Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2003 Subaru Legacy is a mid-size car known for its standard all-wheel drive, a hallmark of Subaru vehicles. Offered as a sedan or wagon, this generation ran from 2000-2004. Key trims included the L, GT, and GT Limited. What makes it stand out is its sure-footed handling in all weather conditions and reputation for reliability. At the time, new pricing ranged roughly from $19,000 to $27,000.
The Good

The 2003 Subaru Legacy offers reliable performance thanks to its standard AWD, appealing to practical buyers seeking security in various weather conditions. It also provided a comfortable ride. The horizontally opposed "boxer" engine design contributes to a low center of gravity, enhancing handling and giving enthusiasts an emotional connection to the driving experience. It was considered a good value for the money.

The Bad

Some weaknesses of the 2003 Subaru Legacy include potential for head gasket issues, a common concern for Subarus of this era. The automatic transmission can also experience problems. Rust can be a concern, especially in areas with harsh winters. The interior design may feel dated compared to rivals.

What Problems Does the 2003 Subaru Legacy Have?

The 2003 Subaru Legacy is known for its reliability, but it does have some common issues to watch out for. The most frequently reported problem is head gasket failure, a widespread issue in Subarus with the 2.5-liter engine from this era. Symptoms include overheating, coolant leaks, and white smoke from the exhaust. Repairing this issue can be costly.
Another common concern is automatic transmission issues, such as slipping or rough shifting. Regular transmission fluid changes are crucial to prevent these problems. Rust is also a potential issue, especially in areas that use road salt during the winter. Check the undercarriage, wheel wells, and body panels for signs of corrosion.
Recalls for the 2003 Legacy were relatively limited, but it's always a good idea to check the NHTSA website for any outstanding recalls related to your specific vehicle. Long-term reliability can be affected by deferred maintenance, so ensure the car has a well-documented service history. Regular oil changes, timing belt replacements (at the recommended interval), and other routine maintenance items are essential to keep the car running smoothly for years to come. Ignoring these can exacerbate existing weaknesses and lead to more significant problems down the road.

How long will the 2003 Subaru Legacy last?

With proper maintenance, a 2003 Subaru Legacy can easily exceed 200,000 miles and provide 15-20 years of service. Many owners report reaching or surpassing these milestones. However, longevity heavily depends on consistent maintenance, especially addressing known issues like head gaskets and transmission servicing. Neglecting maintenance will significantly shorten its lifespan. Long-term durability is generally good, but weaknesses like rust and potential engine problems require attention to ensure long-term ownership satisfaction.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2003 Subaru Legacy offered a reasonable array of tech and safety features for its time, though it lacks the advanced driver-assistance systems found in modern vehicles.
Built-in Tech & Entertainment: The base L trim typically came with a basic AM/FM radio and CD player. Higher trims like the GT and GT Limited offered upgraded sound systems, sometimes including a cassette player in addition to the CD player. Navigation was not a commonly available factory option.
Driver-Assistance Features: Driver-assistance features were minimal. ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) was a standard safety feature. Cruise control was available on higher trims.
Safety Features: Standard safety features included front airbags. Side airbags were optional on some trims. All-wheel drive provided enhanced stability in various driving conditions, contributing to overall safety.
Optional Features: Depending on the trim level and packages, optional features included a sunroof, leather upholstery, upgraded wheels, and fog lights.
Crash-Test Ratings: The 2003 Subaru Legacy generally received good crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) for frontal crash protection. These ratings can be found on their respective websites. Always consult these agencies for the most accurate and up-to-date safety information.

2003 Subaru Legacy Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2003 Subaru Legacy ranged from approximately $19,000 to $27,000 depending on the trim and options. Currently, used market prices vary significantly based on condition, mileage, and location. Expect to find them priced anywhere from $2,000 to $7,000, or even less for high-mileage or poorly maintained examples. Depreciation has been significant due to age. Factors affecting resale value include the car's overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, and the presence of desirable options like leather seats or a sunroof. The all-wheel-drive system also helps retain some value, particularly in regions with inclement weather.

2003 Subaru Legacy Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2003 Subaru Legacy are generally moderate due to its age and value. Fuel costs are average for a mid-size car of that era. Maintenance can be higher than some rivals, especially if head gasket issues arise. Repair costs can also be moderate to high, depending on the specific problem. Long-term ownership costs are average but can escalate if major repairs are needed. The vehicle isn't particularly economical, but not overly costly either, falling into a middle ground.

2003 Subaru Legacy Insurance

Insurance for a 2003 Subaru Legacy is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Passenger Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2003 Subaru Legacy Compare to Other Passenger Sedan?

The 2003 Subaru Legacy competed with mid-size sedans and wagons like the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Mazda 626, and Nissan Altima. In terms of performance, the Legacy's AWD gave it an edge in inclement weather compared to its FWD rivals. However, its engine wasn't as powerful as some competitors' V6 options. Features were generally comparable, although some rivals offered more advanced tech. Reliability is a mixed bag; the Legacy has good overall reliability, but the head gasket issue is a significant concern.
Price-wise, the Legacy was generally competitive. A Toyota Camry from the same year might offer slightly better long-term reliability and a wider range of engine options, while a Honda Accord could provide a more refined driving experience. The Mazda 626 was known for its sporty handling. As alternatives, if all-weather capability isn't a priority, a Camry or Accord might be a better choice due to their strong reliability reputations. However, if AWD is essential, the Legacy remains a strong contender, especially if you find one with a well-documented maintenance history and no signs of head gasket problems. A later model Subaru with updated engine designs addressing the head gasket issue may also be a better choice.

Final Verdict: Is the 2003 Subaru Legacy a Good Passenger Sedan?

The 2003 Subaru Legacy is ideal for someone who needs reliable all-wheel drive on a budget. It's a good choice for drivers in snowy or wet climates. Whether it's worth buying depends heavily on its condition and maintenance history. A well-maintained example with no head gasket issues can be a solid purchase. Avoid models with rust or signs of neglect. The GT or GT Limited trims offer more features and a slightly sportier driving experience. It's only worth buying used, as new models are obviously no longer available. Before purchasing, have a mechanic inspect it thoroughly, paying close attention to the head gaskets, transmission, and undercarriage.

Overall, this car is well above-average

*this is the Legacy L Special Edition, not the base trim Lots of positive things to say about this car, with only a few minor negatives. Pros: -EXCELLENT in the snow, rain, etc given the very well performing AWD, which is superior to all other AWD systems. -Easy to drive, easy to service (oil drain plug points forwards, very easy and simple to access) -good interior -- all added features have no issues (eg heated seats, power windows, etc) -good visibility and control -gas mileage is fairly good. Not as good as say, a Honda Civic, but much better than other cars in this class or larger sedans. -Put 30,000 kms since bought (used) with no problems other than regular maintenance Cons: -comfortable overall, but suited for persons of average height or less -automatic drive shifter is annoying to shift into drive -no auxiliary adapter -- built in sound system is not great (unless upgraded) -you have to push the fob button at least twice to unlock the back doors Neutrals: -accelerator pedal (on automatics) increases speed based on how quickly you push the pedal, as opposed to how hard you push it. This is something to get used to, as, if you are trying to access maximum power by pushing the pedal really hard, it won't make the car rev harder. Most cars don't work this way and it gives the illusion that this car is under-powered. However, I assure you, if you push the pedal quickly and allow it to rev fully to 6,000 rpm, it has adequate power.

Reliable but Not Much Power

One thing that I LOVE about my Subaru is about how reliable it is. It's an older vehicle and it will go forever! However, when it comes to speed it lacks quite a bit compared to most other cars.

Keeps on going

Bought a Subaru for reliability and wasn't disappointed. 117,000 miles and it has a lot of life left in it. No major problems.

the legacy is a great car.

great design and performance. I had a lot of fun with that car. It was definitely my favorite car. The all wheel drive was great. I still put winter tires on because I had to drive in all weather conditions. With snow tire on it the car was a tank in the winter. I live in Vermont.

Good and reliable at beginning then more problems then I have had with my other Subarus I had problems with starting it that cost me over a thousand dollars. Axel problems for s lot of money, and a lot of little leaks in engine that needed fixing

Owned Car for 9 Years

I have owned my Subaru Legacy Sedan for 9 years. I have seen wear and tear on the vehicle. The brakes have lasted pretty long. I only had to replace them 2 years ago. The back breaks will be replaced in the near future. The exhaust is annoying as it rattles and the windows let wind noise in. This is a defect in the car. I have a person that does a regular oil change on it. They have stated that the oil is leaking badly. It smells like tires. I think this is because the vehicle is old. I have less than 100,000 miles on it. I have gotten tires two times and tires are pretty cheap to find for this vehicle. Customer Service at any Subaru dealership is outstanding. They do not treat any car owner different. There is wear and tear on the vehicle inside but it looks good for being 14 years old. It is harder to clean. It drives nice in the rain or snow. Midwest winters can be harsh and I have not seen (cross my fingers, knock on wood) rust on any of the body.

Great deal

I am lovingnthis car so far. That is probably due to the wonderful service I got at Acord Auto in Richmond ME. It is a ten year old car but the mileage is low and it has new gaskets belts and the brakes had been replaced fairly recently. In my experience Japanese cars can keep trucking for hundreds of thousands of miles so buying a car with under 100k miles that has been well maintained is the best way to go. It is old and i have to say it isnt the best looking car but I have a feeling it is going to last me a long time. I put seafoam engine treatment in the gas tank which I would highly recommend for any older car. It just cleans out the engine a bit and makes it run a little smoother. I got the hatchback which is amazing and can fit a ton of stuff in the back. I will say that the boxer engine did sound a little weird to me at first but It is an overall much more efficent design and the awd makes it great for the snow. I love my subie!

Great car!

Great car, very dependable and durable, love mine. Don't buy a Subaru if you like to have a new car often as you won't ever have a reason to trade it...they are that good!

A very good wagon

I like this small wagon with AWD. It has enough space in the back to put our two bikes or small pieces of furniture. It is an extremely useful car and the price was okay too. It is also very reliable. I like the AWD. It seems safer and I think is safer than non-AWD vehicles. The only drawback is that while the gas mileage is okay, I would like it to be better. The next time I buy a car, hopefully not for 3 or more years yet, gas mileage will be a very important consideration.
