The Good
The 2009 Subaru Legacy offers sure-footed all-wheel-drive performance, appealing to practical buyers seeking safety in all conditions. Its reputation for reliability and comfortable ride makes it a sensible choice. Emotionally, the Legacy provides a sense of security and the satisfaction of owning a capable vehicle at a reasonable price. The 2.5GT models provide a sporty edge.
The Bad
Some 2009 Subaru Legacy models, especially those with the 2.5GT turbo engine, can experience oil consumption issues. Head gasket failures are also a known problem with the naturally aspirated 2.5i engine. The interior design is somewhat dated and lacks the sophistication of some competitors. Rust can also be a concern in areas with heavy road salt use.

What Problems Does the 2009 Subaru Legacy Have?
How long will the 2009 Subaru Legacy last?
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Safety features include front and side airbags, as well as side curtain airbags.
The 2009 Subaru Legacy received good crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA. The IIHS awarded it a "Good" rating in frontal offset and side impact tests. The NHTSA gave it four or five stars in frontal and side crash tests, depending on the specific test. The Legacy lacks modern features like blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, or adaptive cruise control, which are common in newer vehicles. Optional features varied by trim level and could include heated seats, a sunroof, and leather upholstery. The basic tech is functional, but buyers seeking advanced features will likely find it lacking compared to newer cars. Its safety record however, is commendable for its time.

How Does the 2009 Subaru Legacy Compare to Other Sedan?
Alternatives to the Legacy include the Honda Accord, which offers excellent reliability and a spacious interior. The Toyota Camry is another reliable option with a comfortable ride. The Mazda6 provides a more sporty driving experience. The Ford Fusion offers a stylish design and good value.
If reliability is a top priority, the Accord or Camry might be better choices. If you're seeking a sporty driving experience and are willing to accept potentially higher maintenance costs, the Mazda6 or 2.5GT Legacy could be appealing. The Fusion offers a good balance of features and value. The Subaru stands out with its standard all-wheel drive, making it preferable for those living in areas with snow or inclement weather.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Subaru Legacy a Good Sedan?

Really good car !!Purchased it in 2020. As been an absolute warrior. Handles snow and all rough terrain superbly. Only complaints is the radio is not easily modifiable(aux to lightning cable fixes this), the woodgrain trim is ugly looking (easy swap/ vinyl wrap). Really good car overall good for teens and older folk. (If you want more speed get better tires and 17 inch tires)

First AWD Car For MeThe car deducts some points but in exchange for it's amazing AWD. Interior is not the spaciest but it's not "cramped" either. Great for heavy snowfall.

Affordable used carThis car was affordable and close to what I was looking for. So far I have enjoyed driving it and will further report dependability after about 3 months of driving

Best value car I've ever ownedI've owned all different types of vehicles and this one was amazing. Sold at 147000 miles and never needed anything but preventative maintenance items. Bought it new, beat it up, and sold it for great resale value.

will not diebought my 2009 limited pzev 2.5i with 23k, one owner. I broke 4 wheel bearings, 2 cats (recalled), the radiator, and an oil sensor. there were 9 recalls which is a bit sketchy. I bought the car as a test really - to see if subaru's really are unbreakable, reliable, and cheap to maintain...im not exactly disappointed... the car currently has 160k of HARD miles. I purposely put a beating on this thing. I tried to get it stuck in deep snow and NOT ONCE would it get stuck. every morning hot or cold it turns right over. engine light came on one time at 150k for an oil pressure sensor ($120), but that's it. the drive train feels invincible - I literally cant break it - I see another 160k added with ease. as for reliability - anything that broke was my fault, or recalled. I think the front end is ugly, its a little long for a car, and everything about it is incredibly basic, but for an overall review I can honestly say this car is great. a little expensive for the basic features, wish I got the GT, but as reliable as they say Subaru's are. 11/10 in terms of mechanics and reliability.
My Legacy on March 8, 2019
My Second LegacyAfter my Subaru was totaled in an accident, I wanted to replace my 2006 Legacy with one from the same era (2005-2009). I ended up purchasing a pre owned 2009 Legacy Limited and really love it. It is a much heavier car than the 2006 by 145 pounds, but it rides just as smooth. The car has a classic sports sedan style to it, and gets decent gas mileage. I wish Subaru would go back and redesign the Legacy to the more sportier, compact size of the Legacy series from 2005-2009.
