The Good
The 1999 Miata excels in driving performance with its nimble handling and responsive steering. It's renowned for its reliability, simple design, and fuel efficiency. The classic roadster design evokes emotional enjoyment, while its affordable price and low running costs appeal to practical buyers seeking a fun, dependable car.
The Bad
The 1999 Miata's weaknesses include limited storage space and a somewhat cramped interior, especially for taller drivers. Rust can be an issue, particularly in areas with road salt. The soft top is susceptible to wear and tear and may require replacement. Watch out for oil leaks and ensure proper maintenance records.

Analysis
What Problems Does the 1999 Mazda MX-5 Miata Have?
Long-term reliability concerns include the condition of the cooling system components, such as the radiator and hoses, which can become brittle and prone to failure with age. The original clutch may also need replacement after many years of service. Some owners have reported issues with the window regulators.
Recalls for the 1999 MX-5 Miata were relatively limited, but it's important to check the NHTSA website for any outstanding safety recalls. While the Miata is generally reliable, proper maintenance is crucial to prevent or mitigate these issues. Regular inspections, rustproofing (especially in susceptible areas), and timely replacement of worn parts are essential for long-term ownership.
How long will the 1999 Mazda MX-5 Miata last?
Long-term durability hinges on consistent upkeep: regular oil changes, cooling system maintenance, and addressing rust promptly. Weaknesses over time include potential for increased oil consumption as piston rings wear, suspension component degradation leading to diminished handling, and the aforementioned rust and soft-top issues. Careful owners who garage their Miata and address issues promptly can significantly extend its lifespan.
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Optional features often included air conditioning, power windows, and power mirrors. Some models had a removable hardtop, which added to the car's versatility and security.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) for the 1999 MX-5 Miata were generally acceptable for its class, though not exceptional. It received ratings in frontal and side-impact tests. The small size of the vehicle inherently offers less crash protection compared to larger cars. Because of its age, directly comparing these ratings to modern vehicles isn't entirely relevant due to advancements in safety technology.

How Does the 1999 Mazda MX-5 Miata Compare to Other Sedan?
Alternatives might include a used Toyota MR2 Spyder (later years) for similar handling characteristics, though it can be more challenging to drive at the limit. The Fiat 124 Spider (modern) offers a similar experience but with more modern features, however its reliability is not as proven. The original Honda S2000 offers far superior performance but comes at a higher price and potential maintenance cost. The 1999 Miata remains a compelling choice for its balance of fun, reliability, and affordability. Depending on priorities, the others could be better or similar alternatives.

Fun, reliable, dependable, easy to work onReally an amazing car. Mazda just hit the mark for a fun to drive roadster without requiring sacrifice in terms of longevity, reliability or dependability. The handling is balanced and forgiving, while maintaining a reasonably comfortable ride. It has enough power and though it won't win a stoplight drag race it will embarrass much more powerful cars on a twisty road.

Love the car!Perfect Car. Great price too. We couldn't have been happier! Thank you Fitz Automart and team under Jeff S. Most likely we will return for future Mazdas. This is our first Mazda.

Fun Fun FunThe most fun reliable convertible ever. This car is meant to be driven with the top down. This is not an ideal daily driver. It is noisy with the top up. It’s for partly sunny 77 degree days. Got it? Good....

It claws the road.Fun drive. Small trunk. Enjoyable ride always. Mine was broken into twice with a cut through the top. I finally sold it, because the interior window fogging became dangerous.

One of the best I have ownedThe car handling is amazing, and this generation looks similar to RX7 FD, it looks cool also drive cool. And it is very reliable car for sure, the part is cheap so it won't take too much money to own one.

Fun to drive; lots of complimentsGreat car! Fun to drive and people in other cars or walking by constantly complimenting the car. Other Miata owners often honk when we pass. Only the 10th Anniversary Edition for me

Best car I've owned!I've owned this car for eleven years and am selling because I bought a 2014 Miata. I've had no complications with this car in all of this time and I've put 75,000 miles on her! Edmunds says the 1999 is one of the best years for Miatas. It's been so much fun, the way it hugs the road, the way it looks like it's moving when it's sitting still... I have loved every minute of owning this car.
