The Good
The 2002 Miata offers a thrilling driving experience due to its balanced handling and responsive engine (emotional). It's also known for its reliability and relatively low running costs (practical). The simple, attractive design is timeless. Fuel efficiency is good, and the initial purchase price and used market values are very attractive, offering excellent value.
The Bad
The 2002 Miata's weaknesses include limited storage space and a small cabin, which can be uncomfortable for taller drivers. The soft top can be vulnerable to wear and tear. Rust, particularly in areas with road salt, is a concern to watch out for. Also, check the condition of the original suspension components.

Analysis
What Problems Does the 2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata Have?
Other reported problems include: oil leaks (valve cover gasket, rear main seal), occasional electrical issues (window motors, sensor failures), and clutch wear (especially in models driven aggressively). Radiator leaks and cooling system component failures can occur as the car ages. While the 2002 model year wasn't subject to any major, widespread recalls, it's always advisable to check the NHTSA website (safercar.gov) for any updates or specific recalls related to the vehicle's VIN. Long-term reliability is generally good with proper maintenance, but addressing rust and worn suspension components is crucial for preserving the car's structural integrity and handling.
How long will the 2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata last?
The primary long-term durability concerns revolve around rust prevention and suspension wear. Regular washing (especially in winter), rustproofing treatments, and replacing worn suspension components are critical for extending the car's lifespan. The soft top also requires periodic replacement or repair.
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features are minimal, reflecting the car's age. There's no traction control or stability control. Safety features include dual front airbags and anti-lock brakes (ABS) were optional.
Optional features included air conditioning, power windows and locks (standard on LS), cruise control (LS), and a limited-slip differential (Torsen LSD).
Crash-test ratings for the 2002 MX-5 Miata are somewhat dated by modern standards. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave it 4 stars for the driver and passenger in frontal impacts. Side-impact crash testing was not conducted by the NHTSA. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) also didn't conduct tests on this model year. Keep in mind safety standards have advanced significantly since 2002.

2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata Prices and Market Value
The Miata has depreciated significantly but has stabilized, with well-maintained examples holding their value relatively well. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition (rust-free examples command a premium), low mileage, desirable options (like the Torsen LSD), and a clean title. Limited-edition models or those with rare color combinations may also fetch higher prices. Low supply and high demand keep these cars desirable.

How Does the 2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata Compare to Other Sedan?
Compared to these rivals, the Miata offers a better balance of fun, reliability, and cost-effectiveness. It lacks the raw power of the S2000 or the luxury of the Z3, but provides an engaging and accessible driving experience. If you prioritize ultimate performance and budget isn't a major concern, the S2000 or Boxster might be considered. If comfort and luxury are paramount, the Z3 could be an option. However, for overall value, fun-to-drive factor, and reliability, the Miata remains a top choice. The Toyota MR2 Spyder offers similar performance and mid-engine handling, but has a less refined interior.

Final Verdict: Is the 2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata a Good Sedan?
It's worth buying used, provided it has been well-maintained and is free from significant rust. The LS trim offers more desirable features, but even the base model provides a satisfying driving experience. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended, paying particular attention to rust, suspension components, and soft top condition.

Cape Cod MiataI have owned 4 Miata's over the years. My current one is a British Green 2002 LS. I purchased it 3 years ago ad it had 38,000 miles on it and I am the 2nd owner. It has the automatic transmission and factory installed mudguards and rear spoiler. I have only driven it 2,500 miles since purchased but like the other 3 I have owned it is extremely reliable, handles smartly and gas mileage is decent averaging 25mpg. It has always been garaged and has no rust. I plan on keeping it for a long time.

Itβs still a head turner!I bought my Miata about 7 years ago. Itβs a base model- British racing green. I get more compliments and offers to purchase the car - itβs unbelievable! While my automatic is not great on gas with 110k miles, Iβve only had to replace the brakes. I really enjoy how tight it handles... what a great car!

This is my third one!Purchased it used with 38,00 miles on it. I am the 3rd owner and it is the 3rd Miata I have owned. The others were a 1990 and a 1992. It is the LS model with factory installed mudflaps and spoiler and has the automatic 4 speed transmission. We love the ride and handling and style. We use it on weekends and go for long rides. Lot's of fun.

Newest editionOne of the purest driving experiences. With the increasing push of automotive enthusiasts who want cheap fun cars they are increasing in value and have gone up roughly 60% in the past two years. The things to watch out for is frame rail rust which will result in exponential repair costs.

Most reliable car I have ownedGreat car for money. Fun to drive. Just wish I didn't need high test gas. But it runs better and gets better gas mileage. Love the crystal blue color with tan interior.
