The 2015 Subaru Legacy is a mid-size sedan offering all-wheel drive as standard, a rarity in its class. This sixth-generation Legacy (2015-2019) features a roomy interior and comfortable ride. Key trims include the base, Premium, Sport, and Limited. New, it ranged roughly from $22,000 to $30,000. Its popularity stems from its AWD capability, reliability, and Subaru's strong safety reputation.
The Good

The 2015 Subaru Legacy offers all-weather confidence with its standard AWD (emotional: peace of mind). It's known for its reliability and comfortable ride (practical: low running costs, enjoyable journeys). Fuel efficiency is respectable for an AWD vehicle. It presents good value for money, being a practical and safe family sedan.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2015 Subaru Legacy include its somewhat bland styling and potentially underwhelming base engine performance. The CVT transmission can feel sluggish at times. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system. Watch out for excessive oil consumption, a recurring Subaru concern.

What Problems Does the 2015 Subaru Legacy Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2015 Subaru Legacy often revolve around the infotainment system, with complaints of slow response times, freezing, and Bluetooth connectivity issues. Some owners have also reported concerns about the CVT transmission, including hesitation and a feeling of sluggishness, although significant failures are not widespread. Excessive oil consumption has been a known issue with some Subaru engines, and while not universally reported for the 2015 Legacy, it's worth monitoring. Recalls have included issues related to the brake light switch and the electronic parking brake system. Long-term reliability is generally considered good, but addressing potential oil consumption and CVT maintenance are key to longevity. Prior model years (e.g., 2013-2014) also had reported oil consumption concerns, so checking service records and performing a pre-purchase inspection are essential. Some owners reported windshield cracking issues due to minor impacts.

How long will the 2015 Subaru Legacy last?

With good maintenance habits, a 2015 Subaru Legacy can easily reach 200,000 miles or more, translating to 10-15 years of service. Proper oil changes, CVT fluid maintenance, and regular inspections are crucial. Long-term durability is generally a strong point, but weaknesses include potential oil consumption issues in some engines. The CVT transmission's long-term reliability depends heavily on maintenance. Rust can also become a factor in colder climates with road salt. Watch for suspension component wear as the car ages. Preventative maintenance is critical to maximizing lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2015 Subaru Legacy offered a reasonable suite of built-in tech for its time. Base models featured a 6.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity and a rearview camera. Higher trims (Premium and above) upgraded to a 7-inch touchscreen with Subaru Starlink connected services, which included features like automatic collision notification and stolen vehicle recovery. Entertainment options included a standard four-speaker audio system, with upgrades to a Harman Kardon system in the Limited trim. Driver-assistance features, such as blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, were available on the Limited trim. Subaru's EyeSight system, which included adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and pre-collision braking, was an optional upgrade. Safety features included standard anti-lock brakes, stability control, and a full complement of airbags. The 2015 Subaru Legacy received excellent crash-test ratings from both the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), earning a 5-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS (when equipped with EyeSight). The infotainment system, while functional, wasn't the most intuitive or responsive compared to competitors.

2015 Subaru Legacy Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2015 Subaru Legacy ranged from approximately $22,000 to $30,000, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $15,000, influenced by mileage, condition, and location. Depreciation has been moderate, reflecting Subaru's reputation for reliability and retained value. Factors affecting resale value include the car's maintenance history, accident record, and the presence of desirable features like EyeSight or the Harman Kardon audio system. Lower mileage examples in excellent condition command higher prices. All-wheel drive remains a significant selling point, especially in regions with harsh weather.

2015 Subaru Legacy Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2015 Subaru Legacy are generally moderate, reflecting its safety ratings and target demographic. Fuel costs are reasonable, particularly with the 2.5L engine. Maintenance costs are average, but Subaru-specific parts can sometimes be pricier. Repair costs can be higher if the CVT transmission requires service. Long-term ownership costs are generally economical, due to the car's reliability, but addressing potential oil consumption is key. Overall, it is a relatively affordable vehicle to own.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2015 Subaru Legacy Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2015 Subaru Legacy competes with the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, and Mazda 6. In terms of performance, the Legacy's base engine is less powerful than some rivals, but the 3.6L engine offers competitive acceleration. Its standard AWD is a major advantage over competitors. Feature-wise, the Legacy is generally well-equipped, but some rivals offer more advanced infotainment systems. Reliability is a Subaru strong point, on par with Toyota and Honda. Price-wise, the Legacy is competitive, especially when considering the included AWD. The Toyota Camry offers superior reliability and a smoother ride. The Honda Accord boasts a more engaging driving experience. The Ford Fusion provides more stylish design options. The Mazda 6 offers sharper handling and a more premium interior. A similar alternative with available AWD (though not standard) is the Ford Fusion. Ultimately, the Legacy is a solid choice for those prioritizing AWD capability and reliability at a reasonable price point, but the alternatives offer strengths in other areas depending on individual needs and preferences.

Final Verdict: Is the 2015 Subaru Legacy a Good Sedan?

The 2015 Subaru Legacy is ideal for buyers seeking a reliable and safe mid-size sedan with all-weather capability thanks to its standard AWD. It's a good choice for those living in areas with snow or rain. Whether it's worth buying depends on the price and condition. A well-maintained used model, especially a Premium or Limited trim with the EyeSight system, offers excellent value. Avoid models with a history of excessive oil consumption or neglected CVT maintenance. It's a practical and dependable choice, but buyers should be aware of potential infotainment quirks and ensure proper maintenance has been performed. If AWD is not a priority, other sedans might offer more engaging driving dynamics or more advanced features.

Checks all the boxes!

My husband initially gave a lot of pushback when I told him this was "the car for me". His car broke down just before a planned long-distance trip, so he had to take his turn behind the wheel of my Subaru. Every wife loves to hear " You were right"! It handled ice, snow and everything else with ease plus great MPG!

Good car minus reliability

Bought the premium 2.5i, car is about the biggest I would get. Comfortable ride although the shocks are certainly underdamped where it bounces 1.5 times after going over a bump (only has 45k miles on it). Acceleration... is not a priority. Best and system I have ever owned though, had a lancer awc and this awd + underdamped suspension is amazing on the snow. Unfortunately the reliability Is something I would question. Wheel bearing at 23k, 2 cv joints at 36, engine guzzles oil but needs to guzzle a quart every 6k in order to fail consumption test, alignment is perfect but getting uneven tire wear possibly due to bad ball joints. I hope Subaru steps their game back up, they used to be amazing but I now have a '19 Impreza so we will see.

Preforms well

Would like more clearance on front bumper as it hangs up on parking barriers and curbs. Would like more adjustable seatbelt as it goes across my neck.
