The 2009 Subaru Legacy is a mid-size sedan or wagon, part of the fourth generation (2003-2009). Key trims include the base 2.5i, 2.5i Special Edition, 2.5GT, and the XT turbo models. Known for its standard all-wheel drive, a rarity in its class, the Legacy provides enhanced traction and stability. New pricing ranged from approximately $20,000 to $30,000. It's popular for its practicality, reliability, and all-weather capability.
The Good

The 2009 Subaru Legacy offers sure-footed all-wheel-drive performance, appealing to practical buyers seeking safety in all conditions. Its reputation for reliability and comfortable ride makes it a sensible choice. Emotionally, the Legacy provides a sense of security and the satisfaction of owning a capable vehicle at a reasonable price. The 2.5GT models provide a sporty edge.

The Bad

Some 2009 Subaru Legacy models, especially those with the 2.5GT turbo engine, can experience oil consumption issues. Head gasket failures are also a known problem with the naturally aspirated 2.5i engine. The interior design is somewhat dated and lacks the sophistication of some competitors. Rust can also be a concern in areas with heavy road salt use.

What Problems Does the 2009 Subaru Legacy Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2009 Subaru Legacy include head gasket failures, particularly in models with the 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine. Symptoms include overheating and coolant leaks. Oil consumption can be an issue with the 2.5GT turbocharged engine; owners should regularly check oil levels. Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission, such as rough shifting. Recalls for the 2009 Legacy are relatively few, and can be checked on the NHTSA website using the VIN. Long-term reliability concerns center around the aforementioned head gasket and oil consumption issues. Rust, especially in areas where road salt is used, can be a problem. Premature wear of suspension components has also been reported. Overall, regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and coolant flushes, is crucial for maintaining the longevity of the 2009 Legacy. Checking service records before purchasing a used model is highly recommended to assess the vehicle's maintenance history and identify any pre-existing problems. Specific to earlier model years (within the same generation), the automatic transmission had more widespread issues, though these seemed to lessen by 2009.

How long will the 2009 Subaru Legacy last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 Subaru Legacy can reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report over 15 years of service. Long-term durability hinges on addressing the common issues like head gaskets and oil consumption. Regular oil changes (every 3,000-5,000 miles) are critical. Weaknesses include rust, particularly in colder climates. The suspension components might require replacement around the 100,000-mile mark. Properly maintained, the Legacy's engine and transmission can last a long time, making it a durable choice despite potential issues.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Subaru Legacy's built-in tech is relatively basic by modern standards. Standard features include a CD player, AM/FM radio, and an auxiliary audio input. Higher trims offered a premium audio system with a CD changer. Navigation was an optional feature. Driver-assistance features were limited, with ABS and Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) as standard.
Safety features include front and side airbags, as well as side curtain airbags.
The 2009 Subaru Legacy received good crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA. The IIHS awarded it a "Good" rating in frontal offset and side impact tests. The NHTSA gave it four or five stars in frontal and side crash tests, depending on the specific test. The Legacy lacks modern features like blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, or adaptive cruise control, which are common in newer vehicles. Optional features varied by trim level and could include heated seats, a sunroof, and leather upholstery. The basic tech is functional, but buyers seeking advanced features will likely find it lacking compared to newer cars. Its safety record however, is commendable for its time.

2009 Subaru Legacy Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Subaru Legacy ranged from approximately $20,000 to $30,000, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $10,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Legacy has depreciated significantly due to its age and mileage. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition, maintenance history, and whether it has the desirable 2.5GT turbo engine. Models with lower mileage and a clean title command higher prices. All-wheel drive remains a selling point, particularly in snowy regions. Potential buyers should factor in potential maintenance costs when considering a used 2009 Legacy.

2009 Subaru Legacy Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2009 Subaru Legacy are generally moderate. Fuel costs depend on the engine; the 2.5i is relatively economical, while the 2.5GT and 3.0R consume more fuel. Maintenance can be moderate if common issues like head gaskets are addressed proactively. Repair costs can be high if major engine or transmission work is needed. Long-term ownership costs can be moderate to high depending on the car's condition and the owner's maintenance habits. Potential buyers should budget for potential repairs.

2009 Subaru Legacy Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Subaru Legacy is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Subaru Legacy Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2009 Subaru Legacy competes with the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Mazda6, and Ford Fusion. In terms of performance, the 2.5GT Legacy offered a turbocharged advantage over base models of rivals. The Accord and Camry were generally considered more reliable overall, especially regarding head gasket issues. Feature-wise, the Legacy was competitive but lacked some of the advanced tech available in the Accord or Mazda6. Price-wise, the Legacy was generally in line with its competitors.
Alternatives to the Legacy include the Honda Accord, which offers excellent reliability and a spacious interior. The Toyota Camry is another reliable option with a comfortable ride. The Mazda6 provides a more sporty driving experience. The Ford Fusion offers a stylish design and good value.
If reliability is a top priority, the Accord or Camry might be better choices. If you're seeking a sporty driving experience and are willing to accept potentially higher maintenance costs, the Mazda6 or 2.5GT Legacy could be appealing. The Fusion offers a good balance of features and value. The Subaru stands out with its standard all-wheel drive, making it preferable for those living in areas with snow or inclement weather.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Subaru Legacy a Good Sedan?

The 2009 Subaru Legacy is ideal for buyers seeking a reliable and capable mid-size sedan with standard all-wheel drive. It's worth buying as a used car if you find a well-maintained example with service records. The 2.5i model is a good choice for those prioritizing fuel economy and reliability. The 2.5GT is appealing for its performance, but be aware of potential oil consumption issues. Avoid models with signs of head gasket problems or rust. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended. Consider it a solid choice for practicality and all-weather capability at an affordable price, provided you’re aware of its potential drawbacks and address them proactively.

Really good car !!

Purchased it in 2020. As been an absolute warrior. Handles snow and all rough terrain superbly. Only complaints is the radio is not easily modifiable(aux to lightning cable fixes this), the woodgrain trim is ugly looking (easy swap/ vinyl wrap). Really good car overall good for teens and older folk. (If you want more speed get better tires and 17 inch tires)

First AWD Car For Me

The car deducts some points but in exchange for it's amazing AWD. Interior is not the spaciest but it's not "cramped" either. Great for heavy snowfall.

Affordable used car

This car was affordable and close to what I was looking for. So far I have enjoyed driving it and will further report dependability after about 3 months of driving

Best value car I've ever owned

I've owned all different types of vehicles and this one was amazing. Sold at 147000 miles and never needed anything but preventative maintenance items. Bought it new, beat it up, and sold it for great resale value.

will not die

bought my 2009 limited pzev 2.5i with 23k, one owner. I broke 4 wheel bearings, 2 cats (recalled), the radiator, and an oil sensor. there were 9 recalls which is a bit sketchy. I bought the car as a test really - to see if subaru's really are unbreakable, reliable, and cheap to maintain...im not exactly disappointed... the car currently has 160k of HARD miles. I purposely put a beating on this thing. I tried to get it stuck in deep snow and NOT ONCE would it get stuck. every morning hot or cold it turns right over. engine light came on one time at 150k for an oil pressure sensor ($120), but that's it. the drive train feels invincible - I literally cant break it - I see another 160k added with ease. as for reliability - anything that broke was my fault, or recalled. I think the front end is ugly, its a little long for a car, and everything about it is incredibly basic, but for an overall review I can honestly say this car is great. a little expensive for the basic features, wish I got the GT, but as reliable as they say Subaru's are. 11/10 in terms of mechanics and reliability.

My Legacy on March 8, 2019

My Second Legacy

After my Subaru was totaled in an accident, I wanted to replace my 2006 Legacy with one from the same era (2005-2009). I ended up purchasing a pre owned 2009 Legacy Limited and really love it. It is a much heavier car than the 2006 by 145 pounds, but it rides just as smooth. The car has a classic sports sedan style to it, and gets decent gas mileage. I wish Subaru would go back and redesign the Legacy to the more sportier, compact size of the Legacy series from 2005-2009.

Great car in the short time I have owned it. Handles well, the fit is great and the AWD was a bonus these past couple of snow storms
