What Problems Does the 2022 Subaru Legacy Have?

The 2022 Subaru Legacy, while generally reliable, has experienced some frequently reported problems. One common concern revolves around the infotainment system, with some users reporting sluggish performance, occasional freezing, and difficulties with connecting to Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Some owners have noted excessive oil consumption, particularly in earlier model years of this generation. This is something to monitor closely, especially as the car ages. Transmission issues, specifically related to the CVT, have also surfaced, with complaints ranging from hesitation during acceleration to occasional rough shifting. While not widespread, these reports are worth noting.

Recalls for the 2022 Legacy have been relatively minimal, but it's crucial to check the NHTSA website for any outstanding recalls related to your specific VIN. Long-term reliability concerns often center around the longevity of the CVT transmission and the potential for increased oil consumption over time. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and CVT fluid servicing, is vital to mitigate these potential issues. Some owners recommend shortening the recommended CVT fluid change interval to prolong its life.

How long will the 2022 Subaru Legacy last?

With proper maintenance, the 2022 Subaru Legacy can realistically provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. Subarus, in general, are known for their longevity. However, long-term durability hinges on diligent maintenance, especially regarding oil changes and CVT fluid servicing. Potential weaknesses include the aforementioned CVT transmission issues and potential oil consumption as the engine ages. Rust can also be a concern in areas with heavy road salt usage. Regularly washing the undercarriage can help prevent rust. Properly caring for the CVT is critical for long-term reliability.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2022 Subaru Legacy boasts a solid array of tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. Standard features include a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Higher trims feature a large 11.6-inch touchscreen. The infotainment system controls audio, climate, and vehicle settings.

Driver-assistance features are abundant, including standard EyeSight driver assist technology: adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and lane keeping assist. Blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic braking are available on upper trims.

Optional features include a Harman Kardon premium audio system, navigation, a sunroof, and a driver monitoring system that detects driver fatigue or distraction.

The 2022 Subaru Legacy performs exceptionally well in crash tests. It typically earns top safety ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), including a Top Safety Pick+ designation when equipped with specific headlights. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) also awards it high scores for overall safety. The robust safety features and strong crash-test performance contribute significantly to the Legacy's appeal.

2022 Subaru Legacy Prices and Market Value

The 2022 Subaru Legacy had a starting MSRP of around $23,000 when new, with higher trims reaching close to $37,000. Current used market prices range from approximately $18,000 to $32,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Legacy depreciates at an average rate for its class. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, trim level, and service history. Subarus generally hold their value reasonably well due to their reputation for reliability and standard AWD. The turbo models tend to retain slightly more value.

2022 Subaru Legacy Cost of Ownership

The 2022 Subaru Legacy is generally considered economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially with the base engine. Maintenance costs are average for its class. Subaru parts are readily available. While major repairs can be expensive (particularly related to the CVT), the Legacy's reliability helps keep overall repair costs down. Long-term ownership costs are manageable, making it a financially sensible choice. Regular maintenance is key to minimizing expenses.

How Does the 2022 Subaru Legacy Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2022 Subaru Legacy competes with mid-size sedans like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, and Hyundai Sonata. Compared to the Camry and Accord, the Legacy stands out with its standard AWD, a significant advantage in snowy or wet conditions. The Altima also offers optional AWD. In terms of reliability, the Camry and Accord have a slight edge in some surveys.

The Sonata and Altima offer more modern styling and tech features, while the Legacy's design is more conservative. Performance-wise, the Legacy's turbo engine is competitive, but the base engine can feel underpowered compared to some rivals' offerings.

Price-wise, the Legacy is generally competitive. If AWD is not a priority, the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord are excellent alternatives with strong reliability records and well-rounded features. The Hyundai Sonata offers a compelling value proposition with its stylish design and extensive features list. However, for those prioritizing all-weather capability and a reputation for reliability, the 2022 Subaru Legacy remains a strong contender. The Mazda 6 (though discontinued after 2021) also offered a more engaging driving experience.

Final Verdict: Is the 2022 Subaru Legacy a Good Sedan?

The 2022 Subaru Legacy is ideal for drivers who prioritize all-weather capability and a reputation for reliability. It's a solid choice for those living in areas with snow or frequent rain. Whether it's worth buying depends on individual needs and preferences. A used 2022 Legacy can offer excellent value, especially if you find a well-maintained model with low mileage.

If performance is a high priority, consider the Touring XT trim with the turbocharged engine. Otherwise, the Premium or Limited trims offer a good balance of features and value. If AWD is non-negotiable, and you need a reliable midsize sedan, the Legacy is a strong contender. However, if you don't need AWD, there are other comparable options on the market.

love my Subaru

from the first day I had it I haven’t had any issues with it as it handles great and gas economy is awesome. I don’t have a negative to write. I drove Lincoln’s for the last 20 or more years and because they stopped making cars and only Crossovers or SVU’s, I searched high and low to find an equivalent car and googled all the options that were a must and the Subaru Legacy Elite came up and my husband and I went to look and drove out with our new car and couldn’t be happier. The ride is comfortable and the car is just great.
