What Problems Does the 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata Have?

The 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata is generally considered reliable, but some common issues have been reported. Some owners have noted issues with the infotainment system, such as freezing or glitches. Premature wear of the soft top, particularly along the seams, is a concern, so regular inspection and maintenance are crucial. Some have mentioned minor oil consumption, but it's not widespread. Check for any recalls related to the brake system, fuel pump, or electrical components. It's crucial to verify recall status with the NHTSA using the VIN.

Long-term reliability concerns are relatively minimal. However, rust can be an issue in areas with heavy salt usage during winter. The clutch can wear out relatively quickly if driven aggressively. The earlier NC generation (2006-2015) had some reported issues with engine valve problems, but these are less prevalent in the ND generation (2016+). Overall, the 2020 model is a solid choice, but a thorough pre-purchase inspection is always recommended.

How long will the 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata last?

With proper maintenance, a 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata can easily reach 150,000-200,000 miles or more. Many owners report 10+ years of reliable service. Regular oil changes (every 7,500 miles), timely fluid replacements, and proper tire care are essential. Long-term durability is generally good, but the soft top may require replacement after 7-10 years, depending on climate and usage. Suspension components, like shocks and bushings, may need attention after 100,000 miles. Rust prevention is vital, especially in colder climates. Overall, with diligent care, the MX-5 can provide many years of enjoyable driving.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata offers a reasonable suite of tech features. The base Sport trim includes a 7-inch touchscreen with Mazda Connect, a rearview camera, and Bluetooth connectivity. Upgrading to the Club trim adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a Bose nine-speaker audio system, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

The Grand Touring trim enhances the tech with automatic climate control, heated leather seats, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights, and a navigation system. Optional features included adaptive front-lighting system and auto-dimming rearview mirror. Driver-assistance features are limited, primarily consisting of blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert on higher trims. Standard safety features include stability control, traction control, and antilock brakes.

As for crash-test ratings, the 2020 MX-5 Miata received good scores from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) in several categories. However, it wasn't named a Top Safety Pick. NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) ratings vary, so it is always best to consult their website for specific details.

As of late 2024, used market prices typically range from $20,000 to $30,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The MX-5 Miata holds its value relatively well due to its popularity and reputation for reliability. Lower mileage examples, well-maintained vehicles, and those with desirable options (like the Club trim with the Brembo/BBS package) command higher resale values. Color can also play a role, with more popular colors retaining value better. Overall, depreciation is moderate for this vehicle.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata Compare to Other Convertible?

The 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata competes with sports cars like the Fiat 124 Spider (which shares its platform), the Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ, and even some higher-end convertibles. Compared to the Fiat 124 Spider, the Miata offers a more refined driving experience and generally better reliability. The Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ provide a more practical coupe body style with a rear seat, but lack the convertible experience. The Miata excels in handling and fun-to-drive factor, often exceeding the others.

In terms of features, the Miata is generally well-equipped, especially in higher trims. Reliability is a strong point for the Miata. Price-wise, the Miata is very competitive, offering excellent value. Alternatives to consider depend on priorities. For a similar roadster experience with Italian flair, the Fiat 124 Spider could be considered, though with some reliability caveats. For a more practical sports car with a rear seat, the Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ are good choices. Ultimately, the MX-5 Miata provides an unparalleled open-top driving experience at an attractive price.

Final Verdict: Is the 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata a Good Convertible?

The 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata is ideal for driving enthusiasts seeking an affordable and engaging roadster experience. It's worth buying, especially if you prioritize handling, fuel efficiency, and open-top driving pleasure. It's less suitable for those needing significant cargo or passenger space. A used 2020 model offers excellent value, potentially saving you money compared to a new one, while still providing modern features and the improved 181-hp engine. The Club trim is often considered the sweet spot, offering desirable features like Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and Bilstein dampers without the higher price of the Grand Touring. Ensure a thorough inspection before purchasing any used vehicle.

State of the art fun car

I purchased this car to have a small convertible for pleasure use and it's perfect for my needs. The Soul Red color is beautiful. I am a big guy but after a little maneuvering of my body to enter it, I feel very comfortable in it. It's a 6 speed manual with a short but smooth shift knob. Lots of extras and features and still have to learn to navigate some of them. It has enough power for my needs and great gas mileage. Only wish it had automatic climate control and a little less road noise on the highway. The lane departure alert is very sensitive and irritating but is a good trade off for safety. It needs a cabin trunk release knob and if it has one, I can't find it. I would prefer leather seats and Bose radio system but my cloth seats are comfortable with excellent quality fabric and the 6 speaker radio is acceptable to someone who's not an audiophile. Lastly, would love automatic headlight dimmers so I don't blind oncoming drivers at night! Overall, I now know why it is so highly rated and I love it already.

Track Ready!Rural NS Top Down Fun -THE BEST EVER

When I am 64! I loved it as soon as I drove it. Still do. Not practical or extremely comfortable but that isn't the point of a MX5. A 6 speed manual transmission with the BBS/Brembo/Recaro GS-P. Just so you can feel every wheel on the road. Exactly the way it should be in a Fun Race Car :). Car is rated for 40 mpg ++. Who cares! ( I have a Prius for daily driver) The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts. With forged pistons, rods, crankshaft sports tuning I am having those thoughts. Its time for another South Shore rural road "Flight". 🙂 Signed Retired Fly Boy!

Tons of fun to drive

Haven't had the car long but I loved it as soon as we pulled off the lot for the test drive... The car definitely isn't practical or particularly comfortable but that isn't the point of a miata... I got a manual transmission club with the BBS/Brembo/Recaro package so you can feel everything on the road, which is the way it should be in a car like this... For having electric power steering the feedback from the steering wheel is great, it is tuned so well that it feels like a hydraulic system... The shifter is still as crisp and mechanical feeling as it was in the older Miatas (if it's not broke, don't fix it) and is extremely satisfying to run it thru the gears... There is enough torque to cruise in 6th gear at 35 mph, and at anything above maybe 1700 rpm you have enough power to pass without downshifting (if you're not trying to pass too quickly) and it makes good noises and pulls pretty good at higher RPM... Car is rated for 35 mpg highway but I have babied it and got pretty close to 40 while having to stop at a few lights and driving with the top down... If I were only on the highway and tried I could easily get better than 40 with the top up... Would not recommend one as your only car unless you never take road trips and never buy more than a couple bags of groceries at a time (my other car is a Crown Vic so I'm covered for comfort and grocery getting), but if you are looking for a second car or can live with the downsides of a tiny convertible as your only vehicle then I can't recommend the ND enough... I'm smiling like an idiot every time I get in it... Can't speak to reliability yet as mine has less than 1000 miles on it, but I have heard it has forged pistons, rods and crankshaft I would imagine at least the bottom end of the engine will be bulletproof...

Wife tired of hearing "I love this car."

Handling is awesome, acceleration is spirited, looks great, super reliable, interior looks good. Seats are so-so, need to angle seat up some and higher bolsters would be nice. Lots of up-gradable stuff out there, easy to work on, top goes up/down in less than 2 seconds. thimble sized trunk holds a surprising amount of stuff. People look at you funny when you keep pulling stuff out. EVERY time I drive it, I tell my wife how much I love this car. Its just plain old fun. Ihave the CLUB manual shift version BTW. Highly recommend, but if I had to do it over again I would get the club with the brembo brakes and recarro seats, but would stay with the manual transmission for sure!
