What Problems Does the 2006 Subaru Legacy Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2006 Subaru Legacy often revolve around head gasket failures, especially in the naturally aspirated (non-turbo) 2.5L engine. This issue can lead to coolant leaks, overheating, and expensive repairs. Turbocharged models are less prone to head gasket issues but can experience turbocharger problems as the car ages. Another common concern is rust, particularly in areas where road salt is used extensively. The automatic transmission can sometimes exhibit harsh shifting or premature failure.

Recalls for the 2006 Legacy may vary depending on the region and specific production date. It is crucial to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website or the Subaru website with the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) to identify any outstanding recalls. Long-term reliability concerns include potential oil leaks, particularly around the valve covers and rear differential. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and coolant flushes, is crucial to mitigate these risks and extend the vehicle's lifespan. Pre-purchase inspections are highly recommended to assess the overall condition and identify potential problems.

How long will the 2006 Subaru Legacy last?

With proper maintenance, a 2006 Subaru Legacy can realistically reach 200,000 miles or more and provide 15-20 years of service. However, longevity heavily depends on consistent upkeep. Neglecting oil changes, coolant flushes, and other essential maintenance can significantly shorten its lifespan. Long-term durability weaknesses include potential head gasket failure (especially in non-turbo models), rust, and wear on suspension components. Regularly addressing these issues as they arise will maximize the car's lifespan and minimize major breakdowns. Well-maintained examples can still be reliable daily drivers.

We absolutely love this car. It rides so smooth and has power when you need it. The styling is wonderful with some of the nicest stock rims I've ever seen. Inside is comparable to a luxury vehicle, beautiful leather and very nice little details here and there. Never been more excited to get in our car and go somewhere.

I love the style of this sedan. It?s sporty yet practical and gets pretty good gas mileage. Subaru makes a reliable car. Should last you 300,000 miles if you take care of it.
JMan
This car is just about perfect. Very comfortable and practical while at the same time very sport. I wish they made something similar these days.
Negative Owner Reviews
Legacy GT owner
I have had this car as an original owner. Just today, 2 months outside of the 5 year warranty I find out the Turbo has gone out. I have 46,000 miles on the car and have adhered to the factory maintenance schedule to a fault. What car, has an engine or turbo that lasts under 50,000 miles? Additionally, there have been no engine warning lights that have lit up. Just a strange noise that has slowly been increasing over the last month. Disgraceful. Don't buy this car.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2006 Subaru Legacy offers a range of built-in tech and safety features typical for its time. Entertainment features generally included a standard AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims offered upgraded audio systems, potentially with a CD changer or MP3 compatibility. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring available in this model year. Standard safety features included front airbags, side airbags (optional on some trims), anti-lock brakes (ABS), and all-wheel drive.

Optional features included a sunroof, leather upholstery, and automatic climate control. The 2.5 GT Spec.B featured performance-oriented upgrades like Bilstein suspension and a 6-speed manual transmission.

Crash test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) should be consulted for detailed safety performance. Generally, the 2006 Legacy performed well in crash tests for its era. Check these sources to get specific scores for frontal impact, side impact, and rollover protection. Remember that safety technology has advanced significantly since 2006; newer vehicles offer a broader range of safety features.

2006 Subaru Legacy Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2006 Subaru Legacy ranged from approximately $19,000 for the base 2.5i to around $30,000 for the top-of-the-line 2.5 GT Spec.B. Current used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. Depreciation has been significant, as with most vehicles of this age. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition (especially rust), maintenance history, and trim level. Turbocharged models and Spec.B versions often command a higher price due to their performance capabilities. A clean title and comprehensive service records positively impact resale value.

2006 Subaru Legacy Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2006 Subaru Legacy are generally moderate. Fuel costs depend on driving habits and engine type, with the turbocharged models consuming more fuel. Maintenance can be moderate, but potential head gasket issues can lead to expensive repairs. Overall, while not the most economical, the 2006 Legacy is reasonably priced to own, provided major repairs are avoided with preventative maintenance. Budgeting for potential repairs is advisable, especially for high-mileage examples. Rust repair can also add to the total cost of ownership in certain climates.

2006 Subaru Legacy Insurance

Insurance for a 2006 Subaru Legacy is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2006 Subaru Legacy Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2006 Subaru Legacy competed with vehicles like the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Mazda 6, and Volkswagen Passat. The Legacy's main advantage was its standard all-wheel drive, a feature not commonly found in its rivals. In terms of reliability, the Accord and Camry generally had a stronger reputation. The Mazda 6 offered sportier handling, while the Passat provided a more refined interior.

Feature-wise, the Legacy was competitive, though some rivals offered more advanced technology. Pricewise, the Legacy was often similarly priced or slightly more expensive than the base models of its competitors, but the inclusion of AWD added value for buyers needing all-weather capability.

Alternatives to the 2006 Subaru Legacy include the Acura TSX (for a more luxurious and sporty experience), the Mazda 6 (for better handling), or the Toyota Camry (for superior reliability). A Subaru Outback of similar vintage could also be considered for increased cargo capacity. If AWD is not a primary concern, the Accord and Camry are often considered more reliable and economical choices.

Final Verdict: Is the 2006 Subaru Legacy a Good Sedan?

The 2006 Subaru Legacy is ideal for those needing all-wheel drive for confident handling in various weather conditions. It's worth buying used if you find a well-maintained example with a clean history and no signs of head gasket issues or rust. Turbocharged models offer a more engaging driving experience, but they require more maintenance. A pre-purchase inspection is crucial. Consider models with complete service records. If AWD isn't a necessity, more reliable alternatives like the Honda Accord or Toyota Camry might be a better choice. The Spec.B trim is desirable for enthusiasts, but parts can be harder to find.

Best so called soccer mom style car ever!

This car is the top 5 of my 60th vehicle owned, it handles very well and travels through almost every terrain I can encounter in ohio! And in all 4.5 seasons ohio has to offer.

Notorious for blowing a headgasket at around 100k

I really liked this car for handling and having no fear of winter, but unfortunately I really didn't like its accelerator pedal, which was electronic and featured a delay between driver input (push) and the engine reacting to it (go). The other problem with these cars are blowing the head gasket. Mine did it at 100k. You'll know when it happens, because you will get a persistent check engine light about the car running too lean and also lacking power. Either get rid of the car or start to get ready for an expensive repair way before it happens because it will. Also every single Subaru up to today features the same engine and have the same "feature" of blowing the gasket, just saying.

Fun sporty family sedan

This has been a fun weekend car. Upgraded to stage 2 components that really brought the car to life with a good professional tune. Stock the vehicle is a nice sporty 4 door sedan that will get you a to b with a smile on your face. Wish they still made a legacy turbo with a manual.

Fun, sporty, reliable, sport sedan

This car has been a blast to drive and always gets me where I want to go without issues. The 2.5L turbo engine has plenty of go and there are various aftermarket parts available if you want to make it even faster. The AWD is great coming from FWD vehicles. The interior is fantastic, it's a more grown up version of the wrx. All in all I have been very happy with this vehicle and really wish subaru still made a legacy with a turbo.
