Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2010 Subaru Legacy marked the fifth generation of Subaru's mid-size sedan. Available as a 4-door sedan, it offered all-wheel drive as standard. Key trims included the 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, 2.5GT, and 3.6R. Pricing ranged from approximately $20,000 to $30,000 when new. Its standard AWD, reliability, and practicality made it a popular choice, especially in regions with challenging weather conditions.
The Good

The 2010 Subaru Legacy offered a balanced package. Practically, it boasted Subaru's renowned reliability and standard all-wheel drive for confident handling in all weather. Emotionally, it provided a comfortable ride and a subtly sporty feel, particularly in the GT trim. Value-wise, it presented a competitive price point for its features.

The Bad

The 2010 Subaru Legacy had some known weaknesses. The base 2.5i engine could feel underpowered, and some owners reported issues with excessive oil consumption. The continuously variable transmission (CVT), while improving fuel economy, wasn't universally loved for its driving feel. Also, interior plastics could feel cheap for some buyers.

What Problems Does the 2010 Subaru Legacy Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2010 Subaru Legacy include excessive oil consumption in the 2.5i engine. Some owners reported needing to add oil frequently between oil changes. This issue was more prevalent in earlier model years of this generation. Another common complaint involved the continuously variable transmission (CVT), with some owners experiencing jerky or hesitant performance. While not as widespread, some reports surfaced regarding issues with the air conditioning system and the infotainment system.
There were recalls issued for the 2010 Subaru Legacy, primarily related to potential fuel leaks and brake line corrosion. It's essential to check the vehicle's VIN with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to determine if all applicable recalls have been addressed.
Long-term reliability concerns mostly revolve around the aforementioned oil consumption issue and potential CVT problems. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and CVT fluid replacements, is crucial for mitigating these risks. Overall, the 2010 Legacy is generally considered reliable, but these specific issues should be carefully inspected when considering a used purchase.

How long will the 2010 Subaru Legacy last?

With proper maintenance, a 2010 Subaru Legacy can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding this mileage with regular servicing and addressing issues promptly. The longevity largely depends on maintenance habits. Neglecting oil changes or ignoring warning signs can significantly shorten its lifespan. The most significant long-term durability concern remains the potential for excessive oil consumption in the 2.5i engine. Rust can also become a factor in regions with harsh winters and road salt usage. Addressing these issues proactively is key to maximizing the vehicle's lifespan.

Vehicle met my our needs and was very reliable. It lacked some comforts interior wise but very mechanically sound and very sould car. Saftey of the car waa unlike anybcar ive owned. I got tboned Christmas eve while on leave from the military and the car hadnt been totaled. Which to me prves its cash rating and the car had over 180k and there was 7k in damage. We drove the car till about 220k and it ran perfect up untill the day we sold it. Snow was no therat is the legacy either. We would pass trucks stuck on hills and even pulled one guy out of a snow bank who had been driving a truck himself and saod man thats one seeious awd. We only got rid of it buy buy an suv because my wofe and i had our second child. Now im addicted to Subarus and wont drive any thing else. I currenlty have a 2015 Legacy 3.6r and a large Acadia for the family.

Long lasting car!!! Love it!!! I would definitely buy another Subaru in the future. I had 3 different types of car so far the best
Megadave
If I was a cat, this car would be my Meow. I have never owned a Subaru and I have never had power windows, doors, or anything powered. Not only is this car filled to the max, with power, but it has luxury, like it is going out of style. Today, I feel like a new man.
Negative Owner Reviews

My mother (63 years old) bought a Subaru and it had consistent problems. The eletrical wires needed to be replaced with no success. A break pad even feel out of the car. And after 8 years of easy driving and regular maintenance. The engine is totalled. An 8 year old car and it's no better then scrap metal. Subaru offered $1,000 discount towards a new subrau. Who would ever buy another car from this company after what my mother went through. Subarus are xxx never buy a Subaru unless. You want to throw your money away.
Tigerdriver
As a supplier to the Subaru plant in Lafayette, IN, I was excited to order a new Legacy. I had always heard good things about Subarus as long as you could deal with the quirky styling. I must say though that with 36,000 miles on the clock, I am rather disappointed with this car. I love the AWD, especially with the amount of snow we've seen this winter and the premium stereo sounds great. On the down side, the car has been back to the shop 5 times since new, the trunk is tiny and any kind of significant cross wind makes the car jump all over the road. I actually plan to attend the Chicago Auto Show next week to pick out a replacement. The maintenance issues make me leery of keeping this vehicle too much longer. I don't have time to waste sitting in the dealer's wating room.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2010 Subaru Legacy offered a decent array of built-in tech and safety features for its time. Standard entertainment features included a CD player, auxiliary input jack, and four speakers. Higher trims offered upgraded audio systems with features like Bluetooth connectivity and satellite radio. Navigation was available as an optional feature on some trims.
Driver-assistance features were relatively limited compared to modern vehicles. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC) were standard. Driver-assistance features such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring were unavailable.
Safety features included front, side, and side curtain airbags.
Crash-test ratings for the 2010 Subaru Legacy were generally good. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded it a "Top Safety Pick" rating. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) also gave it good overall safety ratings. Specific scores varied depending on the type of crash test, but the Legacy consistently performed well in both IIHS and NHTSA evaluations. Overall, its safety features were competitive for its class and model year, earning it positive reviews from safety organizations.

2010 Subaru Legacy Prices and Market Value

The 2010 Subaru Legacy had a starting MSRP of around $20,000 when new, with higher trims reaching up to $30,000. As of late 2023, used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $12,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Legacy has depreciated significantly over time, which is typical for vehicles of this age. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, maintenance history, mileage, and geographic location. Models with lower mileage and a clean maintenance record command higher prices. The presence of desirable features like leather upholstery or the turbocharged engine can also positively impact resale value.

2010 Subaru Legacy Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2010 Subaru Legacy are generally moderate, comparable to other mid-size sedans. Fuel costs depend on the engine and driving habits, with the 2.5i being the most economical. Maintenance costs are average, but potential repairs, especially related to oil consumption or the CVT, can increase expenses. Overall, the Legacy isn't exceptionally cheap to own but isn't overly costly either. Budgeting for potential repairs is advisable, especially for higher-mileage examples. Long-term ownership costs are heavily influenced by maintenance and repair needs.

2010 Subaru Legacy Insurance

Insurance for a 2010 Subaru Legacy is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2010 Subaru Legacy Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2010 Subaru Legacy competed against the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, and Mazda6. Compared to the Camry and Accord, the Legacy offered standard all-wheel drive, a unique selling point. The Camry and Accord were generally considered more reliable, though. The Ford Fusion provided similar fuel economy but lacked standard AWD. The Mazda6 offered a sportier driving experience, but its reliability wasn't as strong as the Toyota or Honda.
In terms of features, the Legacy was generally competitive, although some rivals offered more advanced technology options. The 2.5GT trim provided better performance than most base models from competitors. However, its fuel economy suffered compared to the base engines of its rivals.
Alternatives to the 2010 Subaru Legacy include the Toyota Camry for superior reliability, the Honda Accord for a well-rounded package, or a Mazda6 if you prioritize driving enjoyment. If AWD is a necessity, consider an older Audi A4 or Volvo S60, but be prepared for potentially higher maintenance costs. Overall the Legacy provides a unique offering with its standard AWD at a decent price.

Final Verdict: Is the 2010 Subaru Legacy a Good Sedan?

The 2010 Subaru Legacy is ideal for buyers seeking a reliable mid-size sedan with standard all-wheel drive, especially those living in areas with snow or inclement weather. It's worth buying as a used vehicle if a thorough inspection reveals no major issues, particularly regarding oil consumption or CVT performance. The 2.5i Premium or Limited trims offer a good balance of features and value. The 2.5GT provides more engaging performance. Avoid neglected examples or those with questionable maintenance histories. If you prioritize ultimate reliability above all else, consider a Toyota Camry instead. Overall, a well-maintained 2010 Subaru Legacy can be a practical and dependable choice.

Great 2010 legacy, would buy again.

I bought a 2010 legacy, with 209,000 on it and I've taken it on a couple of trips for over 5 hours a piece and it's a reliable and sturdy car, love the design as well, love subarus and I'm from Vermont so I consider AWD essential, doesn't ride like a tin can, would buy another one for sure.

Very driver friendly car

This is a nice driving subaru of the subaru family.. this being my 11th used Subaru I'm familiar with subabilities, and I was skeptic about the CVT drivetrain, and their 1st generation problems, but just turning 11yrs old and 205k she just goes gracefully down the road, and that's whatever road you choose to drive!

The 2010 Subaru Legacy is a great car. Sporty, fun to drive, and reliable. The All Wheel drive is great in the snow as well!

Very reliable

Most Reliable Car I've Ever Owned

This car has been dependable, great in all weather, and still looks fantastic 9 years and 155k miles later. Excellent investment that requires very little maintenance. Still getting great mileage with the CVT transmission. Couldn't be happier!

Lov'n This Car

If I was a cat, this car would be my Meow. I have never owned a Subaru and I have never had power windows, doors, or anything powered. Not only is this car filled to the max, with power, but it has luxury, like it is going out of style. Today, I feel like a new man.

Love the vehicle but have had to put 8 low beam bt

Love the vehicle other than having to put 8 low beam bulbs in it over the last nine years. This task is very difficult to do and expensive to have a mechanic do. This is such an issue it almost would make me not want the vehicle

Never buy a Subaru, they don't last.

Reliable and very comfortable ride

This car is a great sedan for cruising. It has a very comfortable ride. Mine is a 2010 model and the only I would want is updated technology in bluetooth and HD radio. Regardless, I travel around my state a lot for work and find it meets all my needs.
