Off-Road) trim for serious off-roading or the Limited for added comfort. Avoid examples with significant rust. A used 2014 4Runner is a worthwhile purchase if you understand its strengths and weaknesses, and are willing to prioritize durability and capability over the latest features found in newer SUVs. Check thoroughly for any previous damage or neglect.

Had a 4Runner before -went to BMW =Bring My Wallet

So I left Toyota for a BMW 3 then subsequently 7 series. For the Ultimate Driving Machine I was left with the ultimate maintenance machine. I expected BMW quality to be equal to if not better than that of Toyota. I was horribly disappointed. While the 3 series was not as bad, that 7 series was a garage queen. Oil leaks, electronic malfunctions and various other maladies finally forced me to part ways with her.I apologized profusely to Toyota for my lapse in judgment and begged them to take me back. They did with open arms. I reacquainted myself with a 4Runner limited model and couldn’t be happier. No more monthly maintenance bills over 1000 dollars a pop, a front end that shakes, or a car that after replacing engine seals that decides to leak every 8 mos, or a cooling system rebuild every 2 years. Toyota is bulletproof! I love my 4Runner limited, fully optioned and best of all 0 maintenance compared to BMW. Of course I expect maintenance cost but it will be nothing compared to a BMW. Learned my lesson. Gonna stick with Toyota.

One of the very best cars I’ve ever owned.

This is an amazing vehicle it has more options than my previous car a Mercedes. It is super reliable , extremely comfortable, great mileage for its size, ok then why am I selling it? I’m a car nut and just on to the next adventure. The 4 runner is one of the best vehicles anyone could own. And let’s not forget the great resale value.
