2007 Ford Ranger Review: 2007's Best Small Work Truck for the Price

Rating: 4.00
Based on 12 Owner Reviews
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2007 Ford Ranger is a compact pickup truck, part of the Ranger's third generation (1998-2012). It's known for its affordability, practicality, and reliability. Available in regular cab, SuperCab (extended cab), and in trims like XL, XLT, and Sport. New, its price ranged roughly from $13,000 to $20,000. The Ranger's compact size made it popular for navigating city streets and its truck bed proved versatile for various tasks. It stands out as a dependable and simple truck.
The Good

The 2007 Ford Ranger offers solid reliability and decent performance for a compact truck. Practically, it boasts a useful truck bed and affordable ownership. Emotionally, its simple design and dependability provide a sense of ruggedness and capability. Its smaller size allows for better maneuverability than full-size trucks, appealing to city dwellers.

The Bad

The 2007 Ford Ranger's weaknesses include a relatively dated interior, below-average fuel economy for its class with certain engine options, and limited rear seat space in SuperCab models. Rust can be a concern, especially in areas with road salt. The 4.0L V6 can experience timing chain issues. Check for transmission slippage during test drives.

What Problems Does the 2007 Ford Ranger Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2007 Ford Ranger include issues with the automatic transmission, particularly slippage or rough shifting. The 4.0L V6 engine is known to potentially suffer from timing chain problems, leading to costly repairs. Rust can be a significant concern, especially in regions where road salt is used extensively; this can affect the frame and body panels. Some owners have reported issues with the fuel pump and fuel gauge accuracy.
Recalls for the 2007 Ford Ranger have addressed issues such as cruise control system malfunctions potentially leading to unintended acceleration, and concerns regarding the fuel tank straps corroding and potentially causing the fuel tank to detach. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) to confirm if all applicable recalls have been addressed.
Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the wear and tear of components like suspension parts, ball joints, and bushings. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes and inspections, is crucial to mitigating these issues and extending the lifespan of the vehicle. The 2007 model year, in general, shares many of the common issues found in other years of the third-generation Ranger.

How long will the 2007 Ford Ranger last?

A well-maintained 2007 Ford Ranger can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. With consistent maintenance, including timely oil changes, fluid flushes, and attention to worn components, owners often report 15-20 years of service.
Long-term durability hinges on rust prevention, particularly in colder climates. Weaknesses include potential timing chain issues in the 4.0L V6 and transmission problems if not properly maintained. Suspension components and ball joints may require replacement over time. Regular inspections can help address these issues before they become major problems.
Positive Owner Reviews
Tom S.
My 2007 Ranger has been incredibly reliable for hauling and light work. The gas mileage isn't great, and it's pretty basic inside, but it gets the job done.
Sarah M.
Bought this for my son as his first truck. It's simple to maintain, affordable, and safe. Not the most luxurious ride, but perfect for a young driver.
Lisa K.
I use my Ranger for hauling gardening supplies and occasional trips to the hardware store. It's perfect for that kind of light duty. Wouldn't recommend it for heavy towing.
Negative Owner Reviews
John B.
It's a 2007, so it's starting to show its age. I've had to do some repairs, but overall it's still a useful truck. The size is perfect for city driving.
David R.
It's a good work truck, but not the most comfortable for long drives. The seats are pretty basic and the ride can be a bit bumpy.
Chris P.
Check for rust before you buy one of these. It's a common problem, especially in areas with harsh winters.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2007 Ford Ranger offered relatively basic tech and entertainment features compared to modern vehicles. Standard features on lower trims typically included an AM/FM radio. Higher trims like the XLT and Sport added features like a CD player and upgraded speakers. There were no advanced infotainment systems, navigation, or smartphone integration available.
Driver-assistance features were minimal, limited to basic features like power steering and anti-lock brakes (ABS) on some models. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning available.
Safety features included standard front airbags. Side airbags were optional. Crash test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) for the 2007 Ranger were generally marginal to acceptable. NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) ratings varied depending on the specific test, but overall, the Ranger's crash test performance was not exceptional compared to newer vehicles.
Optional features could include air conditioning, power windows and locks, keyless entry, and upgraded audio systems. The FX4 Off-Road trim added features like skid plates and off-road suspension for improved off-road capability, but did not significantly enhance safety or technology. The Ranger's focus was on functionality and affordability rather than cutting-edge technology.

2007 Ford Ranger Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2007 Ford Ranger ranged from approximately $13,000 to $20,000 depending on the trim level, cab configuration, and options. Current used market prices vary significantly based on condition, mileage, and location. Expect to find them ranging from roughly $3,000 to $10,000.
The Ranger has depreciated considerably over time, as expected for a vehicle of its age. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, rust presence, mileage, engine type (the 4.0L V6 typically commands a higher price), and whether it's a 4x4 model. Well-maintained Rangers, particularly those with the 4.0L engine and 4WD, tend to hold their value better.

2007 Ford Ranger Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2007 Ford Ranger are generally affordable. Fuel costs depend on the engine, with the 2.3L I4 being the most economical. Maintenance is typically straightforward, with readily available and relatively inexpensive parts. However, potential repairs, particularly related to the 4.0L V6 timing chain or transmission, can be costly. Long-term ownership can be economical if the vehicle is well-maintained and free from major rust issues. Neglecting maintenance or encountering significant repairs can make it more costly.

2007 Ford Ranger Insurance

Insurance for a 2007 Ford Ranger is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Pickup Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2007 Ford Ranger Compare to Other Pickup Truck?

The 2007 Ford Ranger competed with compact trucks like the Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, and Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon. In terms of performance, the Tacoma generally offered more powerful engine options and better off-road capability, especially in TRD trims. The Frontier provided a similar blend of practicality and performance. The Colorado/Canyon were arguably slightly more refined internally, but suffered from some reliability woes.
Feature-wise, the Ranger lagged behind some competitors, particularly in available technology. Reliability was generally good, but the Tacoma often held an edge in long-term dependability. In terms of price, the Ranger was typically one of the more affordable options, which was a key selling point.
Alternatives to the 2007 Ford Ranger include:
  • Toyota Tacoma: Offers superior reliability and performance but typically at a higher price.
  • Nissan Frontier: A decent all-around truck with similar capabilities and often a comparable price.
  • Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon: Worth considering, but research reliability thoroughly.

If reliability and resale value are paramount, the Toyota Tacoma is often a better choice. If budget is the primary concern and basic truck functionality is all that's needed, the Ranger remains a viable option. The Frontier provides a solid middle ground.

Final Verdict: Is the 2007 Ford Ranger a Good Pickup Truck?

The 2007 Ford Ranger is ideal for buyers seeking an affordable, simple, and dependable compact pickup truck for basic tasks. It's well-suited for those who need a truck bed for hauling but don't require the size or power of a full-size truck.
Whether it's worth buying depends on the condition and price. A well-maintained Ranger with the 2.3L or 4.0L engine can be a good value, especially if rust is minimal. Avoid models with known transmission issues or excessive rust. Opt for a higher trim like the XLT or Sport for added features. It’s best to buy used as new is not an option, and a thorough pre-purchase inspection is essential.

Reliable but Basic

My 2007 Ranger has been incredibly reliable for hauling and light work. The gas mileage isn't great, and it's pretty basic inside, but it gets the job done.

Perfect First Truck

Bought this for my son as his first truck. It's simple to maintain, affordable, and safe. Not the most luxurious ride, but perfect for a young driver.

Showing Its Age

It's a 2007, so it's starting to show its age. I've had to do some repairs, but overall it's still a useful truck. The size is perfect for city driving.

Great for Light Hauling

I use my Ranger for hauling gardening supplies and occasional trips to the hardware store. It's perfect for that kind of light duty. Wouldn't recommend it for heavy towing.

Good Value for the Price

You can't beat the value of a used Ranger. It's a solid little truck that's easy to work on. Just don't expect any bells and whistles.

Small but Mighty

This truck is surprisingly capable for its size. I've taken it off-road a few times and it handled it well. Fuel economy could be better.

Not Comfortable on Long Trips

It's a good work truck, but not the most comfortable for long drives. The seats are pretty basic and the ride can be a bit bumpy.

Easy to Park

I love how easy it is to park this truck in the city. It's much more manageable than a full-size pickup.

Rust is a Concern

Check for rust before you buy one of these. It's a common problem, especially in areas with harsh winters.
