Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2012 Subaru Legacy is a mid-size sedan known for its standard all-wheel drive. Part of the fifth generation (2010-2014), it offers practicality and sure-footedness. Key trims include the base, Premium, Limited, and Sport models. Original pricing ranged from approximately $20,000 to $28,000. Its popularity stems from its AWD capability, making it ideal for all-weather conditions and those prioritizing traction and stability, setting it apart from many front-wheel-drive competitors.
The Good

The 2012 Subaru Legacy offers all-weather capability thanks to its standard AWD, appealing to emotional buyers seeking confidence in challenging conditions. Practically, it boasts decent reliability and a comfortable ride. It represents a good value proposition in the used market. While not a performance standout, its efficiency is reasonable, and the design is understated and functional.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2012 Subaru Legacy include its somewhat bland interior styling and the base engine's adequate but not thrilling performance. Oil consumption can be a concern in some models. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) can also be a source of problems, so it's essential to check its maintenance history and condition before purchase.

What Problems Does the 2012 Subaru Legacy Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2012 Subaru Legacy often revolve around oil consumption, particularly in the 2.5-liter engine. Some owners have reported excessive oil usage requiring frequent top-offs. The CVT transmission can also be a source of concern, with some experiencing issues like shuddering or slipping, especially at higher mileages. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes, is crucial for CVT longevity.
Recalls for the 2012 Legacy have included issues related to the fuel pump, which could potentially lead to engine stalling. Always check the NHTSA website for the latest recall information.
Long-term reliability concerns often focus on the longevity of the CVT and the potential for head gasket issues, though these are less common in the 2012 model year compared to earlier Subaru models. Rust can also be a concern in regions with harsh winters and road salt. It is important to inspect the undercarriage for signs of corrosion.
While generally reliable, addressing potential oil consumption and ensuring proper CVT maintenance are key to extending the life of a 2012 Subaru Legacy. Regular inspections by a qualified mechanic are highly recommended.

How long will the 2012 Subaru Legacy last?

With proper maintenance, a 2012 Subaru Legacy can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report getting 10-15 years of service from their Legacys. Long-term durability depends heavily on consistent oil changes, timely CVT fluid replacements, and addressing any developing issues promptly. Potential weaknesses over time include increased oil consumption, CVT issues (if not properly maintained), and rust, especially in areas with salted roads. Paying attention to these areas can significantly extend the vehicle's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Subaru Legacy offers a reasonable level of technology for its time. Standard features include a basic audio system with CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims like Premium and Limited added features like Bluetooth connectivity, USB input, and upgraded audio systems. Navigation was available as an option on some trims.
Driver-assistance features were relatively limited compared to modern cars. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and anti-lock brakes (ABS) were standard. More advanced features like adaptive cruise control or lane departure warning were not available.
Safety features included front, side, and curtain airbags. The 2012 Subaru Legacy performed well in crash tests. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) awarded it a "Top Safety Pick" rating. NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave it a 4-star overall safety rating.
The Limited trim could be equipped with a Harman Kardon premium audio system and a moonroof, enhancing the entertainment experience. Overall, the 2012 Legacy prioritizes safety and reliability over cutting-edge technology, offering a functional but not overly sophisticated suite of features.

2012 Subaru Legacy Prices and Market Value

The 2012 Subaru Legacy had a starting MSRP of around $20,000 when new, with higher trims reaching close to $28,000. Current used market prices typically range from $6,000 to $12,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. Depreciation has been significant, but the Legacy holds its value reasonably well compared to some competitors due to its AWD system and reputation for reliability. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, accident history, and the presence of desirable options like leather seats or a sunroof. Well-maintained examples with lower mileage command higher prices.

2012 Subaru Legacy Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2012 Subaru Legacy are generally moderate. Fuel costs are average for a mid-size sedan with AWD. Maintenance can be slightly higher than some competitors due to the AWD system and potential for oil consumption issues. Repair costs are generally reasonable, but CVT repairs can be expensive. Overall, the 2012 Legacy is neither exceptionally economical nor overly costly to own, with reasonable ownership costs if properly maintained. Addressing potential oil consumption is key to keeping costs down.

2012 Subaru Legacy Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Subaru Legacy is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Subaru Legacy Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2012 Subaru Legacy competes with the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Mazda 6, and Ford Fusion. In terms of performance, the Legacy's base engine is less powerful than some rivals' offerings. Features are generally comparable, although some competitors offer more advanced technology. The Legacy's standard AWD sets it apart, providing a distinct advantage in inclement weather.
Reliability is generally good, but some rivals like the Camry and Accord have a slightly better reputation. Price-wise, the Legacy is competitive, especially on the used market. The Mazda 6 offers more engaging handling, while the Accord and Camry provide superior fuel economy with their base engines (FWD). The Ford Fusion offers a more stylish design.
Alternatives depend on priorities. If AWD is essential, the Legacy is a strong choice. If fuel economy and proven reliability are paramount, the Camry or Accord are better options. If driving enjoyment is a key factor, the Mazda 6 is a compelling alternative. For a blend of style and features, the Ford Fusion deserves consideration. Ultimately, the Legacy's AWD is its key differentiator.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Subaru Legacy a Good Sedan?

The 2012 Subaru Legacy is ideal for buyers who prioritize all-weather capability and appreciate the confidence of standard AWD. It's a worthwhile buy on the used market, especially for those living in regions with snow or rain. A Premium or Limited trim offers a better balance of features and value compared to the base model. Before purchasing, thoroughly inspect for oil leaks, check the CVT's service history, and ensure all recalls have been addressed. If AWD is not a necessity, other sedans may offer better fuel economy or performance. However, for its target audience, the 2012 Legacy provides a reliable and practical option.

Most Reliable Car I have Driven

This car drives very well especially in wintery conditions. The car also has blue tooth which can connect a phone or mp3 player for playing music.

Overheated from day 1

This car seemed to be in beautiful condition but it has been in the shop since we bought it and they have no intentions of fixing the problem. But it is roomy and had lots of head space.

Never plan to sell it.

Excellent car I’ve had for over 6 years now. I never intend to sell it. I have put so many miles on it without any issues and the AWD is excellent. Subaru even replaced the transmission after the warranty expired even though I hadn’t had any issues with it.

3.6 R drives like BMW 335

Its Japaneses BMW or Audi with less cost and more reliable. even in 5 years ownership of this vehicle is not drooping to half or less. like $38k coming to $25k. I have lots of BMW 328, 335,535 and audi A5. You love to drive more and more this Subaru. The only main issue I found is body is getting rusty so fast. this is a manufacture issue. they have to take more protection under paint coat . when the vehicle get rock chips, it will start rust from that point so fast.

Good Reliable Car

Bought it new in Oct 2011, fantastic in snow, I live in a hilly area of PA and still get 28 mpg local and 33 mpg on trips, only issue I had with it was had to replace front wheel bearing, which i did myself. Takata air bag issue was fixed promptly by dealer, very satisfied with car and dealer, Minooka Subaru Moosic PA.

Great solid ride

Great bang for the buck! Does everything you ask it to do without issues. Sun, rain or snow no match for this car. Going to purchase another but this with the 3.6 motor.

I LOVE MY NEW TO ME CAR

I had been searching for a car for 3 months and this was finally what I wanted and needed. I wanted something roomy in case I moved or wanted to drive with friends somewhere, something with great gas mileage for my 45minute commute, something not too old but used and reliable that I know I will have for several years, and lastly the technology is a huge plus!! I also love the sunroof and heated cloth seats because I?m not the biggest fan of a leather.
