The Mazda MX-5 Miata, a modern reincarnation of the classic British roadster, debuted in 1989. The 2012 model belongs to the third generation (NC). It's a two-door convertible with a focus on driving fun. Key trims include the base model, Touring, Grand Touring, and Special Edition. Pricing ranged from approximately $23,000 to $30,000 when new. The Miata's popularity stems from its light weight, nimble handling, affordable price, and open-top experience.
The Good

The 2012 MX-5 Miata boasts engaging performance, offering a sporty and connected driving experience. Its renowned reliability and decent fuel efficiency appeal to practical buyers. The car's iconic design and open-top thrills provide an emotional connection, while its affordability makes it a value-packed sports car. Comfort is adequate for shorter trips.

The Bad

The 2012 MX-5 Miata's weaknesses include limited cargo space and a somewhat cramped interior, especially for taller drivers. The ride can be firm, and road noise is noticeable. Pre-purchase inspections should check for rust, particularly in areas prone to moisture. Also, verify proper operation of the convertible top mechanism, and look for oil leaks.

What Problems Does the 2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata Have?

The 2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata is generally considered reliable, but certain issues have been reported. Rust can be a concern, especially in areas with salted roads. Inspect the rocker panels, wheel wells, and undercarriage. Some owners have reported issues with the soft top, including leaks or difficulty in operation. Check the top's condition and ensure it functions smoothly. Oil leaks, particularly from the valve cover gasket, can occur. Listen for any unusual noises from the engine or transmission during a test drive. Earlier NC generation Miatas (2006-2008) had some reports of clutch failures, but this was less prevalent in later model years like 2012. Recalls for the 2012 MX-5 Miata have been relatively minor, often related to software updates or minor component replacements. It's always advisable to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the latest recall information based on the VIN. Overall, with proper maintenance, the 2012 MX-5 Miata is a durable vehicle, but addressing potential rust and maintaining the soft top are crucial for long-term reliability. Regular oil changes are also paramount to prevent engine issues.

How long will the 2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata last?

A well-maintained 2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata can easily reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. With regular maintenance and responsible driving, expect at least 10-15 years of service. Long-term durability is generally good, but rust prevention is essential, especially in colder climates. The soft top's condition will degrade over time, requiring potential replacement. Suspension components may need attention as the car ages. Regular fluid checks and timely maintenance are key to maximizing the vehicle's lifespan. Ignoring rust will significantly shorten its lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata's technology is relatively basic by today's standards. The base model features a simple audio system with CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims like the Touring and Grand Touring offer upgraded Bose audio systems. Navigation was available as an optional feature on some trims.

Driver-assistance features are limited. It does not have modern features like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning. Safety features include standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), and stability control. Dual front airbags are standard. Side airbags were available on higher trims.

Crash test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA provide some insight into its safety performance. The 2012 MX-5 Miata received good ratings in some IIHS tests but lower ratings in others, due to its small size. NHTSA ratings are more limited. The lack of advanced safety features is a notable drawback compared to newer vehicles. Overall, the 2012 MX-5 Miata prioritizes the driving experience over cutting-edge technology and driver assistance. The focus is on the connection between driver and machine, rather than automated assistance.

2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata had an MSRP ranging from approximately $23,000 to $30,000, depending on the trim level and options. As of late 2024, used market prices generally range from $8,000 to $18,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. Miatas tend to hold their value relatively well, especially those in good condition with low mileage. Factors affecting resale value include condition, maintenance history, mileage, trim level (Grand Touring and Special Editions command higher prices), and geographic location. Rust-free examples are particularly desirable.

2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata Cost of Ownership

The 2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata is relatively economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel economy is decent for a sports car. Maintenance is generally straightforward and affordable. Parts are readily available and reasonably priced. Repair costs are usually lower than those of European sports cars. Long-term ownership costs are manageable, making it a budget-friendly sports car choice, particularly if preventive maintenance is prioritized and rust is prevented.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata Compare to Other Convertible?

The 2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata competes with other small roadsters and sporty coupes. Compared to the Fiat 124 Spider (a later model, based on the ND Miata), the MX-5 offers a more direct and engaging driving experience. The Fiat 124 Spider has a turbocharged engine, which provides a different power delivery. The BMW Z4 (earlier generations) offers more luxury and power but comes at a higher price and with potentially higher maintenance costs.

The Honda S2000, though out of production by 2012, is a comparable used alternative. The S2000 delivers higher performance but may require more careful maintenance due to its age and high-revving engine. The Nissan 370Z Roadster provides more power and a more aggressive look, but it's heavier and less nimble than the Miata. For those prioritizing pure driving fun and affordability, the MX-5 is often the better choice. If luxury and power are more important, the BMW Z4 might be considered, but be prepared for higher running costs. The Fiat 124 spider offers similar fun but with a turbo engine and Italian styling. Overall, for a balance of fun, reliability, and affordability, the Miata remains a top pick.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata a Good Convertible?

The 2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata is ideal for driving enthusiasts who value a fun, engaging, and affordable roadster experience. It's a worthwhile purchase, especially as a used vehicle, offering a great bang for your buck. A well-maintained Grand Touring or Special Edition trim provides a good balance of features and value. Look for examples with comprehensive service records and minimal rust. Consider a pre-purchase inspection to ensure the soft top and mechanical components are in good condition. If you prioritize practicality and space, this isn't the car for you. However, if you seek pure driving pleasure, the 2012 MX-5 Miata is an excellent choice.

A fun car to drive....when you need it fast too

You can adjust the seats. Heated seats are nice and the sound system sounds good for its Dolby system. Can't beat the design or its performance.

Most reliable and fun car I ever owned.

The 2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata is a wonderful car. 100% reliable. In the eighth years I've owned this car, I have never had any kind of mechanical problem whatsoever. 100% fun to drive. Makes going out for a quart of milk a fun experience. Power Retractable Hard Top is a simple and very convenient feature. Great sports car. Nothing beats it in this price range.

Best value for a fun roadster!

This is my third Miata and I can't help but smile everytime I drive it! I have previously owned a 1999 and a 2008 model. They were both great vehicles. I currently own a 2012 hard top convertible and it's my favorite Miata. Every chance I get, I have the top down. With a press of a button I can have the top down for some open air fun. The car is so nimble and quick that you enjoy the driving experience. The car responds to the driver and provides plenty of feedback to enhance your driving experience. I have had no issues with the vehicle. All you have to do is change the oil and go for a fun drive. All my Miatas have been great weekend vehicles and the 2012 hard top is by far my favorite. Test drive one and you will smile from the experience!

Best convertible I've ever had...in over 31 years!

The Miata is simply the car that brings the most fun for your dollar...ever! I wouldn't sell except I'm getting a new one - a 30th Anniversary Special Edition. It's my fun car and daily driver in one...as long as there's less than 2" of snow on the ground. Sunny and 60° + will find me with the top down.

The most fun you can have in a car.

Power Retractable Hardtop is up or down in 12 seconds. Handles great especially on roads with plenty of sharp curves. Balanced perfectly with just the power you need to have a blast.

Fun ride +HTC

A hard top convertible with 13 second roof drop time is pretty cool all by itself, but make it a Miata and it goes beyond cool to just plain fun.

First sports car I have owned!

Fun to drive with or without the top down! 6 speed automatic transmission adds to the stopping and starting in traffic. The overdrive increases the gas mileage! Just a total fun car!!

Fast and fun to drive

very cute car I get plenty of compliments when I go out with the top down. Really fun to drive just small interior and no decent cup holders are the only draw back that I can think of. Not made for a large person or tall person. I am just the right size at 5'3'. Love driving on cool mornings or evenings. Haven't had during winter so don't know how warm the cloth top will be when it turns cold.
