Rating: 4.46
Based on 47 Owner Reviews
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2014 Subaru Legacy is a mid-size sedan, part of the fifth generation (2010-2014). Key trims include the base, Premium, Limited, and Sport. New pricing ranged from approximately $20,000 to $29,000. It stands out due to its standard all-wheel drive, a feature uncommon in its class, offering enhanced traction and stability in various weather conditions, making it a popular choice for those in colder climates or who appreciate added safety.
The Good

The 2014 Subaru Legacy offers all-weather capability thanks to its standard AWD (emotional appeal). Practical buyers appreciate its reliability, comfortable ride, and good value. The design is understated yet functional, and fuel efficiency is competitive, making it a sensible and safe choice.

The Bad

The 2014 Subaru Legacy's weaknesses include a somewhat bland interior design and occasionally sluggish base engine performance. Some owners have reported issues with excessive oil consumption. The continuously variable transmission (CVT), though fuel-efficient, may not appeal to drivers seeking a more engaging driving experience. Watch for potential issues with the infotainment system.

What Problems Does the 2014 Subaru Legacy Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2014 Subaru Legacy include excessive oil consumption, particularly in models with the 2.5L engine. This can lead to engine damage if not monitored and addressed promptly. Another common complaint involves the continuously variable transmission (CVT), with some owners reporting jerky acceleration or premature failure. Some models experienced recalls related to airbag inflators, a widespread issue affecting numerous manufacturers. Other potential issues include problems with the infotainment system, such as Bluetooth connectivity glitches and screen malfunctions. Long-term reliability concerns center around the longevity of the CVT transmission and the potential for engine issues related to oil consumption. Regular oil level checks and adherence to scheduled maintenance are crucial for mitigating these risks. It's advisable to obtain a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic to assess the vehicle's condition and identify any existing or potential problems, specifically checking for any signs of excessive oil consumption or transmission issues.

How long will the 2014 Subaru Legacy last?

With proper maintenance, a 2014 Subaru Legacy can typically achieve 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report reaching these milestones with regular oil changes, fluid checks, and timely repairs. However, the long-term durability can be affected by the previously mentioned oil consumption issue and CVT transmission reliability. Weaknesses over time often involve suspension components, such as struts and bushings, and potential corrosion in regions with harsh winters. Consistent maintenance, including addressing minor issues promptly, is key to maximizing the vehicle's lifespan.

I love the AWD system. The car handles very well in snow. It handles really good no matter the road conditions. I've owned this car for 7 years and it's never left me stranded. Gets decent gas mileage. And it has great visibility. The 2014 Legacy 3.6R is overall my favorite car I've ever owned. If I had one thing I'd like to see improved, it would be to make a turbo or preferably a twin turbo version with like 450HP.

Was in the market for a Subaru when I came across this car at a used car lot. Immediately purchased it that day. It's a manual transmission and the clutch is super smooth. Great on gas. The trunk space is expanded by the back seats folding down. The seats are super comfortable. The only thing that's super important is to make sure you can depress the clutch all the way. I am... Very short ha. I've driven manuals before and never had this problem. But I cannot depress the clutch all the way even at the closest seat setting. So I have to get an extension which is fine but I know next car I buy I'm checking to see. That's the only reason I gave this car 4/5 stars.

Great handling, minimal maintenance. Good highway gas mileage. Easy to figure out all of the controls. Would definitely purchase another vehicle just like this one.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 Subaru Legacy offers a range of built-in tech and safety features. Standard on the base model includes Bluetooth connectivity, a 4-speaker audio system, and basic safety features like anti-lock brakes and stability control. Higher trims like the Premium and Limited add features such as an upgraded audio system, a touchscreen infotainment system (though relatively basic), and optional features like a Harman Kardon premium sound system and a sunroof. Driver-assistance features are limited compared to modern vehicles, with no standard advanced safety tech like automatic emergency braking or lane departure warning. However, the Legacy does offer available features like a rearview camera.

In terms of safety, the 2014 Subaru Legacy performed well in crash tests. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) awarded it a "Top Safety Pick" rating. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) also gave it a 5-star overall safety rating. These ratings reflect the vehicle's strong performance in frontal, side, and rollover crash tests. The Legacy's standard all-wheel-drive system further enhances safety by providing superior traction and stability in various driving conditions. The availability of features like Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) also contributed to its good safety performance. Overall, the 2014 Subaru Legacy prioritizes safety with its robust crash performance and standard AWD system, though its tech features are relatively basic compared to newer models.

2014 Subaru Legacy Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2014 Subaru Legacy had a starting price around $20,000, with higher trims reaching close to $30,000. Current used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Legacy depreciates at an average rate for its class. Its standard AWD helps retain value, especially in regions with inclement weather. Factors negatively impacting resale value include high mileage, poor maintenance history, and any reported accidents or major mechanical issues, such as documented oil consumption problems. The availability of newer models with updated features also contributes to depreciation.

2014 Subaru Legacy Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2014 Subaru Legacy are typically average for a mid-size sedan. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially with the 2.5L engine. Maintenance can be moderately expensive due to the AWD system, requiring more frequent fluid changes. Potential repairs, particularly related to oil consumption and the CVT, can increase long-term ownership costs. Overall, the Legacy isn't excessively costly to own but requires diligent maintenance to avoid potential expensive repairs. Addressing potential oil consumption early is key to keeping costs down.

2014 Subaru Legacy Insurance

Insurance for a 2014 Subaru Legacy is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2014 Subaru Legacy Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2014 Subaru Legacy competes with mid-size sedans like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, and Mazda 6. In terms of performance, the Legacy's base engine lags behind some rivals, but the 3.6L offers competitive power. Its standard AWD is a unique selling point, unmatched by most competitors. Feature-wise, the Legacy is generally less advanced than newer models of its rivals, lacking the latest driver-assistance technologies. Reliability is generally good, but the oil consumption issue is a concern. Price-wise, the Legacy is competitive, especially on the used market.

Alternatives to consider include:
  • Toyota Camry: Known for its exceptional reliability and fuel economy.
  • Honda Accord: Offers a more engaging driving experience and a more spacious interior.
  • Ford Fusion: Provides stylish design and available hybrid options.
  • Mazda 6: Boasts sporty handling and a premium interior.
If AWD is a must, the Legacy is a strong contender. However, if reliability and advanced features are higher priorities, the Camry or Accord might be better choices. The Fusion and Mazda 6 offer more stylish and engaging alternatives, although without standard AWD.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Subaru Legacy a Good Sedan?

The 2014 Subaru Legacy is ideal for buyers who prioritize all-wheel drive for enhanced safety and traction in all weather conditions. It's a worthwhile purchase on the used market, particularly for those seeking a reliable and affordable mid-size sedan with AWD. However, a pre-purchase inspection is crucial to check for oil consumption issues and CVT transmission health. The Premium or Limited trims offer more desirable features compared to the base model. If AWD isn't a necessity, other rivals may offer better fuel economy, more advanced technology, and potentially lower long-term maintenance costs. Consider a newer model year if advanced driver-assistance features are a priority.

Set the scene: Two foot of snow on a Wisconsin road. Legacy rolling through it with snow coming over the hood like a pissed off snowmobile. Parked that Legacy in the garage. Popped the hood to see bottom of engine completely surrounded in sizzling snow. Closed hood and repeated this all season long with a giant smile on my face! Can't stop this car. Would buy this thing any day of the week for its AWD and power.

Best car I've ever purchased

Great handling, minimal maintenance. Good highway gas mileage. Easy to figure out all of the controls. Would definitely purchase another vehicle just like this one.

Safe, reliable car for my son

Perfect car for my son who is going to college and will have to commute daily to class/work. Very safe and very reilable but also a fun car for a young person. He loves the car and I know it is rated one of the safest cars on the road. Very happy with it so far.

Went back for another; great car

Excellent car offering high mpg for 4wd(symmetrical). Can?t beat a Subaru on this! Previously owned a Legacy GT and after many miles, went back for another, (minus the turbo).

Wish I could buy it.

It's stiff to drive but handles well and the interior is comfortable and feels good. I love it. I wish I could afford the vehicle.
