The Mazda MX-5 Miata, a lightweight two-seat roadster, has been captivating drivers since its introduction in 1989, reviving the classic British roadster formula. The 2023 model continues this legacy, available as a soft-top convertible. Key trims include the Sport, Club, and Grand Touring. The pricing range typically spans from the low $30,000s to the upper $30,000s. Its popularity stems from its engaging driving dynamics, affordability, and timeless design, offering a pure and exhilarating driving experience.
The Good

The 2023 MX-5 Miata excels in performance with its nimble handling and responsive engine, appealing to driving enthusiasts. Its sleek design and open-air experience offer emotional satisfaction. Practically, it boasts good fuel efficiency, proven reliability, and represents strong value for its price. While not focused on outright comfort, its simplicity is part of the charm.

The Bad

The MX-5 Miata's weaknesses include limited cargo space and a cramped interior, making it unsuitable for those needing practicality. The ride can be firm, and road noise is noticeable. Potential buyers should be mindful of the small cabin and minimal storage before purchasing. The soft top, while convenient, can be a security concern in certain areas.

What Problems Does the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata Have?

The 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata is generally considered a reliable vehicle. However, some frequently reported problems, although not widespread, include issues with the infotainment system (freezing or glitches) and occasional electrical gremlins. Specifically, some owners have noted the infotainment screen can be slow to respond.
Recalls for the MX-5 Miata are relatively infrequent, but it's always advisable to check the NHTSA website for the latest recall information to ensure any potential safety issues are addressed.
Long-term reliability is generally strong, with the engine and transmission proving durable over time. However, some owners have reported issues with the soft top mechanism after several years, particularly with the latches and seals. It's essential to properly maintain the soft top to prevent leaks and premature wear. Previous model years (particularly earlier NC models) had some reports of rust in certain climates, so inspecting older used models for rust is crucial. The ND generation (2016 and newer), including the 2023 model, has shown improved rust resistance.

How long will the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata last?

With proper maintenance, the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata can easily achieve 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report enjoying their Miatas for 10-15 years. Regular oil changes, timely replacement of wear items (brakes, tires), and adherence to the maintenance schedule are crucial for longevity.
Long-term durability is generally good, but as mentioned earlier, the soft top requires specific care. The suspension components may also need attention over time, especially if the car is driven aggressively. Overall, the MX-5 Miata is known for its robust engine and transmission, contributing to its lasting appeal.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata features a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. The Club trim adds a Bose audio system for enhanced sound quality.
Driver-assistance features include blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert on Club and Grand Touring trims. Automatic emergency braking is not standard but is available as an option.
Safety features include standard front and side airbags, stability control, and traction control.
Optional features include navigation, adaptive headlights, and rain-sensing wipers.
Crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA vary. While the MX-5 Miata performs well in some categories, its small size can impact overall crashworthiness. It's important to review the latest safety ratings from both organizations before purchasing. The soft-top version inherently offers less rollover protection than a hardtop vehicle. Overall, the MX-5 Miata balances essential tech and safety features with its focus on driving pleasure. The emphasis is more on the driving experience than on packing in every available technological gadget.

2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata Prices and Market Value

The 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata had a starting MSRP in the low $30,000s, with higher trims reaching the upper $30,000s. Used market prices for well-maintained 2023 models typically range from the mid-$20,000s to the low $30,000s, depending on trim, mileage, and condition.
The MX-5 Miata generally holds its value well due to its popularity and reputation for reliability. Limited production models, such as the 30th Anniversary Edition, can command higher resale prices. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, accident history, and service records. Miatas in desirable colors and with manual transmissions tend to depreciate less.

2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata Cost of Ownership

The Mazda MX-5 Miata is relatively economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate, reflecting its safety record and low theft rate. Fuel costs are low due to its excellent fuel economy. Maintenance costs are also reasonable, with readily available parts and straightforward mechanical design.

2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata Insurance

Insurance for a 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Passenger Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata Compare to Other Passenger Sedan?

The 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata's key rivals include the Subaru BRZ/Toyota GR86 and, to some extent, used sports cars like the Porsche Boxster. The BRZ/GR86 offer slightly more practicality with a small rear seat and more cargo space, along with similar levels of driving enjoyment. They also have a bit more power. However, the Miata is a convertible, offering an open-air experience the BRZ/GR86 lacks. In terms of reliability, the Miata has a strong reputation. The BRZ/GR86 have had some engine-related concerns in earlier years, although newer models have addressed those issues.
The Porsche Boxster offers a more premium experience with superior performance and features, but comes at a significantly higher price point.
In terms of price, the Miata is generally more affordable than a comparable Boxster and competitive with the BRZ/GR86. A similar alternative for those seeking a more raw and vintage experience could be an older Honda S2000, though these are typically higher priced due to their collectability and are aging cars. The Miata excels at providing a pure, lightweight sports car experience at an accessible price point, making it a compelling choice for driving enthusiasts.

Final Verdict: Is the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata a Good Passenger Sedan?

The 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata is ideal for driving enthusiasts seeking a fun, engaging, and affordable roadster. It's perfect for individuals or couples who prioritize driving pleasure over practicality. It is worth buying, especially for those who appreciate its lightweight handling and convertible experience.
A new Miata offers the latest features and warranty coverage, while a used model can provide excellent value. The Club trim strikes a good balance between features and performance, with the available Brembo/BBS/Recaro package further enhancing the driving experience. Consider the Grand Touring for added comfort and convenience. Whether new or used, a well-maintained MX-5 Miata is a rewarding and enjoyable sports car.

December 2024 bought a 2023 Mazda Miata Grand Touring

December 2024 bought a 2023 Mazda Miata Grand Touring with 34,500 miles. Drove the car from South Florida to the SC coast, 10 hours. Fantastic fun drive! 6 speed manual with a soft top only weighs 2350 pounds, spirited ride, excellent power and fuel economy, 35 mpg. Good tech with blind spot monitors, cruise, power windows and locks. Push button start, heated seats and navigation just enough tech. Puts a smile on your face just looking at it, lots of compliments and you are just happy driving this magnificent, magical machine!! Just love it! 🥰
