The Mazda MX-5 Miata, a quintessential roadster, boasts a rich history dating back to 1989, reviving the classic lightweight sports car. The 2021 model continues this tradition with its two-door convertible body style. Key trims include Sport, Club, and Grand Touring. Pricing typically ranges from $27,000 to $35,000. Its popularity stems from its engaging driving dynamics, affordability, and timeless design, offering pure, unadulterated driving fun.
The Good

The 2021 MX-5 Miata delivers an exhilarating driving experience with its responsive handling and rev-happy engine. It's known for its above-average reliability. The stylish design and open-top experience appeal to emotions, while its reasonable fuel efficiency and relatively low cost of ownership offer practical benefits.

The Bad

The MX-5 Miata's primary weakness is its limited cargo and cabin space. Taller drivers might find the interior cramped. While reliable, some owners report minor electrical issues. The ride can be firm, and road noise is noticeable, especially with the top down. Rust can be a concern in areas with harsh winters, so check for corrosion.

What Problems Does the 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata Have?

The 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata is generally considered reliable, but some common issues have been reported. One frequent concern is related to the infotainment system, specifically glitches or slow response times with the touchscreen. Some owners have also reported issues with the convertible top mechanism, especially difficulty in latching or unlatching the top, though this is less common.

Minor electrical problems, such as issues with the interior lighting or sensor malfunctions, have also been noted by some owners. While not widespread, these electrical gremlins can be frustrating. Rust, particularly in areas where road salt is used, remains a long-term concern for all Miatas, so undercarriage inspections are crucial.

There haven't been any significant recalls specific to the 2021 model year affecting a large number of vehicles. However, it's always advisable to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the latest recall information. Earlier model years of the fourth-generation MX-5 (ND) did have some minor recalls related to fuel pump issues and potential brake light malfunctions, so staying informed about potential carry-over issues is important. Overall, the MX-5 Miata has a good reliability record, but potential buyers should be aware of these reported problems.

How long will the 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata last?

With proper maintenance, a 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata can easily reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding these figures with regular servicing. The engine and transmission are generally robust.

Long-term durability hinges on consistent maintenance, including timely oil changes, fluid checks, and attention to rust prevention. Weaknesses over time often relate to wear and tear on suspension components, bushing deterioration, and potential rust development, especially in harsher climates. The soft top will also eventually need replacement with time and sun exposure.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata comes standard with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto integration. Base models feature a basic audio system, while higher trims offer a Bose sound system for enhanced audio quality. Navigation is available on the Grand Touring trim.

In terms of driver-assistance features, the MX-5 Miata offers Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Smart City Brake Support on the Club and Grand Touring trims. Adaptive Front-lighting System is available on the Grand Touring. While not overloaded with tech, the focus is on providing essential safety and convenience features.

Safety features include standard airbags, anti-lock brakes, and stability control. Crash test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) are generally good, though the small size of the car inherently impacts some crash test outcomes. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) also provides safety ratings, which are worth reviewing. Optional features include heated seats (Club and Grand Touring) and automatic climate control (Grand Touring).

The 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata had a starting MSRP of around $27,000 for the base Sport trim and could reach $35,000+ for the Grand Touring with options. Currently, used market prices range from approximately $23,000 to $32,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level.

The MX-5 Miata holds its value relatively well due to its enduring popularity and reputation for reliability. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, trim level (Club and Grand Touring tend to hold value better), and the presence of desirable options like the Brembo brakes package.

2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata Cost of Ownership

The 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically lower than average for sports cars due to its safety features and lower repair costs. 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata Insurance

Insurance for a 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata's key rivals include the Fiat 124 Spider (now discontinued), Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ, and potentially even used BMW Z4 models. In terms of performance, the Miata offers superior handling and a more engaging driving experience than the Fiat 124 Spider. While the Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ offer slightly more horsepower, the Miata's lighter weight makes it feel equally quick.

In terms of features, the MX-5 Miata is relatively basic compared to the 86/BRZ, focusing on the driving experience rather than extensive tech. The BMW Z4, even used, offers more luxury and technology but at a higher price point and with potentially higher maintenance costs.

Reliability-wise, the MX-5 Miata is generally more reliable than the Fiat 124 Spider, which shares some components but has had more reported issues. The Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ are also generally reliable. Price is a significant advantage for the Miata, typically undercutting the BMW Z4 and often being comparable to the 86/BRZ. A similar alternative would be the Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ if you need a small rear seat and prefer a coupe over a convertible. For pure driving enjoyment, the Miata remains a top choice.

Ranks #45 Convertible

Final Verdict: Is the 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata a Good Sedan?

The 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata is ideal for driving enthusiasts seeking an affordable, fun, and engaging roadster experience. It's worth buying if you prioritize driving pleasure over practicality and cargo space. A used model can offer excellent value, especially if well-maintained. The Club trim is often considered the sweet spot, adding desirable features like Bilstein dampers and a limited-slip differential without the higher price of the Grand Touring. Whether new or used, a pre-purchase inspection is recommended to check for any potential issues.

Thoughts on Buying my Second Miata

This is my second Miata. I also own an ‘03 NB and have put a lot into it over the years. I’ve eyeballed ‘16+ Miatas for years and finally found a ‘21 Grand Touring with 2k miles on it and bought it. Aesthetically, it is a beautiful car. Ergonomically, everything is in its proper place and I fit perfectly at 6’. I have the seat pushed all the way back so anyone taller could possibly find themselves uncomfortable. I swapped the original rims and tires out for some Konig rims and Continental all-season tires. The stock rims are 7” wide and the aftermarket are 8” wide: more traction on the road. Off the line, you can chirp the tires so the power is certainly adequate. The manual gear box is tight and shifts cleanly. It is an extremely fun, nimble, and reliable car. The Grand Touring has the leather, backup camera, and Bose stereo. I have driven this car hard through the “twisties” and cruised it 500 miles with no reservations. There isn’t anything really needing done to this car; it is a fantastic ride out of the box. I did, however, give the performance a “4” because I know there is room for growth with aftermarket products. Nevertheless, you won’t be disappointed. Be careful though! My buddy wrecked his ‘19 Miata RF two weeks ago pushing it just a little too hard.

Worth the tradeoffs...

If you’re buying an MX-5 you know what you’re getting into. Is it comfortable? It could be worse, I guess. Is the Mazda infotainment system just about the worst on the market? Absolutely. Is there any interior storage space? Laughable. But will it make you smile every time you get behind the wheel, will you find yourself making excuses to run errands that aren’t necessarily mandatory...yes. Most fun per buck on the planet.

Beautiful Car

I finally got the point in my life where I could buy a fun car. I've had 2 Mazda's previously, so choosing a Miata was obvious for me. This car is absolutely gorgeous and fun to drive. I only wish it had a tiny bit more room inside. It's definitely not made for long trips. Not a big deal, but the seats feel cheap for the price of the car. Otherwise, I'm very happy with this car.
