Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2007 Subaru Legacy is a mid-size sedan and wagon that's part of the fourth generation (2003-2009). Key trims included the 2.5i, 2.5GT, and the sporty Spec.B. Known for its standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD), the Legacy provided enhanced traction and handling, making it a popular choice for drivers in regions with inclement weather. The original MSRP ranged approximately from $19,000 to $34,000 depending on trim and options. Its reliable AWD system sets it apart.
The Good

The 2007 Subaru Legacy offers a blend of practicality and driving enjoyment. Its AWD system provides enhanced safety and confidence in all weather conditions (practical). The 2.5GT offered turbocharged performance appealing to enthusiasts (emotional). It's known for reliability and comfortable ride. Value is found in its competitive price point and long-term dependability.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2007 Subaru Legacy include possible head gasket issues in the 2.5i engine. Turbocharged models (2.5GT) may experience turbocharger problems with age and mileage. What Problems Does the 2007 Subaru Legacy Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2007 Subaru Legacy often revolve around the engine and transmission. The 2.5i engine is known for potential head gasket failures, which can lead to coolant leaks and overheating. This issue isn't exclusive to 2007 but is a common Subaru problem of that era. Turbocharged 2.5GT models can experience turbocharger issues, especially as the car ages. Symptoms include decreased power, unusual noises, and excessive oil consumption. Some owners have reported problems with the automatic transmission, including rough shifting or slipping gears. Rust, particularly in areas with heavy road salt use, is another common concern.

Recalls for the 2007 Subaru Legacy have addressed issues like potential fuel leakage due to faulty fuel pump brackets and issues with the brake light switch. These are important to check to ensure the vehicle has had the necessary repairs completed. Long-term reliability concerns include the durability of the interior plastics and the longevity of certain electronic components. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and coolant flushes, is crucial for mitigating potential problems and extending the lifespan of the vehicle.

How long will the 2007 Subaru Legacy last?

A well-maintained 2007 Subaru Legacy can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. With regular servicing and preventative maintenance, many owners report lifespans exceeding 15 years. Proper maintenance habits are key; oil changes, coolant flushes, and timing belt replacements are crucial. However, as these vehicles age, expect increased maintenance needs. Common long-term durability weaknesses include potential head gasket issues (especially in the 2.5i), turbocharger problems in the 2.5GT, and general wear and tear on suspension components and interior materials. Rust is another factor that can significantly impact longevity.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2007 Subaru Legacy offered a reasonable array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard entertainment features included a CD player and an auxiliary audio input. Higher trims featured upgraded audio systems with more speakers. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring available on this model year. Safety features included standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), front airbags, and side-impact airbags. Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC), Subaru's electronic stability control system, was available on some trims, like the Spec.B.

Optional features included a sunroof, leather upholstery, and a navigation system (available on higher trims). The 2007 Subaru Legacy received generally good crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). Specifically, it earned "Good" ratings in frontal offset and side impact tests from the IIHS. NHTSA gave it four or five stars in frontal and side crash tests depending on the specific test. These scores reflect the vehicle's ability to protect occupants in the event of a collision. Keep in mind that safety technology has significantly advanced since 2007.

2007 Subaru Legacy Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2007 Subaru Legacy had an MSRP ranging from approximately $19,000 to $34,000, depending on the trim level and options. On today's used market, prices typically range from $3,000 to $8,000 or higher, depending on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation has been significant, as expected for a vehicle of this age. Factors affecting resale value include the car's overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, and trim level. Models with lower mileage and a documented service history command higher prices. The presence of rust or mechanical issues will negatively impact the value. The desirable Spec.B trim tends to hold its value better than other trims due to its rarity and performance features.

2007 Subaru Legacy Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2007 Subaru Legacy are typically moderate, depending on driving record and location. Fuel costs are average for a mid-size sedan. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average, particularly if head gasket issues or turbocharger problems arise. The AWD system also adds to maintenance expenses. While the initial purchase price is low, long-term ownership costs can be moderate to high depending on the car's condition and maintenance needs. It's not the most economical choice compared to some competitors.

2007 Subaru Legacy Insurance

Insurance for a 2007 Subaru Legacy is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2007 Subaru Legacy Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2007 Subaru Legacy competed with mid-size sedans like the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Mazda6, and Nissan Altima. In terms of performance, the Legacy 2.5GT offered a turbocharged advantage that some rivals lacked, although the Mazda6 s V6 was comparable. Features were generally on par, although some competitors offered more advanced tech options at the time. Reliability is a mixed bag; the Accord and Camry are generally considered more reliable overall, while the Legacy is more prone to head gasket issues. Price-wise, the Legacy was often competitive, particularly given its standard AWD.

Alternatives to the 2007 Subaru Legacy include: a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry for superior reliability, a Mazda6 for a sportier driving experience without AWD, or a Subaru Outback for similar AWD capability with more cargo space. If AWD is not a necessity, the Accord and Camry represent strong choices for long-term dependability. The Mazda6 offers a compelling alternative if driving enjoyment is a priority. However, for those specifically seeking AWD in this price range, the Legacy remains a decent option if carefully inspected and maintained.

Final Verdict: Is the 2007 Subaru Legacy a Good Vehicle?

The 2007 Subaru Legacy is a decent used car option for buyers seeking affordable AWD, especially in regions with snow or rain. It's ideal for those who value a comfortable ride and appreciate Subaru's unique driving feel. However, it's essential to have a pre-purchase inspection to check for potential head gasket issues (2.5i) or turbocharger problems (2.5GT). It's worth buying *if* the car has been well-maintained, has a clean title, and the price reflects its age and condition. The Spec.B is desirable, but commands a premium. Newer alternatives might offer better reliability and updated features, but at a higher price point. Avoid neglected or abused examples.

Best Well Balanced Car I've Owned

When I say I needed a well balanced car with power, AWD, and not spporting a "give me a ticket" fin or look....I thought it was mission impossible. Then I stumbled on the Gold that is the specb. No fin. Looks like a regular legacy. Runs smooth, great for road trips. Excellent AWD in the mud or snow. But wait....It's fast as hell and has a 6 speed manual. Turbo kicks in and can beat a WRX with some tuning. Wow....All I could have hoped for!

Very reliable and dependable car.

I really liked the Subaru, it handled nicely, rode smoothly, lasted me a long time. Well worth the money. I did not especially like the low profile tires, made the car sit low, which made it hard for some to get in and out of.
